• Alfred Lord Tennyson was the most popular poet of the Victorian era. He was born in Somcrsby, Lincolnshire in England,
the fourth of twelve children to George and :Elizabeth Tennyson. Alfred attended Trinity College, Cambridge, where he
won the Chancellor's Gold Medal in 1828 for his poem ''Timbuctoo." In 1845 he ~ived a govcmm.cnt pension of £200
a year, which helped ,P_IOVidc Tennyson with nccdcd financial support. Despite the fact that he was legally blind and could
not even sec to eat without a monocle, he achieved great succcas as a poet. Tennyson was named Poet Laureate of
England in 1850 and was later awarded his title "Lord" by Queen Victoria in 1884.
