UL CoMP 2 Overview

2 Overview
UL CoMP uses UL macro diversity to combine received signals. In the coverage area of an eNodeB, UL
CoMP uses the antennas of two cells to receive UE signals from the physical uplink shared channel
(PUSCH) and combines these received signals. In this way, UL CoMP provides signal combining gains
and interference mitigation gains.
UL CoMP depends on UL interference rejection combining (IRC) and can be used only after
LOFD-001012 UL Interference Rejection Combining is enabled.

2.1 Concepts
 CoMP UE: a UE to which CoMP is applied
 Coordinating cell: a cell that works with the serving cell of a CoMP UE to implement CoMP
Currently, UL CoMP can be implemented only within an eNodeB. UL CoMP selects CoMP UEs and uses
the antennas of two cells within an eNodeB to receive each CoMP UE's signals from the PUSCH.

Unless otherwise stated, UL CoMP mentioned in this document refers to intra-eNodeB UL CoMP.

2.2 Application Scenarios

UL CoMP is used in the following two scenarios:

Scenario 1
Scenario 1: A UE's signals are expected to obtain signal combining gains from UL CoMP. For simplicity,
such a UE is called a type-1 CoMP UE.
A type-1 CoMP UE (UE1 in Figure 2-1) lies on the edge between intra-eNodeB cells. The signals of this
UE are very likely to obtain obvious signal combining gains from UL CoMP.
Figure 2-1 Type-1 CoMP UE (UE1)

Scenario 2
Scenario 2: A UE's signals are expected to obtain intra-eNodeB interference mitigation gains from UL
CoMP. For simplicity, such a UE is called a type-2 CoMP UE.

UL CoMP 2 Overview

Figure 2-2 Type-2 CoMP UE (UE0)

2.3 Benefits
UL CoMP uses the antennas of two cells to receive a suitable UE's signals. If each cell has two receive
(RX) antennas, UL CoMP can use four RX antennas to provide gains, compared with two RX antennas
in non-CoMP scenarios.

Performance Gains
Multiple-antenna reception provides signal combining gains (including diversity gains and array gains)
and interference mitigation gains. Generally, the achieved gain increases with the number of RX
antennas
UL CoMP provides different performance gains for different types of CoMP UEs:
 UL CoMP provides signaling combining gains and interference mitigation gains for type-1 CoMP UEs.
 UL CoMP provides interference mitigation gains for type-2 CoMP UEs.
UL CoMP uses IRC to provide interference mitigation gains. UL CoMP can mitigate interference from
detected sources to UEs on the edge between intra-eNodeB cells (for example, in scenario 1). UL CoMP
can also mitigate interference from undetected sources to UEs on the edge between inter-eNodeB cells
(for example, in scenarios 1 and 2).

Capacity Gains
UL CoMP increases the UL throughput of cell edge users (CEUs) because type-1 CoMP UEs are located
on the edge between intra-eNodeB cells. UL CoMP also increases the average UL throughput of a cell
because type-2 CoMP UEs can be located in the cell center or on the edge between inter-eNodeB cells.

UL CoMP 3 Key Technologies

3 Key Technologies
The key technologies of UL CoMP are as follows:
 Selection of CoMP UEs and coordinating cells
 Joint reception by antennas of multiple cells

3.1 Basic UL CoMP Process

The basic UL CoMP process consists of three procedures, as shown in Figure 3-1.
Figure 3-1 Basic UL CoMP process

The basic process is described as follows:

Step 1 Enable UL CoMP.
Turn on the UL CoMP switch, and configure cell-level information such as information about candidate
coordinating cells.
Step 2 The eNodeB selects CoMP UEs and coordinating cells.
The eNodeB selects CoMP UEs and coordinating cells based on the event A3 measurement reports
from UEs and the resource blocks (RBs) allocated to the CoMP UEs. Then, the eNodeB notifies its
physical layer of the selected UEs and cells.
Step 3 The eNodeB uses antennas of multiple cells for joint reception.
The physical layer uses the antennas of each CoMP UE's serving cell and coordinating cell to receive
this UE's signals and then combines these signals using maximum ratio combining (MRC) or IRC. IRC
is used if the license for LOFD-001012 UL Interference Rejection Combining is purchased and
activated.

UL CoMP 3 Key Technologies

UL CoMP enabling involves only basic configurations, whereas the other two procedures involve key
techniques that will be discussed in sections "3.2 Selecting CoMP UEs and Coordinating Cells" and
"3.3 Using Antennas of Multiple Cells for Joint Reception."

3.2 Selecting CoMP UEs and Coordinating Cells

Figure 3-2 illustrates the differences in reference signal received power (RSRP) between the cells of an
eNodeB to help understand the selection of CoMP UEs.
Figure 3-2 RSRP differences between cells

In the figure, the coordinates (0, 0) represent the eNodeB location, the horizontal and vertical axes
represent the distances of UEs from the eNodeB (unit: m), and the colors indicate RSRP differences
(unit: dB). The RSRP difference at any point is calculated as follows:
RSRP difference (dB) = RSRP received in the serving cell (dBm) – RSRP received from the
intra-eNodeB neighboring cell (dBm)
The color ribbon to the right of the figure shows the mapping between RSRP differences and colors. For
example, the deep blue at the bottom represents an RSRP difference of 0 dB.
UEs in the blue area can be selected as type-1 CoMP UEs. UEs in the red and yellow areas can be
selected as type-2 CoMP UEs if the UEs experience interference from type-1 CoMP UEs in the blue
area.

Selecting a Type-1 CoMP UE and a Coordinating Cell

If UL CoMP is enabled, UEs may send event A3 measurement reports. If the report from a UE indicates
that any intra-LBBP intra-frequency neighboring cells (intra-LBBP cells for short) meet the triggering
condition for UL CoMP event A3, the eNodeB selects this UE as a type-1 CoMP UE. The eNodeB also
selects a cell as a coordinating cell if the RSRP received from this cell is the highest among the
intra-LBBP cells indicated in the report. An LBBP is an LTE baseband processing unit.

All parameters for UL CoMP event A3 except the A3 offset are the same as those for inter-cell interference coordination
(ICIC). For details about parameter settings for ICIC, see ICIC Feature Parameter Description.

eRAN
UL CoMP 3 Key Technologies

UL CoMP produces a significant gain right after a coverage-based handover of a UE to an intra-LBBP

cell. In this case, the eNodeB selects this UE as a type-1 CoMP UE and the source cell as a coordinating
cell.

Selecting a Type-2 CoMP UE and a Coordinating Cell

After type-1 CoMP UEs are determined, intra-LBBP cells exchange information about RBs occupied by
these UEs. If a UE in the current cell shares some RBs with a type-1 CoMP UE in an intra-LBBP cell, the
eNodeB selects the UE in the current cell as a type-2 CoMP UE and the intra-LBBP cell as a
coordinating cell.

If a type-1 CoMP UE meets the condition for type-2 CoMP UE selection, the eNodeB still categorizes the UE as a type-1
CoMP UE.

3.3 Using Antennas of Multiple Cells for Joint Reception

After the physical layer receives the information about CoMP UEs and their coordinating cells, it uses the
antennas of the serving cell and coordinating cell to implement joint reception.
The recommended algorithm is joint interference rejection combining (JIRC). This algorithm treats the
antennas of the coordinating cell as the antennas of the serving cell. The principles of JIRC are the same
as those of IRC. JIRC can be used only after LOFD-001012 UL Interference Rejection Combining is
purchased and enabled.
If IRC is not available, UL CoMP can use only MRC. In this case, UL CoMP cannot provide interference
mitigation gains. Strong interference from/in the coordinating cell cannot be mitigated, and therefore the
signal combining gain produced for type-1 CoMP UE signals may also drop.
Compared with common multiple-antenna reception, joint reception by antennas of multiple cells has the
following characteristics:
 Reuses antennas and radio frequency (RF) channels.
 Provides a high gain when the signals of a CoMP UE and its interfering UEs can be received by the
antennas of the serving cell and coordinating cell and when their power difference is small.

UL CoMP 4 Related Features

4 Related Features
Prerequisite Features
UL CoMP provides interference mitigation gains only when it uses IRC. This type of gain is a major
benefit of UL CoMP, and therefore, UL CoMP is greatly dependent on IRC.
It is recommended that LOFD-001012 UL Interference Rejection Combining be purchased and enabled
together with LOFD-001066 Intra-eNodeB UL CoMP.

Mutually Exclusive Features

Ultra-High Speed Mobility
If LOFD-001008 Ultra High Speed Mobility is enabled for a cell, the eNodeB disables UL CoMP
regardless of whether the CellAlgoSwitch.UlCompSwitch parameter is set to ENABLE(Enable).
UL Frequency Hopping
If UL frequency hopping is enabled for a cell by setting the CellUlschAlgo.UlHoppingType parameter
to a value not equal to Hopping_OFF, the eNodeB automatically disables UL CoMP regardless of
whether the UL CoMP switch (CellAlgoSwitch.UlCompSwitch) is turned on.
Remote Radio Unit
If an RRU is used for a cell, UL CoMP can be disabled only by setting the
CellAlgoSwitch.UlCompSwitch parameter to DISABLE(Disable).

Impacted Features
PUSCH Transmission
UL CoMP uses antennas of multiple cells to receive signals from the PUSCH. Therefore, UL CoMP can
benefit PUSCH transmission features (such as TTI bundling, VoIP, and MOCN) without affecting the
operation of these features.
MU-MIMO
UL CoMP impacts the optional features LOFD-001002 UL 2x2 MU-MIMO and LOFD-001058 UL 2x4
MU-MIMO.
For a UE, UL CoMP and MU-MIMO cannot take effect simultaneously although they can be enabled at
the same time. UL CoMP for type-1 CoMP UEs has the highest priority, MU-MIMO the second, and UL
CoMP for type-2 CoMP UEs the third.
ICIC
 UL ICIC
UL CoMP provides lower interference mitigation gains for CEUs after UL ICIC is enabled because UL
ICIC uses different frequency bands for CEUs.
UL ICIC and UL CoMP together provide higher gains than UL ICIC or UL CoMP.
 DL ICIC
UL CoMP shares all A3 parameters except the A3 offset with DL ICIC. For details about these common
parameters, see ICIC Feature Parameter Description.

6.4.6 Activation Observation

You can use signalingor counters to check whether UL CoMP has been activated.
Using Signaling
This method applies only to type-1 CoMP UEs.
The activation observation procedure is as follows:
[1]. Enable UE1 to access the cell. For details about the access process, see Figure 6-1.
The eNodeB sends the A3 measurement configuration in the RRC_CONN_RECFG message to UE1 for
UL CoMP, as shown in Figure 6-2.The CoMP feature takes effect if A3 offset is configured to -20.

Figure 6-2 A3 offset for UL CoMP

Step 2 Move UE1 to the cell edge. Alternatively, simulate the signal quality on the cell edge by adjusting
an attenuator.
UE1 reports the A3 measurement result shown in Figure 6-3. Based on the report, the eNodeB
determines that UE1 is on the cell edge, and selects UE1 for UL CoMP. The eNodeB then selects a
coordinating cell. The coordinating cell is one that is configured on the same LBBP as the serving cell of
UE1 and has the highest signal quality among the reported intra-LBBP cells. The measurement report
period is 5120 ms, as shown in Figure 6-4.

Step 3 Use UE1 to perform UL File Transfer Protocol (FTP) services, and check the UL throughput of
UE1.
Under the same test conditions, if the UL throughput is higher than when UL CoMP is disabled in the cell,
UL CoMP is working correctly.
----End

Using Counters
The counters to be used are L.ULCoMP.User.Avg, L.ULCoMP.User.Max, and L.ULCoMP.RB.
The activation observation procedure is as follows:
[1]. On the M2000 client, choose Performance > Query Result. The Untitled tab page is displayed, as

UL CoMP 6 Engineering Guidelines

The following describe three groups of counters that can be used for performance monitoring.

L.ChMeas.PUSCH.MCS.0 to L.ChMeas.PUSCH.MCS.28
The long-term (≥ 24 hours) measurement result of L.ChMeas.PUSCH.MCS.0 to
L.ChMeas.PUSCH.MCS.28 shows that the number of used high-order MCSs increases after UL CoMP
is enabled. This measurement result reflects the comprehensive UL CoMP performance, but not the
performance specific to a scenario mentioned in section Selecting a Type-1 CoMP UE and a
Coordinating Cell or Selecting a Type-2 CoMP UE and a Coordinating Cell.

L.ULCoMP.User.Avg and L.ULCoMP.User.Max

The L.ULCoMP.User.Avg and L.ULCoMP.User.Max counters are used to measure the average number
and the maximum number of UEs using UL CoMP. If the average or maximum number is small, UL
CoMP provides low gains.

L.ULCoMP.RB, L.ChMeas.PRB.UL.Used.Avg, and L.ChMeas.PRB.PUCCH.Avg

The following two counters are used to calculate the CoMP RB ratio, that is, the ratio of the number of
CoMP RBs to the total number of RBs:
 L.ULCoMP.RB: indicates the average number of RBs allocated for CoMP UEs.
 L.ChMeas.PRB.UL.Used.Avg: indicates the average number of RBs allocated for all UEs on uplink
channels.
The CoMP RB ratio is calculated as follows:
CoMP RB ratio = L.ULCoMP.RB/L.ChMeas.PRB.UL.Used.Avg
If the CoMP RB ratio is high, UL CoMP provides high UL throughput gains.

The gains that UL CoMP can provide also depend on other factors such as interference, networking mode, and UE
distribution. Therefore, the specific gains cannot be quantified by the preceding counters.

6.6 Parameter Optimization

If UL CoMP is enabled, type-1 CoMP UEs report measurement results every 5 seconds, which increases
the amount of Uu signaling.
To reduce signaling overhead, you can run the following command to change the number of reporting
times to 1 if DL ICIC is disabled:
MOD CELLDLICICMCPARA: LocalCellId=x, ReportAmount=r1;

6.7 Troubleshooting
This section provides steps to troubleshoot a possible fault that might occur after UL CoMP is enabled.

Fault Description
After UL CoMP is enabled, the UL throughput of CEUs in a cell does not increase under the same test
conditions (for example, with the same channel conditions) as before UL CoMP is enabled.

Fault Handling
Step 1 Check related alarms, for example, an alarm that indicates the capacity of a cell decreases. If
there is such an alarm, handle the alarm according to the instructions in eNodeB Alarm
Reference. If there is not such an alarm, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2 Run the DSP LICENSE command to check the Actual Used value of the license Intra-eNodeB
UL CoMP(per Cell)(FDD). If the value is 0, proceed to Step 3; otherwise, skip to Step 5.
Step 3 Check whether the eNodeB meets the UL CoMP requirements for the operating environment. If
yes, proceed to Step 4. If no, modify the eNodeB configurations and go back to Step 1.
Step 4 Check whether the cells are configured with ultra-high speed mobility, UL frequency hopping, or
RRUs. If yes, end the troubleshooting because there is no problem. If no, skip to Step 7.
Step 5 Check whether MU-MIMO is enabled. If yes, end the troubleshooting because there is no
problem. If no, proceed to Step 6.
Step 6 Check whether the intra-LBBP cells selected for UL CoMP have the same frequency, bandwidth,
CP type, and number of antennas. If yes, end the troubleshooting because there is no problem. If
no, proceed to Step 7.
Step 7 Contact Huawei technical support.
