Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Organization and Management Self Learning Module. This Self Learning
Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from Schools
Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division Superintendent,
Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local Government of Pasig through
its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto.

The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential
Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning
activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners acquire the
needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication, Collaboration,
Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into consideration their needs and
circumstances.

LESSON

Management is a universal phenomenon. It is a very popular and widely used


term. All organizations - business, political, cultural or social are involved in
management because it is the management which helps and directs the various efforts
towards a definite purpose.
There are many different ways to define management. The term
“management” has been defined and described in various ways by several authors
on the subject. Below are some of the popular definition of management and it was
given by some prominent authors:

Harold D. Koontz
“Management is an art of getting things done through and with
the people in formally organized groups. It is an art of creating an
environment in which people can perform and individuals and can co-
operate towards attainment of group goals”.

Frederick Winslow Taylor


“Management is an art of knowing what to do, when to do and see
that it is done in the best and cheapest way”. Management is a
purposive activity”
It is the process of working with and through others to effectively
achieve the goals of the organization, by efficiently using limited resources in
the changing world.

According to Henri Fayol


Management is “to manage is to forecast and to plan, to
organize, to command, to co-ordinate and to control."

Instruction:
1. Research and list down at least 5 definition of management and the
prominent personalities who gave them aside from the other prominent
personalities discussed in the lesson.
2. Identify and list down the common key words or phrases you were able to
notice collectively from the definition you gathered.
3. From the results of your research, you should now give your own personal
definition of management using the concept learned in the discussion.

WRAP-UP

Based on the definition given, we will notice the popularity of some common
key terms and phrases used to describe management such as: people, process,
group, goals and objectives, task, individuals. All of these concepts revolve around the
idea that “management is a means(process, task) of extracting work from others
(people, individuals) within an organization (group) in an integrated and coordinated
manner for the purpose of realizing specific objectives (goals, aims, target) through
the productive use of organizational resources. In other words, we can say that
“management consist of getting things done through others”

doing the right things”
