Section A Design Basis

Design basis: Water demand calculation

With reference to our discussions over telephone, please find attached the detailed
plan and costing for equipment for Pretreatment and Biological Treatment system for treating
sewage generated at your proposed Housing complex to permissible limits.
The effluent will be treated biologically in a low powered Sewage treatment system
which will be treated as per state PCB standards and recycled in the premises for washing,
flushing and gardening.
Water demand is calculated based on the guidelines of NBC. Total quantity of water
requirement for the proposed project is estimated to be about 50 KLD during the operation
phase.
By considering 90 % of the water supplied will be converted into sewage i.e.45 KLD.
Wastewater generated from the proposed project will be treated in an STP of 45 KLD.
Detailed design writes up of the STP is in the following section. The sewage generated during
the operation phase will be treated up to the tertiary level in Sewage Treatment Plants (STP)
The entire (100%) treated sewage from STP of 45 KLD capacity will be recycled/ reused for
toilet flushing, car washing and landscaping in the project site excess will be used for avenue
plantation/Sewer.
Design Considerations:
Total water requirement = 50 m3 / day.
Assuming Diversity Factor of 0.90 = 45 KLD

The STP is designed to operate for 20 Hours Per day.

Data &Assumption: -

Design Flow = 45 KLD

Influent BOD = 300mg/L
Total Suspended Solids = 300mg/L
F/M Ratio = 0.18/day
MLSS = 4000mg/L
VSS/TSS = 0.8
Maximum Volume of BOD Loading = 3.2 Kg/m3.d
Minimum Aeration Time = 8 Hr
Minimum Mean Cell Residence Time (MCRT) = 6 days

The sewage is to be treated as per discharge standards.

About MBR Technology:

MBR is one of the predominantly used Filtration Technology in Sewage Treatment Plant.
The Membrane Bioreactor technology is one of the wastewater treatment technologies
which is a combination of Suspended growth biological treatment process along with
membrane filtration. The technology is used in Municipal as well as industrial wastewater
treatment processes.

Working Principle of MBR

Screening (Coarse & Fine), oil & Grease removal are prim most important before the
MBR scheme. The MBR treatment consists of different stages such as the Activated
sludge process, in a Bioreactor where microorganisms grow & multiply in presence of
Dissolved Oxygen (DO), MBR Tank has membrane module cassettes where filtration
occurs.
The overflow from the Bioreactor goes to the MBR tank. Biomass is retained in the MBR
tank & recycles back to the bioreactor continuously to maintain the MLSS-MLVSS
concentration & avoid sludge aging. Water passes through 0.04-micron membrane
pores and gets filtered.
The system operates in two modes Permeate cycle & the Relaxation cycle. MBR
eliminates the Tertiary polishing treatment of sand & carbon filters. Maintenance
cleaning & Recovery Clean are the two membrane cleaning techniques followed.

1. The MBR technology aims to remove organic compounds (COD and BOD),
suspended matter, nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous) and bio-accumulative or bio-
degradable micro pollutants.

2. The biological conversion processes are the same as those described for active
sludge systems for COD removal, nitrifying active sludge and nitrifying/denitrifying active
sludge.

3. The presence of membranes ensures complete retention of the biology and for
complete removal of the suspended matter

4. Because bacteria are kept longer in the reactor, the likelihood is greater that difficult to
degrade or larger components are degraded. Compared to a conventional system, the
removal of suspended matter almost always results in a low COD value in the effluent.
The absolute COD value is determined by the quality of the influent.

 Screening, collection cum equalization and transfer of wastewater to STP.

 Aerobic treatment in Membrane Bioreactor system.
 Secondary clarification of biologically treated wastewater.
 Disinfection of treated water using sodium hypochlorite.
 Reuse of treated water in horticulture, plantation, and floor washing after Tertiary
Treatment.
 Sludge Dewatering, drying and disposal or reuse as wet manure in external area (very low
frequency).

SCOPE OF WORK
The proposed system for treatment of the effluent is based on Natural Biological
augmentation based on a fixed film bioreactor which works on a very low power
requirement. It works on a combination of Biological phenomena which include solids to bio
gasification in a primary settling medium, followed by an aerobic biological oxidation,
clarification and polishing by natural filters of sand and fibers. The treatment will be done at
the rate of 45 Kilo Liters per day.
The system includes Pretreatment of effluent using a primary clarifier, Oil and grease
skimmer, MBR based Biological treatment of the sewage, and reuse for gardening or
washing. Civil works include a collection tank of 50 KL, and 50 KL Final Treated water tank.

Salient Features of MBR STP:

 STP shall be compact, have minimum Moving Parts and be odor free.
 The microbial growth in this stage is mostly suspended growth in MBR tank.
 The blower is a low power consuming, high efficiency equipment, and the aeration grid is
a non-clog type system.
 Collection cum equalization tank in RCC is placed below the ground level.
 All other tanks of STP in MS Prefabricated structure can be built above the ground as
required.
 A metered dosing system is provided to have better control on dosing rate and to avoid
the wastage of chemical.
 All electro-mechanical equipment’s are proposed with standby units. Pumps, blowers
shall be operational in auto mode through level controllers, timers etc. for easier
operation.

Section C
Treatment Process:
(a) Screen Chamber: The sewage from the unit shall pass through the manually cleaned
SS – 304 Screen (02 no) with different pore sizes to remove suspended materials from
the sewage.
(b) Oil & Grease Trap: Here oil and grease present in the sewage will be trapped and
taken out manually. It will be done in a baffled tank put below the inward water level.
(c) Equalization Tank: The screened sewage shall be collected by gravity into the
equalization tank. A customized consortia of anaerobic microbes which convert the

oil, grease, fats, organic matter, fecal solids into methane, which can be harvested or
flared.
(d) MBR Tank:The Sewage then flows into a MBBR tank where suspended as well as
fixed growth of microbial biomass converts the remaining organic matter into
carbondioxide and water. As most of the growth in this aeration system is attached
growth very little sludge is formed. Also the sludge formed is from the sloughed off
biofilms after maturation stage. The biologically treated sewage will then over flow
into a secondary settling tank for the separation of biomass from the clear supernatant.
(e) Tertiary Treatment: After the biological treatment, the treated effluent will be
collected into treated water collection tank. The treated effluent will then be fed to Dual
media filter & activated carbon filter for the further removal of residual Suspended solids,
BOD/COD, color, odor etc. The filtered clear effluent will then re-used in secondary
application as mentioned.
(f) Sludge handling: The primary & secondary sludge removed from tube settler tank shall
be taken on Sludge Holding tank and then pumped to sludge dewatering bags.
(h) Sludge Dewatering System – Sludge collected in the Secondary clarifier shall be fed to a
sludge dewatering system consisting of bag filters where water content is reduced to less
than 30% in the sludge. Dried sludge can be use as manure and supernatant can be taken
beck in collection tank.

Note.:The air diffusion mechanism in the aeration system is specially designed to ensure the
formation of Nano Bubbles through a proprietary Ventury design. The Nano-bubbles provide
for a very high gas transfer and oxygen transfer rate to the microbes while consuming low
power. Also, the Nano bubbles enhance oxidation of the organic molecules. This system will
cause a minimum disruption of microbial cells due to cavitation thus lowering the sludge
formed by microbial death. More oxygen ensures more viable biomass in the aeration system
meaning a highly efficient MLSS in the system. These features can cut the energy costs by
30% over the conventional aeration systems. Also the MBBR Media will have a low
ploughing off of the microbial biofilms and this ensures an uniform growth of the biofilm on
the surface of the MBBR Media. The net effect is a highly viable bio flock and biofilm in the
aeration tank. Also the small bubble size in the aeration tank allows for a higher retention
time of dissolved oxygen which no other systems offer. This technology allows for a quick
restart of the aeration tank in case of mechanical failures and allows for a partial on-off type
of operations of the aeration system without compromising the viability of the microbial
biomass in the aeration tank.
