Compressor Pump Down: How Low Should You Go?

Pump down is commonly used to prevent
refrigerant migration to the compressor during the
off cycle to help avoid flooded starts. It’s a common
misconception that the low pressure cut out set
point needs to be at 0 PSIG in order for a pump
down to be effective.

That is simply not true and in some cases could

shorten the life of the compressor.

All Copeland compressors have a minimum

operating pressure based on the compressor
design and refrigerant used. Follow the equipment
manufacturers’ guidelines or Copeland Application
Engineering bulletin for the correct minimum set
point.
