The GREEEN Shift Series 04: Sustainability, Resiliency, Health, and Well-Being

The United Architect of the Philippines Q.C. – Pugad Lawin Chapter, in partnership with the Philippine Green Building
Initiative, held the second part of the 2021 edition of the GREEEN Shift Series titled “The GREEEN Shift Series 03:
Sustainability, Resiliency, Health, and Well Being” last 04 December 2021, Saturday, 2pm, via online platform zoom
meeting.

The first speaker, Engr. Emmanuel Punsalan, discussed commissioning for Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). As an
introduction, IAQ became the center of discussion since the pandemic due although considered not in equal footing
with energy efficiency due to its lack of quantifiability in terms of financial savings which can only be realized during
the building operations. He then defined commissioning as a quality-oriented process, achieving, verifying, and
documenting the performance of the systems, assemblies, and facilities meets defined objectives and criteria. It
includes the value of having a commissioning team, its benefits, the requirements, the proper procedure, the

involvement in the design process, involvement in the construction phase, and the importance of having operations
and maintenance trainings and manuals. All of these data shall be shall be part of the commissioning report.

The second speaker, Engr. Danilo Kalingasan, discussed the basics and developments of the airconditioning, its
history, the technology involved, the improvement in efficiency, loading performances, the engineered systems, the
improvements of the IAQ due to the pandemic, sustainability, and the aesthetics and market demand. He further
discussed some myths of airconditioning design, the choice between efficient system and low-cost system, the
inverter system, part load performances, variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system and mini VRF system, its advantages
and disadvantages, the ASHRAE Standards, enthalpy control or energy recovery, the importance of maintaining
clean coils, the HEPA filter, sustainability, stealth units, and a summary slide of airconditioning systems for a whole
building.

A forum was held after the two lectures that centered mostly on the current pandemic, cost efficiency of the system,
system back-ups, computerized operations, after-sales services, preferences and biases, use of the condensates for
the rainwater harvesting, filtering systems and others.

The seminar was well attended by forty-two (42) participants from Pugad Lawin and from various chapters.

Pugad Lawin Supports NAW

The United Architect of the Philippines Q.C. – Pugad Lawin Chapter, attends the online programs of the National
Architecture Week last December 6-10, 2021, Monday to Friday, via zoom meeting.

The opening ceremony was held on Day 01 with the opening remarks by the NAW 2021 Chairman Ar. Reynaldo
Cristobal, Jr., and the welcome remarks by the UAP National President, ar. Armando Eugene De Guzman III. Messages
were given by the President of the Republic of the Philippines, Mr. Rodrigo Duterte, and Vice-President, Mrs. Leni
Robredo. Program proper followed afterwards.

Talks for Day 01 includes “The Architect’s Role in Nation Building” by Prof. Anoma Pieris, PhD, “Architectural Lessons
from the Covid-19 Pandemic” by Prof. Amanda Achmadi, Phd, “Architecture and Urban Planning of the Future” by Dr./Ar.
Iderlina Mateo-Babiano, PhD, “The Architect’s Foresight” by Ar. Sylvester Shaun Seño, and the documentary “Architects
Transcending Uncertainties” by Ar. Murielle Gallardo-Cristobal.

Talks for Day 02 includes “Acritektura” by Ar. Maria Mynn Porciuncula-Alfonso, “Indigenous Practices on Filipino
Architecture” by Ar, Isidro Malaque III, and “The Art and Science of Home Improvement” by Ar. Marietta Segovia. It also
features a documentary “The Architects – The Society” by Ar. Reginald Cabrera.

Day 03 presents “EIA for RLA’s: An Architect’s Guide to Environmental Impact Assessment” by Enp. Ibylou Bandala-
Golla, “Significant Role of Technology in Disaster Mitigation or Recovery Efforts in Natural and Built Environment” by
engr. Reginald Mercado, “Indigenous Bioculture as Vital Contributor to Regenerative Living + Ecopreneur’s Competitive
Advantage in a Time of Crisis” Innovative Architectural Business Models by Ar. Ronnie Yumang, and “Significance of
Quality Documentation in Promoting a Brand or Advocacy” by Dir. Pablo Gabriel Malvar,

The program proper for Day 04 begins with “Sino ang Arkitekto?” by Ar. Jodie Elexa Casco, followed by “Life-Centric
Architecture: Livable Communities for the Future and Better Normal” by NEVP Ar. Richard Garcia, fuap, and “Architects
Advocating Social Inclusion” by Ar. Jaime Silva, fuap.

Talks for Day 05 includes “Constructing Filipino Identity Through Architecture” by Ar. Gerald Rey Lico, “Heritage
Preservation and Urban Development” by Ar. Ma. Luisa Valerio. The day was capped with a Balangkasan titled “Should
online Education be Pursued in Philippine Architecture Degree Programs beyond the COVID-19 Pandemic?”

The chapter dis not participated in Day 06 for its annual Christmas party was simultaneous with the Day 06 activity.

Pugad Lawin Held It’s First Balangkasan Meeting

The United Architect of the Philippines Q.C. – Pugad Lawin Chapter, held its first Balankasan Meeting with the
Balangkasan Chairman Ar. Jill Rochelle Sevilla last 06 December 2021, via online platform Google Meet.

Chairman, Ar. Jill Rochelle Sevilla discussed the history and proper way of conducting the scholarly debate called
the “Balangkasan”. She commended the chapter for a good topic and proceeded with initial program made by Chapter
President Ar. Leiron Mark De Guzman. With the title and program being satisfactory for the chairman, she then
advised the members of board to conduct another meeting with the panelist days before the Balangkasan for their
briefing and orientation, game planning, as to be noted by the chapter secretary and an assistant on separate rooms
/ link.

The meeting was attended by Chapter President Ar. Leiron Mark De Guzman, Secretary Ar. Jacobsen Montoya,
Directors Ar. Cesar Turla, Jr., Ar. Alvin Matias, and Ar. Dante Aguirre.

The light and fruitful meeting adjourned about 8:00 in the evening.

Pugad Lawin Visits the Lazuli Showroom

The United Architect of the Philippines Q.C. – Pugad Lawin Chapter, visit the Lazuli showroom December 2021 in
BGC Taguig last 07, 2pm in the afternoon.

The afternoon started with the tour of the showroom with Ms. Desherie Avila as the guide. The board of officers were
shown with the latest ceramic fixtures, faucets, shower sets, and other bathroom accessories. The showroom also
boasts of the kitchen luxury cabinets and counter products.

Came after the tour was program manager’s report for the upcoming chapter Christmas Party. VP-Operations Ar. Joy
Cerdon reported that give-aways were already been purchased and sorted. The party is ready to go.

A short mid-year planning session was presided by the Chapter President Ar. Leiron De Guzman. Discussed were
the activities for the next half of the fiscal year with focus on the third quarter activities.

A simple exchange gift was done after the planning session.

The activity ended at around 6:00pm.

Paskong Pugee: Pangalawang Pagaspas

The United Architect of the Philippines Q.C. – Pugad Lawin Chapter, held its third annual Christmas Party, titled
Paskong Pugee: Pangalawang Pagaspas, last 11 December 2021, Saturday, 5:00pm, via online platform Zoom
Meeting.

The second Christmas party held online gave fun in the afternoon for the chapter with games and three rounds of
raffles. The games include the bring me contest, identify the Christmas Song (instrumental version), “Pera o Pugee”,
and the best white Christmas and most creative facemask costume contest.

The three rounds of raffles were categorized according to activeness of members which is evident with their
attendances for the current fiscal year. This is partly giving good credits to the active members. The first round was
the minor prize for the all the members regardless of their attendances, and all have their raffle prizes. The second
round was for the active members who attended at least three GMM’s. The final round, which is for the major raffle
items, was exclusive to members with more than three attendances. Committee Chairman for Government and
External Affairs Ar. Nilda Santos was big winner for winning the LED TV.

It was hours of fun and light moments that extended till about 9pm in the evening.

Pugad Lawin Chapter Joins the International Conference of Architects

The United Architect of the Philippines Q.C. – Pugad Lawin Chapter participates in the National Architecture Week
Program by the National University titled PagtaNAW Campus Caravan, last 15 December 2021, via online platform
Zoom Meeting.

First speaker was Ar. Dante Aguirre for the design practice category. He discussed his journey from being an
apprentice in an architectural firm, to handling his father’s own architectural firm, to having his own firm. He discussed
a few of his previous projects, how he got his clients, and the concept and logic of his designs.

Came next was Ar. Hanna Arcilla for the fit-out category. She discussed how her journey from being a student who
is not that good in the technicalities of the design but good in analyzing and implementation that led her, and her
partner, to establish their construction firm. She also discussed her projects including collaboration with the design
architects, proper project implementation, and providing satisfactory project results.

Last of the batch was Ar. Jacobsen Montoya for the green building assessment category. He discussed the his journey
on how he came to be a green building assessor, the current global situation, the different green building professionals
and professional organizations involved, the workflow, and the green building category.

Simultaneous with the event is the thesis seminar Thesis It 2.0 with the chapter president Ar. Leiron Mark De Guzman
participated with his topic “Site Justification and Analysis.

It was a fun afternoon of sharing the practice with the future architects of the National University.

The Chapter Donates to the Victims of Typhoon Odette

The United Architect of the Philippines Q.C. – Pugad Lawin Chapter drops bags
of donations at the lobby of the UAP Headquarters, Sct. Rallos St., Brgy. Laging
Handa, Quezon City, at about 1:00pm.

The clothes were from the family of the chapter secretary Ar. Jacobsen Montoya
and were donated in representation of the chapter.

Some chapter members, with names withheld, directly sent their monetary
donations to the UAP’s bank account.

The four bags of clothes were received by the guard on duty.
