Pitch #3 EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED

BOOK
Everything You Ever Wanted by Luiza Sauma is a novel detailing a TV show called "Life
on Nyx", which offers an escape from the mundane and pressure-filled life on Earth, where
people find themselves lost in the monotonous routine of work and social media. The chance to
start anew on a beautiful planet, free from the distractions of modern life, beckons as 100
winners are invited to establish a meaningful existence on Nyx. With no return option, they
embark on a journey filled with hope, leaving behind the superficiality of Earth for a purposeful
life on the new frontier.

ME
I feel connected to this story because of my original decision to leave Boston and come to
Los Angeles. When I was living in Boston, I felt like I constantly struggled to find “my people”,
and grew a distaste for the city because I felt rejected by the people in it. I thought leaving
everyone behind and starting a new life 3,000 miles away would fix my problems, but all the
shiny newness faded away once I realized it all stemmed from inner problems I had to work
through. I feel like I can relate to the main character, Iris, because of her similar motivation to
leave behind her whole world for a new one.

LOGLINE
The logline for my series is: When a young professional battling with depression joins a
TV show that offers escape from Earth's monotonous and superficial society to start a
meaningful life on a distant planet, she bonds with fellow colonists and undergoes personal
transformations, ultimately deciding whether to stay on the planet permanently or fight to find a
way back to Earth.

SYNOPSIS
The series would begin with the journey of IRIS (20s), a young professional living in a
futuristic Earth society. Frustrated by the monotony of her daily routine and the pressures of
social media validation, she discovers the Life on Nyx TV program, which offers a chance to
escape to a new planet and establish a life with purpose and meaning. Iris decides to join the
program, leaving behind their old life and embarking on a journey to the distant planet Nyx with
99 other winners. The season explores their anticipation, fears, and emotional farewells as they
start a new life on an alien world. As they face the challenges of building a society from scratch
and bonding with their fellow colonists, the allure of Nyx is tested, and the characters grapple
with doubts, nostalgia for Earth, and interpersonal conflicts. Throughout the season, they
undergo personal transformations and discover the true meaning of a meaningful life beyond
material possessions and online validation. The climax comes when the characters must make a
final decision: whether to stay on Nyx permanently or return to Earth, leading to a powerful and
emotionally charged conclusion.

CHARACTERS
Our main protagonist would be IRIS (mid 20s), who battles with depression and anxiety
during her time on Earth. She can be characterized by her initial distaste for Earth society and
social media, wanting an escape from the hole she feels she’s built herself into. Another
character we would see is Iris’ younger sister MONA (early 20s), who is the one who initially
told Iris that she hopes Nyx is “everything she ever wanted”. She is the character to eventually
push Iris to come back to Earth. The main antagonist in the series is NORMAN BEST (late 40s),
the TV show host and holds the secrets behind this human experiment.

TONAL COMPS
One of the best tonal comps for Everything You Ever Wanted would be The Peripheral
(2022-) due to being a similar grounded genre sci-fi, with its female protagonist expressing
themes of dislike for ordinary Earth life and getting mixed up in a greater technological
conspiracy. Also, due to the themes of social media and modern life, certain episodes of Black
Mirror could be a good tonal comparison for this series. The reality show “Life on Nyx”
resembles that of The Colony, reality TV show where a group of strangers must work together to
build a new society in a simulated post-apocalyptic world.

STREAMING
Everything You Ever Wanted would best fit on a premium or streaming service due to its
modern and progressive themes. Also, the budget would likely be higher to support the landscape
of the planet Nyx. After reviewing the mandate list, this series would be a good match for Apple
TV due to their mandates for sci-fi and female driven dramas. This could also be a good match
for Peacock due to their need for more sci-fi as well as book IP.

WHY NOW
Everything You Ever Wanted tells a story audiences right now need to hear. With so much
emphasis on social media and the superficialities of daily life, its commentary on the negatives of
fleeing a life instead of working through our problems would be beneficial to watch on the
screen. The show's premise of deciding between a new life on a distant planet and the familiar
Earth raises existential questions about the meaning of life and the choices we make. These
thought-provoking themes resonate with contemporary audiences seeking deeper, philosophical
storytelling. Also, audiences are always more receptive to shows that represent characters
dealing with mental health conditions. Overall, the timely combination of mental health
awareness, a desire for escapism, the popularity of science fiction, and the exploration of
profound themes makes now the perfect moment to create a compelling and emotionally
impactful show with this logline.
