MODEL EXAMINATION-A- MAY/JUNE 2022

Regulation : 2019 Semester : IV Department : AGRICULTURE ENGINEERING
B19AGT403- THERMODYNAMICS AND HEAT TRANSFER
(Common to ) If applicable
Time: Three Hours Maximum Marks: 100
PART A Answer ALL Questions (5 x 4 = 20 Marks) CO K
1. Define Thermodynamics. (CO1) (K1)

2. Show the application of thermodynamics (CO2) (K1)

3. Define the turbine. (CO3) (K1)

4. Define conduction. (CO4) (K1)

5. What are the parallel flow and counter flow heat exchangers? (CO5) (K1)

PART B Answer ALL Questions (5 x 13 = 65 Marks) Marks CO K

11.a) Make use of the internal energy and its applications. (13) (CO1) (K3)

(OR)
12.a) Air at a temperature of 17degree C passes through a heat (13) (CO2) (K3)
exchanger at a velocity of 30 m/s where its temperature is
raised to 870 degree C.It then enters a turbine with the same
velocity of 34 m/s and expands until the temperature falls to
650 degree C.On leaving the turbine, the air is taken at a
velocity of 64 m/s to a nozzle where it expands until the
temperature has fallen to 500 degreeC.If the air flow rate is 3
kg/s. Identify the (i) The rate of heat transfer to the air in the
heat exchanger. (ii) The power output from the turbine
assuming no heat loss. (iii)The velocity at exit from nozzle,
assuming no heat loss. Take the enthalpy of air as
(h=cp .T).Where cp is the specific heat equals to 1.005kJ/kg K
and T is the temperature.
(OR)
13.a) Importance of the internal combustion engines. (13) (CO3) (K3)

(OR)
14.a) An aluminum rod (k=220W/mK) 2cm in diameter and 25cm (13) (CO4) (K3)
long protrudes from a wall which is maintained at 330 degree
celcius. The end of the rod insulated and the surface of the rod is
exposed to air at 30 degree celcius. The heat transfer efficient
between the rod surface and air is 16 W/m2K. Calculate heat

lost by the rod and the temperature of the rod at a distance of
10cm from the wall.
(OR)
15.a) Explain about the heat exchanger and its advantages. (13) (CO5) (K3)

(OR)
PART C Answer ALL Questions ( 1x 15 = 15 Marks) Marks CO K
16.a) In a counter flow heat exchanger, water at 20 degree Celsius (15) (CO5) (K3)
flowing at the rate of 1350kg/h. It is heated by oil of specific
heat 2300 J/kg K flowing at the rate of 520 kg/h at inlet
temperature of 96 degree Celsius. Determine the following
1.Total heat transfer, 2.Outlet temperature of water, 3.Outlet
temperature of oil. Take Overall the transfer co efficient is 1098
W/m2 K. Heat exchanger area is 1.5m2.
