Experiment No.1
Separation Techniques
Abstract
Throughout our daily lives, separating one substance to another has become a task. With this
experiment, the students were able to come across different separation techniques that they will be
applying. They performed the separation technique such as evaporation, filtration, magnetism and
chromatography; each of these separation techniques has their own procedures that the students will be
following; on evaporation they will be boiling salt water until the water evaporates, they will be using a
filter paper with a beaker to filter the sand with water , they will use a magnet to attract the iron fillings
from the sand mixture and use rubbing alcohol to separate the ink on pens. After the students followed the
procedures, they were able to separate one substance from another even if the mixture itself was a
homogeneous mixture. Salt water , mixture of iron fillings and sand, the sand and water and the ballpen
inks were separated from one another, hence, we can say that different separation techniques depend on
the type of matter and mixture of the substance.
