A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 5

QUARTER 1 WEEK 4
September 21, 2023
8:10 – 8:50 AM

CHANGES IN MATTER THROUGH APPLICATION OF

HEAT

Prepared by:

ALYSSA FAITH A. BURGOS

Teacher I/Grade 5 Class Adviser

Noted by:

SAMSON Z. BARTOLABA
Head Teacher I
I. OBJECTIVE
At the end of the lesson, the Grade 5 pupils should be able to:
1. Explain how matter changes through heat (S5MT-Ic-d-2)

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Changes in Matter through Application of Heat

References: Science 5 Beyond Borders Textbook pages 30-32
Science Quarter 1 – Module 2 Lesson 1: How Matter Changes When Applied with Heat
Materials: Photo of mother cooking food, laptop, power point presentation, video presentation and
activity sheets , candles, paper, leaf, ice, and water.
Values: Develop a genuine love for doing household chores like cooking

III. PROCEDURE
A. Drill

Directions: Identify the kind of change the following activities undergo when there is an application of
heat. Write PC if it is Physical Change or CC if it is Chemical Change.

_____________________________ 1. Burning of wood

_____________________________ 2. Melting of candle

_____________________________ 3. Boiling of water

_____________________________ 4. Cooking rice

_____________________________ 5. Frying egg

B. Review
 Is oxygen needed in chemical change? Why ?
 What are the three things needed for combustion to occur?

C. LESSON PROPER

1. Motivation: Show to class a photo of a mother cooking food. Ask them the following
questions:

 How does she cook food?

 What did she use to cook food?
 Is it safe to eat raw foods? Why ?
Motivation: Heat in Everyday Life
Tell students to identify the objects that produce heat. They should encircle the objects that produce heat
in the picture.
2. UNLOCKING OF DIFFICULTIES
MATTER = It is anything that occupies space and has mass.
REVERSIBLE = These are changes that can be undone.
IRREVERSIBLE = These are changes that can't be undone.
3. PRESENTATION
At the end of the lesson, the Grade 5 pupils should be able to:
• Explain how matter changes through heat
Activity: Hot Pans

Science Skills: Observing and Describing

1. Instruct the learners to watch a video presentation about ice cubes and butter
2. Ask the learners to observe what happens on the two video clips.
3. Instruct them to record their observations.
4. Have the learners answer the following questions:

 Both the ice cube and butter are solids. How did they change while being heated?
(The ice cube and butter changed into liquid.)

 What happened to ice when it was heated?

(The ice cube melted.)

 What change took place when the ice cube and butter are heated?
(Physical change in matter was observed in the activity.)
4. DISCUSSION
1. Present to the learners a power point presentation about the changes in matter through
application of heat.

Ask them the following questions:

 Are there any chemical changes that occur because of heat?

(Yes. Some of the chemical changes caused by heat include combustion.)

 Are all changes caused by heat reversible? Why?

(Some changes caused by heat like melting of ice and evaporation of water are

reversible. These examples are physical changes caused by heat and can be reversed. The

water from ice can be frozen back to ice again and evaporated water will become water

again when it condenses and falls as rain. On the other hand, chemical changes brought

by heat like the cooked egg cannot be reversed because the chemical composition of the

matter has been changed or affected.

5. APPLICATION

Divide the class into 5 groups. The leaders of each group will pick up a paper to determine which object

are they going to use in their activity. They will observe what will happen to their chosen object when

applied with heat. After observing, each group will choose a reporter to explain in front of the class their

report about their observation.

Materials to be applied with heat

1. Water

2. Ice

3. Paper

4. Leaf

6. GENERALIZATION
Heat application in matter results to either physical and chemical change.

IV. EVALUATION

A. Direction: Read the following questions carefully. Then, encircle the letter of the
correct answer.

1. Which of the following is an example of chemical change when heat is applied?

A. Burning of wood C. Freezing of water
B. Cutting clothes D. Sharpening of a pencil

2. Which is TRUE about chemical change?

A. A new product is formed
B. Chemicals change as a result of physical change
C. The product can be changed to its original form.
D. A chemical change is more important than any other process.

3. What happens when a piece of paper is burned inside a tin can?

A. A new material is formed.
B. There are no changes.
C. Both physical changes and chemical changes happen.
D. It became ashes and after a few minutes, it turn to its original form.

4-5. What happens when heat is applied on matter? 2 points

V. ASSIGNMENT
Briefly explain how heat is related to the following activities. You can use other books or
the internet as reference.

1. Glassblowing (shaping glass)

VI. REMARKS

The evaluation consists of five items. Among thirty-three Grade Five pupils, nineteen

pupils passed while fourteen pupils failed. Eight pupils got four points. Eleven pupils got three

points. Nine pupils got two points. Four pupils got one point and one pupil got zero. Fifty eight

percent of the pupils passed the evaluation while forty two percent of the pupils failed.

VII. REFLECTION
I learned that I still need to develop my skills in managing my time wisely so that I can

finish the lesson for forty minutes only. I need to manage my Grade 5 pupils by setting rules and

instructing them that they need to finish their activity within the allotted time. Also, ask limited

number of questions so that time will not be wasted. Also unlocking of difficulties must be done

by presenting the words and asking the pupils to give the meaning. Also, use PowerPoint

presentation to cater to pupils who are auditory and visual learners. Importantly, provide

activities that will also cater for pupils who are kinesthetic learners. Lastly, I should continue

learning so that I can teach my pupils effectively.
