1 SITE CONDITIONS
1.1 Environment
The BP Chemicals Saltend Site is a fully integrated chemical site processing Methane,
Ethylene, and Methanol to produce acetyls and its derivatives. The site is characterised as an
industrial chemical works, with airborne dust and contaminates in a coastal location. The
environment also contains airborne chlorides from estuary and cooling tower drift which can
cause external stress corrosion cracking at certain locations.
1.3 Rainfall
Refer to British Standard BS6367 for rates of rainfall and storm return periods. For
approximation the following maximum storm rates may be used:-

NOTES:
1. Thermal design of coolers shall be based on ??°C cooling water inlet temperature.
2. Maximum allowable cooling water temperature rise across equipment 10°C. Maximum
allowable cooling water temperature rise shall be used for the equipment rated condition.
3. Permitted cooling water pressure differential is 0.7 bar maximum across individual items
of equipment. Where an individual item is part of a package then 1.0 bar maximum
across the total system including associated piping and control valves is allowed.
4. All steam users shall be designed for full vacuum. Temperatures are taken to be
saturated. Steam fouling factor is 0.0001m2degC/W
5. Instrument air will be oil-free and dust free with dew point of minus 40°C at atmospheric
pressure.
6. Air users shall be suitable for operation at a minimum pressure of ?? barg
7. Water supply and return pressures are stated at grade level.
8. Plant Air if required to be generated locally within equipment packages.
9.. Cooling Water is treated to inhibit scaling and corrosion, control pH (range 7-8), remove
suspended solids and prevent growth of micro-organisms. Heat exchangers shall be
designed for a minimum CW velocity of 1 m/s, with the CW side fouling factor based on
?????? m2deg0C/W at 1m/s.
10. Cooling Water specification:-
pH 6-7.5
Conductivity <5,000µS
CaCO3 <1,400ppm w/w
PO4 9-20 ppm w/w
Cl- <240ppm w/w
TSS <30ppm w/w
11. Natural Gas Composition:-
Average %(mol): C1 87.9%, C2 6.5%, C3 2%, C4+ 0.7%, CO2 1.9%, N2+ inerts 1.0%, S
4.8ppm mass (1mg/sm3 natural + 6mg/sm3 stench @36.7% S).
