1 SITE CONDITIONS
1.1 Environment

The BP Chemicals Saltend Site is a fully integrated chemical site processing Methane,
Ethylene, and Methanol to produce acetyls and its derivatives. The site is characterised as an
industrial chemical works, with airborne dust and contaminates in a coastal location. The
environment also contains airborne chlorides from estuary and cooling tower drift which can
cause external stress corrosion cracking at certain locations.

1.2 Special Local Considerations

The presence of chemical processing plants on site creates a special requirement to

investigate the possibility that they could create potentially harmful risks to personnel,
structures and/or equipment. Potential factors considered include explosion with blast shock
wave, thermal radiation and toxic release. Full risk analyses will be required for the impact (if
any) of these factors on any new site plant or building, taking into account its actual location
and type of construction. Additional design criteria may be imposed as a result of such a
study, including blast loading, surface fire resistance and/or the need for breathing protection.

1.3 Rainfall

Annual average 650 mm

Refer to British Standard BS6367 for rates of rainfall and storm return periods. For
approximation the following maximum storm rates may be used:-

Design Maximum in 1 hour 13 mm

Design Maximum in 24 hours 50 mm

1.6 Wind Speed

m/s
Basic Wind Speed Beaufort Scale 3-4

Calculation of Wind loads on Any one of two methods that are acceptable:-
Equipment and Structures (1) CP3 Chapter V : Pt 2 based on a gust wind
speed of 45 m/s
(2) BS6399 Pt 2 based on hourly mean wind speed
of 24 m/s
In both cases values are expected to be exceeded on
average 1 in 50 years at a height of 10m above
ground.

Note that although BP Company technical practices

currently recommend the CP3 method, both are
acceptable methods.

Designers should note that the two standards have

different approaches and data is not interchangeble
between the two calculations.

(The location is in an area that is unlikely to flood

except in extreme conditions. This takes into account
the benefit of flood defences that exist in this area.
Flood defences reduce but do not completely remove
the likelihood of flooding and can be over topped or fail
in extreme weather conditions.)
