1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This work instruction details about Thorough Examination and Testing of HOOKS

3.4 Check security and operation of safety latch (if hook is fitted with one)
3.5 Distortion, check with Tables or Drawing to ascertain whether hook has opened out, also
that sizes are correct for load to be carried, if opening of the hook has increased by more than
one-fifth of its correct measurement, scrap this hook .
3.6 Examine for cracks, nicks, scores etc., paying particular attention to the inside of the hook.
Any nicks, scores or places where the metal has been hammered back into itself (gall marks)
should be filed out so as to remove the defect and blended away at each side to form a smooth
curve. If the amount of metal removed is more than 1164" per 1 " of depth of the section, the
hook should be scrapped.

3.7 Wear in eye allowance as for steel chain. Wear in hook 8% of depth may be allowed.
Round section hooks are best measured with the gauge recommended for steel chain, if within
the range of that instrument.

5.3.1 After completion of examination as per sec. 3, the hooks shall be fitted to suitable
calibrated and certified Test Machines and proof load tested as following:

, 5.3.2.PROOF LOADS FORMULAS.
5.3.3 Examine for deformity, damage or cracking after the proof load test.
5.4 When deemed necessary magnetic particle inspection shall be carried out on the hook after
Proof load Test and MPI Report Submitted to Petro lift for review.
5.5 If NTI is already done, check its previous MPI report for Validity, and then the hook shall be
stamped with a unique ID. Number. Mark Safe Working Load details.
