HOW INFORMATION PASSES ACROSS A SYNAPSE

The gap between two neurones is called a synapse. When a nerve impulse arrives at the end of the first
neurone it causes chemicals to be released into the gap. These move across the gap by diffusion. These
chemicals then attach to the membrane of the second neurone and set off a new electrical impulse. Electrical
impulses travel very quickly along neurones. The chemicals move across the gap more slowly. This means that
reactions which involve a lot or neurones and so a lot of synapses are not as fast as reactions which have very
few neurones. The quickest reactions are spinal reflexes. These involve only 3 neurones. These are a sensory
neurone, a relay neurone and a motor neurone.

1. Computers can give a more precise reaction

time as they remove the opportunity for human
error.
2. Computers can give time in milliseconds, so they
are more accurate.
3. The computer removes the chance of the catcher
anticipating when the ruler might be dropped.
