Interpersonal communication
What is it?

 Exchange of information, ideas and feelings.


 Involves two or more people.
 Verbal or non-verbal delivery.
 Clear and concise.
 Response or Feedback.

Name and describe the 4 Principles of interpersonal communication?

1. Inevitable: Interpersonal communication is indeed inevitable in human interactions. People


communicate even when they don't use words; their nonverbal cues, body language, and
expressions still convey messages. Recognizing the inevitability of communication can
highlight the importance of being mindful of how we communicate in various situations.

2. Irreversible: Communication, once spoken or conveyed, cannot be completely undone. Words


and messages have a lasting impact, and even if apologies or clarifications are made, the
initial message may still leave an impression. This principle underscores the importance of
thinking before speaking and being responsible for one's words.

3. Complicated: Interpersonal communication is complex due to the multitude of factors that


influence it, including personal experiences, emotions, cultural backgrounds, and individual
communication styles. Recognizing this complexity can encourage individuals to be patient,
open-minded, and adaptable in their interactions with others.

4. Contextual: Communication is highly influenced by the context in which it occurs. The setting,
the relationship between the communicators, the cultural norms, and the specific situation all
play a role in shaping the communication process. Understanding the contextual nature of

communication helps individuals tailor their approach to be more effective and appropriate in
different situations.
