INTRODUCTION

Bituminous mixes, also known as asphalt mixes, are used in the surface layer of road and airport
pavements. Typically, the mixes are made up of aggregate and asphalt cements. Some types of
bituminous mixes are used in the base course of pavement. It is primarily a matter of selecting
and proportioning constituent materials in order to achieve desired properties in the finished
pavement structure.

OBJECTIVE

The objective marshal stability test is to determine the optimum binder content of given
bituminous mix by Marshall method of mix design.

THEORY

A Marshall Stability test should be performed to identify the appropriate bitumen content of the
mixture to be utilized, ensuring that the mixture created is both workable and structurally sound.
We will prepare several distinct bitumen premix samples for the Marshall stability test, and each
premix sample will be examined for stability and flow. These parameters will be compared in six
graphs to determine the best bitumen for stability.

PROCEDURE

1) Sieve aggregate to obtain the aggregate retained on the sive size of 20mm, 14mm
and 10mm.
2) Dry the cement and sand.
3) Fry the aggregate with temperatures between 130-140 Celsius and add cement and
sand when temperatures between 130-140 Celsius.
4) Heat the bitumen until become a liquid while waiting the materials been fried.
5) Then mix the bitumen with the materials that has been fried.
6) After that, put grease inside the mould and put piece of filter paper into the mould.
Pour the mix into mould and put filter paper on the top surface that has been flatten.
7) Put the mould on pedestal and compact it on top and bottom, 65 times for each
surface.
8) After the mix become solid wait for 30-45 minutes for sample be cold. When
sample has been cold taking out from mould and take the reading of weighting in
the air and in the water.
9) Then, soaked the sample in the water for 30-45 minutes with a temperature of 60
Celsius.
10) Clean the surface of the head tester and put the specimen in the middle of the head.
Fix the head with the right position of the sample.
11) Place the head tester equipped with specimen on the pedestal of the Marshall testing
machine.
12) Turn on the machine and record the maximum stability and the maximum flow.
