Chapter 1

The problem

Overview

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a presistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest.

Also called major depressive disorer or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and

behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble

doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn’t worth living.

Introduction

Background of the study

Anxiety and depression are two of the most common obstacles teens and young adults

face and it’s beginning to take a serious toll in the classcroom. Every year more cases of

Anxiety and Depression are reported in children and teens. 1 in every 8 children has anxiety,

according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America(ADAA), 80% of children

with an anxiety disorder and 60% of children with depression are not receiving treatment.

According to th Social-Emotional Learning(2022)

Students suffering from depression and anxiety are almost five times more likely to

consider suicide that adults with the same mental health issues.Depression and anxiety can

result in a student missing classes, ignoring tasks given or handing in incomplete work. These
students may show signs of hopelessness and despondence and may withdraw from

classmates and friends.

There have been a number of studies over the past decade on the prevalence of depression

and anxiety among students. It was found that around 25% of students have a diagnosable

mental health condition. Of these students close to half of them do not seek treatment or ask

for help. More than 80% struggle to cope on a daily basis and 50% suffer from such intense

anxiety or depression that they fail in their studies or achieve much lower results than they

would be capable of achieving under normal circumstances. (INcompassing Education, 2022)

According to AtlaticFellows(2022)

Following the Fellows’ discussion, Dr. Ginger Ramirez conducted an initial

investigation of news articles and media reports into youth suicide rates in the philippines.

Her preliminary research found that there were 44 cases suicides every moth; and of the 40

suicide deaths reported, 23(58%) were below 30 years old. This disturbing data could be

useful in contextualizing interventions.

Many students in Wao Lanao Del Sur has experience Depression and Anxiety, cause them to

commit suicide it is because of niether family problems, financial, lonliness or lack of

attention. It also affect their academic performances


Statement of the problem

Generally, this study was conducted to determine the effects of depression and

anxiety on the academic performance of students.

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions:

1.How many has experience depression and anxiety in grade 10 students of Mindanao State

University?

2. How depression and anxiety affects their academic performances?

3.What are the causes of their depression?

4. How many students having suicidal thoughts?


Scope of Delimitations

This study is limited to the effects of depression and anxiety on the academic

performance of Grade 10 students at Mindanao State University Community High School

base on their experiences. The research instrument is the questionnair and the research will

specifically focus on the Grade 10 students of Mindanao State University Wao-Community

High School

with five to ten respondents only so that you won’t have a hard time analyzing the results.

The study was conducted during the Third Quarter Period, School Year 2023, Which was the

target period of the research

Definition of terms

Clarification is important for better comprehension, This section include words or

terminology that have been used repeatedly in the research process

The following is a list of the said terminology:

Depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you

feel, the way you think and how tou act.Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes

feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. It can lead to a

variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease your ability to function at work

and at home.(Felix Torres,M.D.,MBA,DFAPA,2020)


Grade 10 Student is a person enrolled in a school or other educational institution and

the final year of junior high school.

Research is a creative and systematic work undertaken to increase the stock of

knowledge. It involeves the collevtion, organization, and analysis of information to increase

understanding of a topic or issue. A research project can be an expansion on previous work in

aq specific field.

Anxiety is a feeling of fear, dread, and uneasiness. It might cause you to sweat, feel

restless and tense, and have a rapid heartbeat.

Academic achievment or academic performances is the extent to which a student,

teacher or institution has attained their short or long-term educational goals. Completion of

educational benchmarks such as secondary school diplomas and bachelor’s degrees represent

academic achievement
