TOPIC 1.CLOSED-MOULD TECHNIQUES IN COMPOSITES
MANUFACTURE

1.1 Press moulding techniques;

a. Introduction to hot press (high pressure) moulding and
cold press (low pressure) moulding
SUB-TOPIC b. Applicable materials (fibres, resin, premix, prepreg)
c. Tools and machine requirement
d. Moulding setup and procedures
e. Process advantages and limitations

After completing the subject, the students should be able to

1. Describe the fundamental aspects of selected closed-mould
processing and specialised fabrication techniques
commonyly employed in composites industry
2. Demonstrate the ability to select and safely use the
processing equipment and tools required for each moulding
LEARNING
technique.
OUTCOME
3. Practice and operate hot press and cold press moulding and
procedure
4. Describe relationships between processing conditions,
product properties and end-performance
5. Define general types of industrial safety hazards that exist
and the factors involved with designing and implementing

e. Opening speed
f. Moulding time
Note:
Refer to instruction manual of the
Press manufacturer’s on setting of
parameters for moulding
4. Close the platens
5. Allow the platens to achieve the
setup temperature prior to moulding.
Depending on type of press and
model typical time is 1 to 2 hours.
6. Close the platen to compress the
charge at the process parameters as
required
7. At the end of the moulding cycle,
open the platen
8. Carefully demould the moulded
product utilizing approriate
demoulding tools.
9. Shut down the machine as follows;
a. Switch off the heater
b. Switch off the control panel
c. Switch off the main power
