Objectives: At the end of the lesson, students are

expected to:
1. Summarize the different parts of the brain, its
processes and functions.
2. Respond meaningfully to effects of challenges
in one’s life
3. Show and tell one’s favorite part of the brain
and its functions

THREE MAIN PARTS OF THE

BRAIN

1. CEREBRUM
Cerebrum is situated in the uppermost part of the brain.
The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and on its
outermost surface area is called the cerebral cortex.
Cerebrum is divided into two hemispheres:
-the right cerebral hemisphere controls the left side of the
body
-while the left cerebral hemisphere controls the right side
of the body.

Parts of the Brain that are connected to

CEREBRUM
q The cerebrum receives sensory information from the thalamus.
q Thalamus is connected to all major parts of the brain including the cerebral
cortex.
q The thalamus receives information, organizes and then sends information
to the cerebrum.
q Hypothalamus is located below the thalamus and above the brainstem
which links the nervous system with the endocrine system that regulates
the digestive processes
q and is also responsible for growth and development.
q The Limbic System composes parts of the cerebral cortex and
hypothalamus, that regulate various types of emotions that affect blood
temperature and blood pressure facilitated by the hypothalamus like eating
behavior.

2. CEREBELLUM
Cerebellum is located below the cerebrum
at the back of the head. The cerebellum
functions directly with the cerebrum to
receive information from the sensory system
and the spinal cord to regulate balance,
postures, and coordinate movement like
riding a bike and walking upright.

3. BRAIN STEM
The brainstem is located at the lower part of the
brain, which leads to the spinal cord. The brainstem
connects the cerebrum and cerebellum to the spinal
cord. It composes nerve fibers that carry signals to
and from all parts of the body. Its functions are for
safety and survival such as breathing, consciousness,
heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure,
digestion, and wake and sleep cycles.
BRAIN STEM
The Cerebral Cortex in the outermost layer of the
cerebrum is responsible for receiving and processing
information also in initiating a response from the
processed information in the brain. The cerebral cortex
contains four lobes that share complex relationships to
function. These are the
FRONTAL LOBE, PARIETAL LOBE,
TEMPORAL LOBE & OCCIPITAL LOBE.

Let’s locate your four lobes:

FRONTAL LOBE
PARIETAL LOBE
TEMPORAL LOBE
OCCIPITAL LOBE
CEREBRUM is the largest of the three brain
sections (85 %).
-It has four lobes :
Frontal determines personality and
emotions.
Parietal helps understand what we see and
feel.
Temporal is responsible for word and
hearing recognition
Occipital is where vision functions located.
1.The Brain is a major part of the Nervous
System, responsible for the peripheral and
autonomic responses of the other parts of the
system in the body.
2.The Central Nervous System (CNS) is
responsible for the processes, interprets and
stores sensory information, considered the
central command system, alongside the spinal
cord that acts as the bridge to the different
parts of the body.
3.There two (2) types of the nervous system,
the central and peripheral nervous system.
The Peripheral Nervous System, is located
beyond the (CNS) and handles the input and
output of the latter. It has two division,
autonomic and Somatic.
3. Autonomic is responsible for actions
or responses that are involuntary, while
Somatic, for the voluntary responses.
4. The Autonomic Division has to
system, the Parasympathetic; which is
tasked to slow down the actions and
responses of the body, while the
Sympathetic is the accelerator,
mobilizing the body for action and
output of the body.
5. A Nerve Cell or Neuron has three (3) major
structures; the axons, the cell body and the
dendrite.
6. The Brain can be divided in to three (3) major
parts, each responsible for the processes of
memory, intelligence can be found and emotion
that can be elicited.
7. The Cerebral Cortex which is the cap of the
brain, has four (4) Lobes. The Frontal, Parietal,
Temporal and Occipital Lobes.
8. The Cerebellum is responsible for the
cognitive skills, procedural learning and
movement coordination.
9. The Corpus callosum is a bridge that connects the
interaction of the two hemispheres of the brain.
10. Understanding the brain from the point of the
lateralization of the left and right hemisphere tend
to produce different evidences that suggests the
distinction of the personality. The personality of the
individual is complex and unique, therefore the
interaction and communication of both
hemispheres is needed to further understand the
complexity of personality in every individual.

Thought of the day!

The brain makes you think, feel, and behave. Its
complex interrelationship enables you to think critically,
creatively, and carefully in various situations. Those
experiences you gain develop certain reactions
towards yourself and with others which determine who
you are as a person having the right and acceptable
thought process, feeling of calmness, and self-control.
