Wrong Yarn Weight?

NO PROBLEM!
BY ANDEE GR AV ES

We all know how it goes: You have more than a few that hook; if you aren’t sure of the result, go up or down
skeins of yarn in your crafting space. Somehow it always a hook size and swatch again.
turns out that the yarn you have is rarely the yarn used in
a pattern you want to make. But instead of going out and
purchasing more yarn, you want to use some of the yarn
that you have in your stash.
This means you may need to adjust the pattern. I’m
going to share with you how, with a little bit of swatching
and simple math, you can make your hat in that stash yarn
with no problem.

Photo 2

Photo 1 In photo 2, you see the swatches I crocheted using

Red Heart With Love worsted-weight yarn. This is a yarn
Even if you are using a yarn labeled the same weight as that I work with frequently, so I had a pretty good idea

of what size hook you like, so start there. Try a swatch with fractions of a stitch.

Wrong Yar n Weight? No Probl em !

Then divide that result by 8, the number of increases in each

round of the crown.
Example: 24 x 3.5 = 84; 84 / 8 = 10.5.
This means I will crochet 10 rounds with 8 increases,
which will give me 80 stitches. Then for my 11th round I
will only work 4 increases evenly spaced, which will give me
84 stitches.
If you want a less math intense method of sizing, divide
your target circumference by 3.14 The resulting number is
the diameter you want your finished crown to match, or
your target diameter.
Example: 24 / 3.14 = 7.6433; round down to a single
decimal place = 7.6 inches.
If you like the sizes in the pattern, those target diameters

Then count the number of rounds in 1 inch. then reduce the number of increases in that round.
Next you need to decide what size hat you want. The
great thing about crocheting hats using a crown-down
construction is you can adjust the size very easily. Make the
crown smaller or larger depending on what size you want
your finished hat to be.
The size of the crown you need is determined by the
head circumference of the person you are making the hat
for. This is a measurement taken horizontally around the
head above the eyebrows and the fullest region of the back
of the head.
If you aren’t sure about the circumference for the hat
you are making, you can visit the Craft Yarn Council website:
www.craftyarncouncil.com. Look under the “Standards”
heading for “Standard Body Measurements/Sizing,” there is
a sidebar with links to their “Head Circumference Chart.” Photo 5
When deciding on the size of your finished hat, you want
to also consider “ease.” Positive ease is when a garment is Once you have your crown to the right diameter, you will

With RS facing and matching color of yarn,
sew a button in the center of the band.
To decide where to join the band to the
top of the glove, try on the glove and
wrap the band around your knuckles
so that it hugs your hand tightly, place
marker. Alternatively, look at the photos
for guidance. Thread the 12-inch tail in a
tapestry needle and sew the edge of the
band to the marked place.
Weave in remaining loose ends. C!

When sewing the

the seam by passing
the thread twice through the
post of the first stitches of
each opposite row. Do the
same at the end of the seam.
To sew on the button,
separate 1 strand from a
length of navy blue yarn and
use the remaining 2 strands
as sewing thread.
