Introduction

A standard solution is a solution with known amount of

solute dissolved in known volume of solvent.The
concentration of the solution can be calculated by using
the following formula:

Mass of solute ∈ gram

Concentration = Volume of solvent ∈liter

Molarity is also another measurement for concentration

Which refers to the number of mole of solute in certain
volume of solvent.Thus,the unit for molarity is
mol/L.The relationship between concentration and
molarity is given by the following equation:

Concentration g/ L
Molarity = MM = g /mol =mol/L

(MM=the relative molecular mass of a compound)

The process of diluting a high concentration solution can

be carried out by adding more solvent to the original
solution.During the process of dilution,the number of
moles of solute before and after dilution remains the
same.The molarities of diluted solution can be obtained
by using the following formula:

M1V1=M2V2
Where:
M1=initial molarity
V1 =initial volume
M2=final volume
V2=final molarity

In this experiment you are required to prepare 100mL of

a standard solution of 1.0M sodiun hydroxide and
perform dilution to 0.2 M.You are also required to dilute
1.0M of sulphuric acid stock to 0.1M
Objectives

1. To prepare a standard solution of 1.0M of sodium

hydroxide and diluting the solution to 0.2M
2. To dilute 1.0M of sulphuric acid stock solution to the
final concentration of 0.1M

Apparatus

Volumetric flask(50mL and 100mL)

Volumetric pipette(5mL and 10mL)
Beaker(100mL)
Filter Funnel
Glass rod
Dropper
Pipette filler or suction bulb

Chemicals

Sodium hydroxide,NaOH
1.0M sulphuric acid,H2SO4
Distilled water
Procedure

A.Preparation of 1.0M NaOH Solution

1. 4.0g of NaOH is weigh accurately.

2. Transfer the NaOH into a 100mL beaker and add
50mL of distilled water into the beaker.
3.The solution is then stirred with a glass rod until
all the NaOH dissolve.
4.By using a filter funnel,the solution is transferred
into 100mL volumetric flask.Add distilled water
until the calibration mark(use a dropper to add the
last few drops of distilled water).
5.Shake the volumetric flask by turning it upside
down a few times in order for the solution to be
homogeneous.

B.Dilution of NaOH Solution

1.Pipette 10mL of 1.0M NaOH solution that has been

prepared in Procedure A using a volumetric pipette.
2.Transfer the measured solution into a 50mL
volumetric flask and add distilled water until the
calibration mark of the flask.Make sure a dropper is
used to add the last drop of distilled water.
3.Shake the volumetric flask by turning it upside down a
few times in order for the solution to be homogeneous

C.Dilution of H2SO4 Solution

1.Accurately measure 5mL of 1.0M H2SO4 solution using

5mL volumetric pipette(the solution has been prepared
by your instructor).
2.Transfer the measured solution into a 50mL
volumetric flask and add distilled water until the
calibration mark of the flask.Make sure you use a
dropper to add the last few drops of distilled water.
3.Shake the volumetric flask by turning it upside down a
few times in order for the solution to be homogeneous.
Questions

1. Determine the volume of solution needed to prepare

the following diluted solutions from a concentrated
solution.
a. Preparations of 250mL of 5M HCL from 10MHCL
M1V1=M2V2
10M(V1)=(5M)(250mL)
(5 M )(250 mL)
V1= 10 M

V1=125mL
Dilute 125mL of 10M HCL with water until it reaches a
total volume of 250mL
b.Preparations of 300mL of 2.5M KOH from 15M KOH
M1V1=M2V2
15M(V1)=(2.5M)(300mL)
(2.5 M )(300 mL)
V1= 15 M
V1=50mL
Dilute 50mL of 15M KOH with water until it reaches a
total volume of 300mL

2. Determine the molarity of the

a. solution made by diluting a 0.125M solution of HCl
from 25 mL to the final volume of 250mL
M1V1=M2V2
(0.125M)(25mL)=M2(250mL)
(0.125 M )(25 mL)
M2 = 250 mL
M2=0.0125M

b.250mL solution containing 22.2g of NaCl

22.2
Concentration= 0.25 = 88.8g/L
88.8 g/ L
Molarity= 58.44 g/mol = 1.52M

C.NO-3 in a 500 mL solution containing 25g of Al(NO3)3.

25
Concentration= 0.5 = 50g/L
50 g/ L
Molarity of Al(NO3)3= 212.98 g /mol = 0.235M
Molarity of NO-3 =0.235x3 =0.705M
