procedures

1
Using quality tools on your farm
involves necessary and sometimes
costly investments. We can all agree
that the right tool can tremendously
speed up the work, saving both time
and money. Learning how to take
care of your farm tools is just as
2
important as finding the right tools
for your farm. However, many other
priorities of farming can often
distract us from maintaining upkeep
as a regular activity.

3
Your teacher asked you to visit the
tool room in your school. You
noticed that the cutting tools are dull
and cannot be used properly because
of the formation of rust.

4
Question:
1. What should be used to remove
the rust and sharpen the knife?
2. Do you agree or disagree?
Sandpaper could be used to tighten
the bolts and nuts of a shear?
5
The best way to prolong the useful
life of farm tools, equipment, and
materials is through regular
checkups.
Preventive maintenance will prolong
the useful life of tools and will reduce
time and effort.
6
BE PREPARED
Step 1: Prepare all the materials
needed to clean and sharpen your
tools. Sandpaper, whetstone, oil, and
rags are the basic materials used to
sharpen cutting tools.
-Use whetstone to sharpen all cutting
edges of farm tools. 7
- Apply a few drops of oil or water to the
stone
- Rub the sharp edge of the blade towards
the stone in a curved motion
- Maintain the original factory bevel or
angle

8
- When sharpening using file, do not use
oil; metal filings will accumulate and clog
the file serrations.
- Always push the file across the blade in
motion away from the body.
-Move the file diagonally, so that its
cutting teeth are biting into the metal on
the tool
9
Step 2: Select a place in your shop where you
can position your tools sturdily. Vice and
clamps are useful tools to hold your cutting
tools tightly while being sanded or cleaned.
- Use bevel vice to clamp the tool into place at
an angle
- Clamping tool into place with vises frees both
hands and it gives more control of what you
are doing.
10
Step 3: Dismantle cutting tools like hedge
shears to clean conveniently.
- Disassemble all moving parts of farm
tools like spring and pivotal joints
- Clean rust and dirt of all metal surfaces
with wire brush.
- Apply lubricating oil to prevent the
formation of rust.
11
- Clean tools thoroughly and keep them in
a dry place or tool cabinet.
- Select a place in your shop where you
can position your tools sturdily.
- Maintain a 30-degree angle between
stone and blade to form the ideal cutting
edge of the tool.

12
- Use a medium grit sandpaper to remove
rust on larger tools such as shovel, spades
and hoes.
- Tools that are worn-out should be
separated and fixed immediately to avoid
accident.

13
Step 4: Sand the tools carefully to remove
rust. Use whetstone to sharpen tools like
knives, bolos and shears, you may apply
lubricating oil to prevent the formation of
rust.
Step 5: Clean tools thoroughly and keep it
in a dry place of your tool room.

14
1. Farm tools, equipment, and
implements must be regularly checked to:
- Prolong their useful life
- Use them efficiently
- Save time and effort
2. The materials needed in sharpening
tools are:
- Whetstone - Oil
- Sand paper - Rag
