Percentage increase
The value of Yousaf’s house has gone up by 20% in the
last year. If the house was worth £150 000 1 year ago,
how much is it worth now?

Find the result in a single calculation.

The original amount is 100%:

100% 20%

Now we add 20%

We now have 120%
05/11/2023
TB Page 230-234 Lesson 10.2 Using a multiplier
Mr Mahfooz

120% = 120 = 1.20

100
So multiply by 1.2
Original Change New Multiplying Factor
100% +/- 100% +/- Change New/100

100% +20% 100% + 20% = 120% 120% ÷ 100 = 1.2

100% -25% 100% - 25% = 75% 75% ÷ 100 = 0.75

New value = Original value × Multiplying Factor

05/11/2023
TB Page 230-234 Lesson 10.2 Using a multiplier
Mr Mahfooz

So…………….. Multiplying Factor = 1.2

Original = £150 000

New value = Original value × Multiplying Factor

£180 000 = £150 000 × 1.2

120% of £150 000 = £180 000

So Yousaf’s house is now worth
= £180 000

Percentage increase
Here are some more examples using this method

Increase £50 by 60%.

160% × £50 = 1.6 × £50
= £80
Increase £86 by 7%.
107% × £86 = 1.07 × £86
= £92.02

Percentage decrease
A CD walkman originally costing £75 is reduced by
30% in a sale. What is the sale price?

The original amount is 100% like this:

70% 100% 30%

Now we subtract 30%

We now have 70% of the original amount.
05/11/2023
TB Page 230-234 Lesson 10.2 Using a multiplier
Mr Mahfooz

70% = 70
= 0.70
100
So multiply by 0.7
Original Change New Multiplying Factor
100% +/- 100% +/- Change New/100

100% +20% 100% + 20% = 120% 120% ÷ 100 = 1.2

100% -25% 100% - 25% = 75% 75% ÷ 100 = 0.75

New value = Original value × Multiplying Factor

05/11/2023
TB Page 230-234 Lesson 10.2 Using a multiplier
Mr Mahfooz

So…………….. Multiplying Factor = 0.7

Original = £75

New value = Original value × Multiplying Factor

£52.50 = £75 × 0.7

70% of £75 = £52.50

So the sale price = £52.50

Here are some more examples using this method:

Decrease £65 by 20%.
