Variables x and y are related in such a way that when is plotted against a straight

line which passes through the points (1 , 2) and (−4 , 17) is obtained.

(i) Express y in terms of x. [3]

(ii) It is claimed that the point (6, −618) can be found on the straight line.
Would you agree? Explain your answer. [2]

The diagram shows a circle passing through the vertices of a triangle ADE. The tangents
to the circle at D and E intersect at the point P. B and C are midpoints of AD and AE
respectively. Given Angle DEP = Angle AEQ, prove that

(i) triangle ABC is similar to triangle ADE , [3]

8 The amount of radioactive material, M units, in an experimental environment is given

by M =M 0 e−kt , where t is the number of months after the start of the experiment. M 0
and k are constants.

At the beginning, the amount of radioactive material is 2000 units. One month later, the
amount is reduced to 1100 units.

(i)
State the value of
M 0 and show that k =0.5978 . [3]

(ii) The use of radioactive material started on the 1st of January 2018. An
environmentalist wants to know when would the radioactive material reach the
300 units mark after it was being used. Find the time (in month and year) for
which it happened. [4]
