Introduction

This particular chapter provides an overview of the study including the

background of the study, significance of the study, statement of the problem,

objective of the study.

Background of the study

Oregano (scientific name: Origanum vulgare) also known as wild

marjarom, mountain mint, origanum, or winter marjarom, is a secretly spreading

plant with strong aromatic properties, fleshy leaves, and stems that can reach 9

meters long.

Mosquito-borne infections, including dengue, affect over 100 countries,

affecting 3500 million people and causing around one million deaths annually.

Dengue causes flu-like symptoms, including migraines, muscle and joint pain,

fever, and body rashes, which can become serious and potentially lead to death.

Oregano is a herb that is known for its strong smell. This smell is due to

the presence of compounds called thymol, a-terpinene, and carvacrol. These

compounds make oregano an effective pest control and tend to scare away insects.

For this reason, many pest-like insects do not like to come near any oregano plant.

However, it is important to note that not all insects are repelled by oregano.

Phytochemicals are eco-friendly, target-specific, and non-resistance-

creating insecticides that can be used in rural areas as a substitute for synthetic

insecticides or combined with other insecticides in integrated vector control

programs. They can be used as insecticides to kill larvae or adult mosquitoes or as

mosquito repellents. Phytochemicals are extracted from plants using various

solvent types, depending on their phytochemical polarity, and can be used as a

substitute for synthetic insecticides. (Simangan 2015)

Chemical fertilizers have several disadvantages. They contain limited

nutrients, lacking diverse micronutrients that plants need. They also cause

pollution, leading to green waterways and depleted oxygen for fish. Over-

fertilization or pH balance troubles can occur, causing damage to landscapes and

toxic build-up in the soil. Additionally, chemical fertilizers require more frequent

application, providing fast but unsustainable results. Organic fertilizers, on the

other hand, nourish the soil structure and require less application for long-term

well-being.

Based on the study of (Bigata, 2019), Oregano organic pesticide is

highly effective, with essential oil acting as a repellent against pests and insects in

plants. Researchers suggest reducing odor and making the liquid clear for safety

and efficiency. It is also more affordable and efficient than chemically-based

pesticides.

The purpose of this study is to ascertain the effect of oregano as an

insecticide on eggplant, aiming to evaluate its efficacy in controlling pests.

Hypothesis of the study

There is no significant difference between the effects of oregano as an

insecticide and a control treatment on the number and type of pests on eggplant

plants, and on the yield and quality of the eggplants produced.

Significance of the study

The research study aims to determine the possibility of killing insects

using oregano as an insecticide. The researchers believe that the findings of the

study will benefit the following:

To the Students. To have knowledge of how oregano can kill insects.

The students will also learn on how to make their own oregano as insecticides.

Also, this paper would guide them in their future research.

To the Home Owners. To have a piece of knowledge of how to make

oregano as an insecticide that is cheaper than the commercial products that

usually sell in the market.

To the Farmers. Farmers can use oregano as an insecticide to repel pests

and protect their crops without using harmful synthetic chemicals. Additionally,

they may profit from selling or commercializing their oregano harvest.

To the Word Health Organization. To make the Insecticides out of

oregano as an alternative product in killing insects to put out in the market.

To the Future Researchers. To expand their understanding of the

practicality, effectiveness, and safety of utilizing oregano as an alternative

insecticide, offering sustainable and environmentally friendly pest management

solutions that can reduce the ecological impact of conventional chemical

pesticides and benefit agriculture, public health, and the environment.
