November 2023

The Bard Gary Schneider, Editor

From the
President
Hello Everyone!

Our next meeting is Monday, November 6, 2023 at 7:00pm. We look forward to seeing more of a turnout in the crowd. If
you’re free on Monday, in the words of the late Bob Barker, “Come on Down!” We will be discussing the upcoming
fundraiser and future group activities.

See the attached Minutes and Agenda that Carol Ann put together for us. Thank you Carol Ann!

Please mark down Sunday, December 10th for our annual Christmas party. 12 noon until about 4pm. Beer, soda, and food
will be provided. Bring a dessert to pass if you’d like. A $5 donation is encouraged to help defray costs.

As the holiday season is approaching, and the leaves are falling, take the time to reflect on your year so far. Did you get to do
the majority of everything on your fun list, and your to-do list? What else do you want to get done before the end of the
year? Remember to prioritize family, friends, and making memories. Share laughs. Take pictures. Enjoy life. Remember, one
day there won’t be a tomorrow.

Some sombering statistics: Year to date there have been a total of 99 line of duty deaths. Of those, 4 are from Wisconsin.
The average age is 42, an average tour of duty is 13 years and 9 months. A total of 20 K9’d have also died.

Remain vigilant. Stay safe.

Thank you,

Kimberlee Miswald
President

For those that live outside of the Milwaukee area or do not follow Milwaukee politics, there is a State
Representative and Milwaukee County Supervisor, Ryan Clancy, who does not care for law enforcement. Clancy
goes unchecked by the local media and is allowed to lie or lie through omission about law enforcement activity that
is publicized. He often rants about what a terrible profession we have chosen, and that we do nothing to promote
public safety in our communities. Recently, our very own Bob Donovan took Clancy to task on statements he made
about our profession. It’s the editor’s opinion that more politicians elect not to call Clancy out over his ignorance,
because he is a back-bencher politician whose great accomplishment is getting reelected, and they just don’t want to
deal with his disparagement of law enforcement. However, Bob is a great friend to law enforcement. There are three
generations of cops in the Donovan family, and he used his position and standing in the community to defend us.
Below is a link to an article Bob wrote in Wisconsin Right Now on October 10, 2023 regarding statements made by
Clancy.

Unfortunately, law enforcement suicides are on the rise. In the Milwaukee area, we have a very active Police
Officer Support Team. The P.O.S.T. phone line is a 24 hour a day, confidential line with voicemail capabilities.
Only the P.O.S.T. Board can access the voicemail and email. Neither the Milwaukee Police Command Staff, its
Supervisors, nor any other employee has access. Established by Milwaukee Police Officers in 1986, POST serves
ALL members of the Law Enforcement Community, officers returning from or in active Military duty, and their
families, regardless jurisdiction or department.

The Milwaukee Fire and Police Pipes and Drums are always recruiting new members. If you have time,
talent and patience, consider checking them out. Classes meet on Tuesdays at 6:60 p.m. and end no later
than 7:30 p.m.

The Bard is the official publication of the EMERALD SOCIETY of WISCONSIN P.O. Box 24, Milwaukee
WI 53201-0024 and is published as often as we have something important to say. Dues are $25.00 per year.
First year dues are waived for any recruit, cadet or student enrolled in a state-certified or federal basic law
enforcement program.
