DESIGN REPORT FOR CONTROL ROOM

1 GENERAL
1.1 SCOPE
The scope of this design basis report (DBR) is intended to cover the design of Main Control Room (MCR) and its
foundations.

This document covers the general description of structural framing system, applicable design codes and standards,
specific design criteria, design loads and combinations, design methodology and characteristics of construction
materials to be adopted for the project.

This DBR has been developed on the basis of the relevant parts of the technical specification and subsequent
technical discussions with the client. In absence of any particular aspect of structural design of this project’s
components in this DBR, relevant Indian standards will be followed. The requirements that have not been listed
here but are otherwise required to complete the work shall be as per NIT specifications.

3 LOADS AND LOAD COMBINATIONS

3.1 DEAD LOADS

i) Weight of the materials used in the construction will be considered as follows:

a. RCC members : 25.0 kN/m³
b. Plain concrete members : 24.0 kN/m³
c. Soil : 18.0 kN/m³
d. Water : 10.0 kN/m³
ii) Dead loads per unit area

3.2 IMPOSED LOADS

a. Roof Load : 0.75 kN/m²

3.3 WIND LOADS

The structure shall be designed for wind forces in accordance with IS:875 (part-3) and as specified in this
document. The evaluation of the design wind speed and pressure will be made on the basis of the following
parameters:
Basic wind speed = 50 m/s

Probability factor (Risk coefficient), k1 = 1.0

Taken from the below table of IS 875 part 3

ISSUE: R0
DESIGN REPORT FOR CONTROL ROOM

Terrain category = 2

Structure classification based on structure = Class B

Terrain, height and structure size based factor, k2 = 1.00,

Taken from the below table of IS 875 Part 3,

Topography factor, k3 = 1

Importance factor for cyclonic region, k4 = 1.15

The wind analysis shall consider the wind direction relative to the structure and both external and internal
pressure as applied to the windward and leeward sides of the structure.

3.4 EARTHQUAKE LOADS

The seismic coefficients based on the geographical and structural parameters are considered as follows:

a. Seismic zone : Zone V

b. Zone factor : 0.36
c. Importance factor: 1.0
d. Response reduction factor : 5.0
e. Soil type : II

DESIGN REPORT FOR CONTROL ROOM

4 DESIGN METHODOLOGY
3D space frame analysis using STAAD.Pro, which utilizes finite element technique to carry out the analysis,
is employed. The advanced solver processes the member and element properties, based on load combinations
and support conditions to arrive at the stiffness and load matrices. The solver further uses matrix method to
determine the nodal displacements, member forces/stresses, element forces/stresses and support reactions,
which will be further utilized in the design of the structural members. However, the design of the elements will
be carried out either manually or by standardized excel sheets or in house software packages or using STAAD
Pro software design modules.

4.1 GENERAL
The structure is planned to be steel frame structure. The building consists of Ground floor only with min. floor
heights of 3.6m. Foundations shall be isolated Pad footings based on site requirement.

4.2 MATERIALS
Concrete Grade: M25

Reinforcement Steel: Steel reinforcement shall be High Strength Deformed Bars of grade Fe-500D of TMT
Type conforming to IS: 1786-2008

Nominal cover to reinforcement:

1. Footing : 50 mm
2. Pedestal : 40 mm
3. Beams : 25 mm
4. Slabs : 15 mm

4.3 DESIGN OF STRUCTURAL MEMBERS

The member forces and support reactions as arrived through the analysis are utilized in the design of
structural members as per IS 800: 2007. All designs will be carried out using the limit state method of
design.

As per this method, the structure will be designed for all possible limit states of collapse and
serviceability mentioned in clause 3.6.

Foundation: The foundations are designed for support reactions of all un-factored loads for
corresponding partial factors of safety for fixed condition. In-house programs are used for the design.

Columns: Design results from STAAD design modules for fixed supports at foundation level for the
severest case among the load combinations.

ISSUE: R0
DESIGN REPORT FOR CONTROL ROOM

Beams: Design results from STAAD design modules for the severest case among the load
combinations. Beams are grouped according to span, cross section and support conditions.

Slabs: Slabs are designed as slab on grade as per the IS-456: 2000 for DL+LL. In-house programs are
used for the design.
