Abstract

This study specifically concerned about building a facility with services that cater to elderly people's needs

and comfort. The objective of this study was to analyze the importance of healthcare facilities for elderly

people who seek comfort and safety services in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. An individual questionnaire survey

was used to assess its importance and elder preference in terms of healthcare facilities services. The

research also tackles issues regarding the determinants of why some of our elder's needs were neglected

by their own family. Some social concerns including education, unemployment, and financial constraints,

lack awareness regarding their emotional and physical needs, were in some ways the reason they need

healthcare assistance outside their home. The project also discusses professional and non-professional

services for the elderly and how this facility supports its services which mainly focuses on the benefits of

its occupants. It was designed to assist older adults' needs in short and long-term stays. It offers an

entertainment facility promoting both aspects of the health and emotional well-being of the elderly and

medical support that treats any age-related illnesses. Furthermore, it is a fact that the elderly preference

for family care and comforts is beneficial for them, however, healthcare services in relation to their health

conditions are secured due to its proper management. Trained staff can assess their safety. And they can

help their family who has difficulties in managing their time over their work. Likewise, the elderly usually

experiences the feeling of loneliness and depression when nobody is around, with the help of this project,

helps them build a connection towards others through socialization because aging adults stay healthy with

social interaction.

Preface

“To forget the elderly is to ignore the wisdom of the years “(Donald Laird)

The meaning behind this quote is that the elderly should be valued, their experience should be a

lesson we learn from. We should understand the significance of their being.

Limitations

This study is limited to identify a good location that meet the criteria in terms of convenience and

age-friendly environment for the target occupants. It is however stated that there is no yet elderly

home resort exist in the region. No locals or regional studies support this project.

Project Outline

The project is designing a healthcare facility like home and medical care resort that caters the needs

and comforts of elderly people in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It focuses mainly about the safety, health,

and well-being of every elders in the region.

This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is all about the framework of the project

as a basis of the synopsis of the research. It compromises the project statement, rational of the

study, client profile, who are the target audience and the site of the analysis. The second chapter

talks about the literature review which is an important part of the research that explains the major

and minor study. It contains a profile of information allowing to concede remarkable speculations,

strategies, and holes in the said research. The literature review helps the project through different

assortment of academic’s opinions and discoveries. The third chapter in the thesis is the research

methodology. This is the process of gathering data and information related to the selected topic in

the said thesis from the community that helps realizing the most important points cited by the

concerned respondents. The fourth chapter in the thesis is the precedent studies. This pattern of

the studies talks about the literature review chapter by analyzing different related projects with

similar functions internationally, regionally, and locally. The fifth and the last chapter of the thesis

discuss the details of the interiors. It is the programing part of the thesis comprises a matrix and

program table, a relationship diagram, a finish schedule, and the Saudi Building Code.

Chapter 1: Synopsis of Research Programming Document

Project statement

The project is all about a resort that caters to the needs and comfort of elderly people in the

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The aim of the resort is to contribute to raising the quality of the life of

the elderly and keeping them as active and productive members of society. The health care resort

offers a variety of professional medical assistance either short-term or long-term care. A facility

that attracts those elders needing rest due to its convenience, attractive and healthful environment.

Research Question

• How does the elderly resorts contribute to the betterment of the society in line with KSA's

VISION 2030? • How may the design of the resort contribute to providing optimum comfort to the

residents?

• What is the importance of elderly home medical care services in our society?

• What are the social determinants of health of the elders?

• How may this facility affect the well-being of the elderly and its role to the community?

Research Objectives

• To increase awareness of the public about the needs and behavior of elderly people at home.

• Catering the needs of the elderly through a well-designed facility.

RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 16

• To help address elderly people's issue regarding their health.

• To give assistance to the elderly in maintaining their healthy lifestyle.

• To help enhance the quality of health and medical care of elderly people in Saudi Arabia.

Project Rational

The facility will not only focus on health of elderly individuals as well as entertainment and social

activities. In terms of health services, there are medical treatment among elders who suffers serious

illnesses like diabetes, osteoarthritis, hypertension, pulmonary and other chronic and acute

diseases that needs continuous monitoring. According to statistics, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

follows the global increase in aging population. Elderly population of those 60 above is projected

to increase 3 percent in 2010 and 9.5 percent and 18.4 percent in 2035 to 2050. From a health

perspective, the elderly population has specific health and social issues that affect them directly.

This change can dramatically impact their quality of life (Anderson, 2010, Yacht et al). Through

this resort, it enables to meet KSA’s Vision regarding healthcare services to improve elderly day

to day lifestyle. To promote their health and well-being. In addition to, it also responses young

generation awareness regarding the changing behavioral patterns in elderly people at home and the

lack of understanding their needs and worries. In relation to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Vision

2030, the government highlighted Vision 2030 will contribute to "healthy lives and promote well-

being for all ages". The Vision encourages the state to play a renewed role and must have a

necessary institutional environment in sustaining capacity resources and interaction among groups

for realizing constructive roles and function.

RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 17

Target Audience

The resort is designed to help elderly people from 60 years above in both genders with declining

health to give peace of mind that all their future needs were covered. In K.S.A, retirement age is

60 in accordance with their laws and regulations governing their workforce based on the Hijri

Calendar. Saudi families have long prided themselves on taking care of the elderly, however, when

extended families find themselves in trouble, divorce, unemployed, or their excessive reliance on

social media become more isolated tends to have less time to care for family members who need

help the most.

Site Analysis

The project is in Palestine Road, Marriott hotels Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The location itself is the

main advantage of the facility because it is situated at the center of the district where it can provide

easy access to different places. Its proximity to other built spaces like shopping areas or downtown

makes it more convenient for the family members to visit their loved ones. The visibility of the

building to its location from different streets and intersection makes it more noticeable and attracts

everyone's interest to visit and inquire about their services especially those who really in needs of

it. The location makes the facility more impressive because the exterior built way different from

its neighborhood buildings.

Client Profile

Founded: December 14, 1950

Jurisdiction: Saudi Arabia

Agency executive: Tawfig AlRabiah, (Minister of Health)

The Ministry of Health in pursuance of the Vision 2030 regarding healthcare services are the

possible clients of this facility. The government highlighted that the public sector would engage in

promotion of preventive care and advising people to utilize primary healthcare. This will broaden

assimilation between the health and social sector. Vision 2030 has prioritized the private sector

and therefore the government is expecting and anticipating more investment here (Role of Vision

2030 in Re-Vitalizing the Health Sector). The government programs and policies help to provide

specific health care and comfort to the elders at low cost. This space answers the needs of medical

and comfort facilities that caters to the elders' needs in our region and faces the challenges of lack

of facilities in terms of health care providers.

Conclusion

This project aims to provide dwellings to the elderly people in Jeddah Saudi Arabia that deliver

better services in terms of their health, needs, and comfort. Two ways of services helping elder

people, and entertainment spaces both indoors and outdoors that help maintain their physical and

emotional well-being, and medical care facilities that cater to their age-related conditions or

chronic diseases. Elderly people from 60 years old above both sexes are the main target of this

facility. People who keep nurturing their good lifestyle, a process of treatment from any chronic

illnesses. At this age, older adults tend to be more vulnerable about their family members' care and

attention. They are longing for affection, for some reason family members might neglect. Others

might busy with their studies, jobs, or it is because they do not comprehend their feelings, tend to

be depressed. At this point, a facility like this home care medical center plays it is a vital role in

providing all the needs of the elderly and somehow also beneficial to the whole household as well.

A facility that attends to both physical, emotional, and illness issues of the elders. Providing a long

and short-term stay facilitates by trained staff who on the other hand treats them as a family. Some

indoor and outdoor spaces were available for maintaining their well-being, enhance social

interaction and self-reliance, factors that help them developed their good lifestyle. Also, this

project addresses the needs of healthcare facilities in our country, exemplary providing service that

particularly address elderly needs, safety, and comfort.

Chapter 2: Literature Review

This study explains the outcome results of the minor and major study of the topic elderly medical

care and comforts. The minor study details the general information about the importance and

beneficial of a medical and entertainment facility that caters our elderly needs. It is clearly

elaborated that as its population increases there is a higher demand for this health care services.
RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 22

The major study conforms about the design of the resort safety and modification which meet

elderly comforts. It comprises its circulation, flooring materials, color, lighting, function and

flows, furniture’s, and others.

Minor Literature Review

Elderly people make much heavier demands on health and social services from young adults. As

a result, elderly population of those aged 60 years above is projected to increase (World Health

Organization, 2002, Bloom et al., 2010). In the Article, Healthcare of Elderly: Determinants,

Needs, and Services by Saurabh Ram Bihal, Prateek Saurabh and Jagadesh Ramaswamy, clarifies

that aging as a natural process its challenges and difficulties can be avoided through the provision

of quality assured health care that requires approach and strategy. Prevention and control of elderly

health problems necessitates a multifaceted approach incorporating active collaboration of health,

social welfare, urban or rural development sectors like this home and medical care resort. It has

been estimated It by the “World Health Organization (2002), Bloom et al, (2010)” that people aged

60 above increase its population living in developed countries which already one of the burdens in

terms of health. Elderly people have a higher prevalence of chronic diseases. This article also states

that the determinants are social concerns like poor knowledge or awareness of their behavior and

the risk factor when leaving them isolated without any physical support in daily activities,

nutritional requirements, and psycho-emotional concern like financial constraints. While the

article, Aging Wejdan Felmban, PhD, 2016, talks about the transition within Saudi Arabia are

evident in health care services are 65 years above. An Exploratory Study of Contemporary Older

Persons View about Daily Life, Health, and the Experience of Aging by Nancy J. Karlin, PhD,

Joyce Weil, PhD, and Wejdan Felmban, PhD, 2016, talks about the transition within Saudi Arabia

are evident in health care services. To prepare the country for this transition it sought to measure
RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 23

current experiences of Saudi elders and understand their issues and those essential to the aging

process. Growth of the elder population in Saudi Arabia is predicted to have direct impact on health

care services availability. In relation to, the United Nations (2014) (Khraif et al., 2015) predicts

the continued growth of an elder population up to 18.4% of its total population in 2050. With this

increase of elder's population, there is a higher interest in examining Saudi elders' own perception

of aging. According to Shammari et al., (200), describes the role of elders as a society in "Appraisal

of Critical, Psychosocial, and Environmental Health of Elderly in Saudi Arabia, predicts changes

in family caregiving trends and impact on the health system. It highlights the effects of work and

education. In Saudi Arabia, education has been referred to as the main pillar of human development

(Ministry of Economy and Planning, 2014 p. 138). Saudis want to gain higher education and use

this knowledge or education gained in employment outside home creating a lesser availability of

taking care of the elders. Another thing is economic difficulties and limited access to health

services were two of the biggest problems. The government has encouraged medical companies

and private individuals to invest in the city to improve health care delivery. As an evidence, Al-

Shahri (2019) stated that although hospitals exist and are positively viewed within the Arab world,

nursing homes, private medical institutions like this home and medical comfort resorts are

extremely rare. Both articles analysis claims that elders acknowledge a preference for family care

and recognize family support as the preferred method of support. However, due to some social

issues involving family absences, financial constraints, lack of awareness in providing their needs

and learning their behavior, economic issues, Abyad (2004) indicates that specialized training with

a focus on aging is needed to cope up with the challenge. Skilled set of health care professionals

for the elders must recognize. To summarize, provision of quality assured health care services for

the elderly population is a challenge that requires joint approach and strategies. The book, How to
RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 24

Design for Senior Citizen (60) by Flavia Ranieri elaborates that design helps bring a better quality

of life so that elderly people can continue to live the present moment in the best possible way. In

this source, designing for the elderly is complex. There are two main concerns to be considered,

emotional and physical safety. Article 27 and 31 of the Basic Laws of Saudi Arabia specify the

rights of elderly to proper health care and encouraging individuals to commit humanitarian act to

help others (Saudi embassy basic law). Every individual has the right to have decent housing and

proper care including the elderly. The author indicates, in planning and designing a healthcare and

entertainment facility, it should have uniform lighting with no shadows area but extra lights in

work or outdoor area, anti-slipping floors, wide corridors that gives enough circulation like

wheelchairs in the medical area and people walking side by side in entertainment facility, and

passage free of obstacle like too many accents of furniture’s. It is true that some diseases are

common to all, but elders have different needs to attend to. According to these sources, the logical

place to carry rehabilitation of the old people is in their home, however, rehabilitation facilities

like this resort, provided it is equipped and well-organized, with its full range of structured

approach is beneficial in terms of improved medical and functional outcome. All these sources

simplify that family and home is the best place for the elderly to rehabilitate emotionally, but they

are benefited in improving their health and well-being through this facility which caters their needs

and comfort. This resort should cater two major functions not only in terms of physical

comfortability but as well as with elders' emotional being. Therefore, there is a particular need of

establishing regulated and well-organized facilities that provide care and comfort for the elders

while addressing our society's essential challenge in terms of health. Designing a facility like this

resort has a significant impact on elderly performance, safety, and health.

Major Literature Review

HOME AND MEDICAL CARE COMFORTS FOR THE ELDERLY INTERIOR DESIGN

There are two functions in this project: a health resort and entertainment facility, promoting both

aspects of health and well-being. Its aim is to increase or maintain personal health care, activity

and working ability. In planning, the medical and entertainment spaces its focus was on creating a

comfortable atmosphere for the elderly. There is a vision for the space to optimize workflow and

satisfaction for all users while providing a nurturing healing health care environment. According

to the book chapter, Healthy Environments, Healing, Spaces, Practices and Directions in Health,

Planning and Design by Timothy Beatles, Carla Jones, and Reuben Rain in 2018, published by

University of Virginia Press, it tells that the design and planning of the resort has a profound impact

on the lives of occupants and the possibilities of a meaningful and flourishing lives. This means

that the design consideration needs to be considered to enhance wellness of the elderly. Many

factors can be monitored and enhanced through its layout and functions. Design should if not

minimize human error and harm to the patients. The book chapter: Home-Care Home Reflections

on the Differentiation of Space in Living and Care Setting by Isabel Atzel and Anamaria Depner

pp. 265-283 (18 pages), the author deeply emphasized that care needs a place to be provided. It is

a fact that elderly prefer their family members to take care of them, however, due to some social

factors such as financial constraints, work history, education, and living arrangement that affects

the availability of the presence of the family members, their needs and care turn to be neglected.

It is clearly the author suggesting that facility where everyone can be benefited and receive

appropriate care. A design space setup according to their personal needs. For the elderly, a specific

environment should be created that is conducive to their well-being. There is significant correlation

between age and activities of daily life off the elderly's such as anxiety loneliness and lifestyle.
RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 26

This means got older adults are more likely to suffer health and emotional problems then R their

middle age. the main factor of con tributing to qualify of life decline for elders were chronic

diseases, falls and psycho-emotional concern. Chronic health impairment and falls will mark a

mobility for the elderly is somehow triggers their emotions as an aging consequence. According

to the author Samira Al Senany and Amer Al Saif of the article Assessment of Physical Health

Status and Quality of Life among Saudi Older Adults, elderly lifestyle and behavioral changes

should be promoted through healthcare and community-based programs that truly support their

needs in terms of care medically and emotionally. Other sources say, according to Professor

Anastasia Loukaitou - Sideres of Urban Planning of the University of California, that parks are

used by the elders for exercising, however, although culture does play a role, it is the location,

design, and amenities that most influence elderly people. Often adults feel not welcome in parks.

They need exercise too to facilitate their physiological needs. It is through designing this

entertainment resort that they create confidence in exercising.

Space Planning

Combines creative concepts based on a harmonious exchange of health and nature, the resort

emphasized the reference of natural environment and use of natural materials. Interior space flows

out the surrounding park updated with new seating areas. The exterior and interior of the resort

represents the relationship between medicine and nature. The space should be large, with plenty

of natural lighting and allows equipment to move and emphasized elders’ movements that promote

engagement and activity. According to the Chaplain Architecture (Jerry Smith, 2007) talks about

the visionary concepts planning and design, create a balance between the functional requirements

of the facility and need to contribute for the human and aesthetic aspects of the environment.
RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 27

Flooring Materials

The safety and convenience of the elderly should be a priority when it comes to choosing an ideal

flooring. It should be subject to standard and range of functional and other performance criteria,

including cleaning requirements, aesthetic, and psychological consideration. “Australasia Health

Facility Guidelines Part B, and Stanford Components”. The functional performance of the flooring

should match the user’s requirements. This definition also covers not only the physical or

functional performances but also the healing or working environment, like acoustic control, color,

texture, and comfort. Floors have a property of smoothness, slip resistance, fire hazard properties,

and dirt control for some active activities, rubber floors are suitable due to its durability and safety,

while linoleum vinyl is good for the medical area to avoid movement disruption and other

equipment’s can easily move. All materials should be easily clean and allow elders to move freely

away from any obstacle because walking improves mobility and decreasing the likelihood of

physical disabilities, more movement-driven design.

Safety

In relation to skip, trips and falls, elders are influenced by their cognitive senses, motor skills,

unnoticed source of contamination or even unfamiliarity with the environment and distraction. The

published data for wood and concrete products, with or without carpeted surface, indicates a

relationship between injury reduction and impact absorption. “Age and Ageing Vol 33 No. 3 -

British Geriatrics Society” (2004). Materials should facilitate the level of cleaning required.

Color and Pattern

Provide an interior environment that assists the intended outcome like healing and home-like stress

reduction. Pale colors reflect light. The color and pattern for medical facilities and entertainment

services areas are different. Sharp visual contrast is required in the medical area to easily recover
RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 28

even small, dropped items like needles. The entertainment area needs to conform with the level of

activities and its function. Inappropriate floor patterning can create a risk for the elders causing

disorientation and dizziness. “Age and Ageing Vol 33 No 3 British Geriatrics Society”, (2004).

Lighting

According to sources, Code Plus Physical Design Components for an Elder Friendly Hospital,

Second Edition (2015), published by Fraser, consistent ambient lighting with less shadow can help

elders distinguish objects and is a vital design feature. Minimizing glare especially on flooring

surfaces to reduce falls. For better sleep, light sources in medical areas should be controlled by

bedded patients of families allowing them to create a dark calming environment during rest time

day and night.

Circulation

Handrails and strategically placed seating allow for rest stop should be provided in the whole

facility. There is signage that needs to feature larger lettering for the elders in the entertainment

area and other functions of the resort, for them to easily recognize. Elders with poor insight or

visual impairment could easily comprehend. This also should be properly mocked up and tested

with elders to clarity and simplicity before installation.

Furniture

To guarantee the best functional and comfortable solutions for the elders, the combination of style

and functionality seats should emerge comfortability into a mixed setting and complement other

process. Chairs and tables should be flexible. Furniture posture is important, not only it is

durability, social interaction, and self-reliance.

Function and Flow

Entertainment facilities prioritize independent access to outdoor space to promote their well-being

and reduce pressure. The design of the medical facility creates a hospitality driven space that is

easy to navigate. Both areas are infused with natural lights filled with soft comfortable seating and

eye-catching art.

Décor

The interior emphasized natural surfaces including slate, stone and rubber floors and decors also

focus on arts about healing, nature. All materials should be attributed to safety.

Family Support or Seating (Medical Area)

Many elders are accompanied by their families during medication, family seating areas ideally

with windows located in this unit are more useful than remote family waiting areas. These spaces

can also serve as areas of respite when family members need a short break.

Conclusion

The results highlighted that patients and health care staff satisfaction is also related to the

physical environment of the facility. The actual architectural design of the resort, its materials

and spaces, rooms, treatment, and equipment must conform and focus on patient’s safety and

comforts. All spaces must be functional and flexible to be able to deliver safe care assistance.

facility should find comfort, accessibility, and safety because the well-being of the elderly is

related to their comforts.

Chapter 3 Research Methodology

This report covers a wide range of public opinions that possesses very basic insights about the

importance of healthcare services to the elders. To raise concern and urgency, information about

health care services link to the public's personal connection. The method of questionnaire survey

was used. The focus of the present paper is mainly a descriptive presentation of the data gathered

regarding the elderly's comfort and safety. The questionnaire survey was designed to assess the

validity and reliability of the respondent’s statement. Information about the study design, research

objectives are extracted for comparison and integration. Combining all data shows the expectations

of elderly people related to their well-being and quality of life. The study population comprised a

great number of respondents from aged 20 to 49 majority of it are females who completed

individual questionnaires. Most respondents are still living with their parents and in good health.

All respondents are fully aware of their own family members' health status. Prior to the survey

questionnaire, the private space has an impact on the sense of home. Some elderly people prefer

to have their own space for they want to protect both privacy and a sense of belongings. In addition

to examining the values that underline the concern of this home and medical care comfort resort,

the modern style of built environment raised from the other design style. On the other hand, some

other aspects of the public space were important, the green environment was appreciated because

in some cases the view of nature was attractive and pretty. As a result, the physical environment

of the resort has an impact in improving the quality of life of elders and at the same time can

improve its sense of home. People prefer an atmosphere of home like a home care setting. This is

because, the sense of home care settings influenced by the sense of acknowledgment, preservation

of one's habit and values, social factors, and the built environment such as private space and the

outdoors. Furthermore, it is also shown that elders' independence and individuality influenced by

the quality of care and facilities. The environmental modifications appear to be a way to improve

the quality of life on residential home care resorts for the elders. This literature review explores

the factor structure of elderly satisfaction with home care services and determines the quality of

life and facility characteristics that benefit people's satisfaction. It was recognizing that older

people access the support they needed from a wide range of independent and voluntary sector

services like home care medical comforts resorts. In addition, the survey indicates that there had

been increasing awareness of the elderly about the impact, efficiency, and effectiveness of the

available services.

Export

This research method was designed to examine the multiple and evolving roles of caregivers, their

dynamic nature, and the scope of their responsibilities towards the elders. The chapter reviews an

extensive literature on caregiving adults. The methodology used was an individual interview by

caregivers from health and medical centers who work in an integrated way to provide care for the

elders. The collected data from the interviewee explore their experiences of care and the ways in

which integration had been developed. As a result, discussion with the caregiver identified several

key issues such as, the daily tasks of taking care of an elderly person can be challenging, their

crucial role in maintaining their health and safety and the needs of assistance to health providers

like professional medical physicians. As per the interview respondents stated, caregivers’ duties

are wide-ranging. They often play an integral role in arranging medical visits coordinating with

the physicians. It is their role to help elders with their daily activities like personal care, shopping,

preparing their food as well as to provide companionship. A navigator and communicator. They
RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 32

navigate the healthcare system by communicating to the health providers regarding patients'

conditions. They do not perform medical care, instead, caregivers have personal touch. Close ties

were developed with those in their care as they help them in their day to day needs that an elder

might not be able to do on their way any longer. Someone whom elders can rely on for matters of

their care as well as emotional issues. The main providers of older people's personal care services.

In terms of transitional care, they help ensure critical information is transmitted correctly to health

providers and informs symptoms or problems arise. Furthermore, they arrange for modification to

elders to prevent injuries. She is responsible for ensuring continuity of care to the elder whatever

that entails. They should be knowledgeable about the needs of elderly, services in the community

and have identified daily procedures that can be adjusted to meet the needs in a disaster. And a

caregiver must have the qualifications and personality to take care for someone. They must be

patient, empathetic, dependable, and flexible. The center was highly recommended by the

caregiver for the elders to visit because taking care of the elder needs in line with their health

requires a set of skills and often needs special training and professional assistance. For her, it is a

safe place to provide significant assistance and to ensure their safety. This study identifies priority

areas for action based on the results of the interview; identification, assessment, support, and roles

of caregivers in the delivery of care are important, to determine what role they can and cannot

accomplish, how to appropriately engage them as team members in care and treatment. In overall,

the interview ended up with the conclusion that caregivers are essential pillars for ensuring and

maintaining the care of frail elderly and health providers like home/resort medical care centers

need to collaborate to provide support to assure that patients/ elderly health conditions are secured.

Non-expert

These paper reports findings concluded to explore the benefits of the elderly resort/home medical

center, their needs, and satisfaction. This literature review was designed to support and expand the

knowledge by providing a foundation for inquiry and analysis that provides guidance for human

factors intervention in-home/resort medical centers. An individual interview was used. The results

of the home resort medical care survey provide detailed information about the characteristics of

the center, elders' insights, and expectations about what the center should be. The interview

respondents are predominantly elders living with their families. The interviewee's insights tackle

several issues about this center, such as medication management, their health conditions,

accessibility to the center, their emotional and independence. Medical care and its supervision need

special attention. If the medication is not prescribed or taken correctly the results can be life-

threatening. To reduce medical errors skilled nurses or staff are primarily needed. In some ways,

without these skilled staff, elders have a difficulty in managing their own medicine. They are not

only providing treatments and management but also require assistance for the elderly's comfort. In

this aspect, elders prefer someone who is warm and caring, a quality that triggers their emotions

because they want to feel belong as a family, not a patient. It is a fact that adults prefer their home

to stay and get treated but they do really understand the issues concerning their welfare in visiting

such centers, not only for them but for their family too. This resort/home and medical center have

the potential to attend and manage age-related health conditions of the elderly. Another thing,

implementation of programs and events can help reduce elders' anxiety and stress. It has been

suggested that they prefer to stay in a center that has a huge potential to allow greater freedom and

the ability to mingle with other people. It is important to understand the unique needs of elderly

people in evaluating this center as they are the most consumer of such care. Efforts should conclude
RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 34

with the center management promoting transportation options among elders. Family members

might too busy that they might not be able to attend to their elder needs. The availability of reliable

transportation impacts an elderly ability to access appropriate and well-coordinated centers. As an

interviewee suggested, the center should help patients to access readily available care and support

them to manage their care. Furthermore, it was recognized by this study that the elderly access

support needed from a wide range of independent and voluntary sector services like resort home

medical center. Lastly, the assessment indicated that older adults' needs may be categorized as

medical treatment, management, and personal care assistance.

Conclusion

Gathering data through conducting a wide range of individual surveys and interviews aims to

identify everyone's opinion about the benefits, expectations of the specific targets for this facility.

The method of a survey questionnaire distributed to every individual from 20 to 49 years old, both

genders, giving their opinions about their health, possible factors of putting their elders to

healthcare facilities. Women are the predominant respondent. As a result, due to some chronic

illnesses suffered by their elders, a home care medical comforts resort is a big help to lessen every

family's burden regarding attending elders' needs, especially their health. Furthermore, providing

care and protection for the elders is not possible because of some work or education priorities. All

of us require assistance as soon as we reach old age, however, members of the family might not

be able to fill the needs. Detailed information for their satisfaction and welfare came across after

examining their response. It is indeed proper administering of their medicine somehow affected

without skilled staff monitoring them. And the survey results highlighted that the elderly emotions

being affected without interaction among families. Everyone says they prefer family or home to

take care of them but at some point, to help families, uplift all this burden, facilities like this home
RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 35

medical resort can address all these issues. The assessment highlighted that families must need to

understand their elder's needs and comfort by ensuring their good health, physically, emotionally,

and medically. A life free from worries and anxiety, full of comfort and assistance is the

respondent's main concern.

Chapter 4: President study

The focus of this chapter is to analyze the different related projects that function internationally,

regionally, and locally. Analyzing all these case studies proposes a general framework of

comparing project performances, the materials used, the texture of every space, ways of providing

natural and artificial lights, and its site. All their methods, types of design are clearly defined and

come in different shapes and sizes which explains their own character. The analysis revealed the

evaluation and comparison of the project's performances which help us in determining its

construction quality and efficiency.

Brief: Based on the description provided by the architect, this two-floor nursing home was a rise

in an urban city of the region particularly on the ground of Hummel Kaserne barracks. The nursing

home was filled in an object of square-shaped objects where the small and complex shapes work

together with the large simple one. This serves as the separation of every part of the living spaces

into eight housing communities. Each floor consists of four living spaces grouped as a small

housing area that extends from the side of the first floor to the second floor which is partly covered

by a roof terrace. In this open area, there is a straight line about which formed a geometric shape

of rectangle bed gardens that helps residents stimulate their physical and mental health. further

Windows are more than just opening in the wall that helps occupants capture the outdoors views

and provides natural lights as a source of healthy living. The residents may express a desire to go

outside the facility, having the view itself is necessary. The relevance of this study helps to reinvent

my interiors by using a view as an inspiration, a physical environment that makes activities

It also gives an idea about the profound needs of the city in restoring a safe and comfortable place

for the elderly. The facility was obviously neglected, and the exterior deteriorated. Both External

and internal finishing are not in good shape. The building should be inspected and replaced with a

new one if not renovated. Maximize natural light by using large glass framed doors and windows

instead of metal. This way, natural light gives the impression of a small space into a large one.

Install lights to brighten up the kitchen. Use walls that serve as a partition between kitchen and

bathroom and paint the walls in the bathroom in a neutral tone to add lights. In the bedroom, use

minimalist furniture to provide a small space for other purposes. With this regard, this study helps

get an idea of how we can address the safety and comfortability of elderly people living in a small

living space.

Conclusion

These studies provide insights to understand and learn helpful ideas about the prospective projects

if there are specific areas to focus on such as its spaces, lighting, furniture. Comparing perceptions

and practices of construction is a great help in measuring performance and most of all in choosing

the most practical consideration of project delivery methods. It is a tool taking into consideration

their differences and similarities of function for identifying their characteristics.

Chapter 5: Details for Interiors

Creating a good integration of the interior of the different listed functions of spaces needs special

attention. These elderly home and medical care resort interiors have a great impact on the

patient's recovery and experience. Creating a space that gives a sense of place to its occupants

includes its adjacent surroundings. There is a balance between form and function. All spaces

blend sophistication and design, floors display resistance to mechanical damage due to

continuous movement. Arranging furniture to maximize the space which is also important for every

functional space zoning design and works well all together. Uncluttered and restful space creates

the feeling of relaxation and comfort which is the main aim of building this facility. Looking deeply

at the connection of every space, getting rid of all destructive barriers to make every space feel

larger while allowing other elements like lights with the use of glass to flow more naturally all over

the space. Lighting fixtures are stunning and compliment the modern minimalist vibrant interiors.

The beauty and comfortability of the resort attract the elderly to visit such a place. Using wood

materials showcase elegance and sophistication. The color scheme provides visual stimulation

and the color palette blend together. Wooden chairs or other elements like ceiling, furniture color

contrast give an impressive look and make the ambiance lively. Also, creating a space that goes

beyond its first impression, the lobby, corridors, ceiling, and walls, gives the sense of identity due

to its balanced look.

Caregiver Interview

Hello, I am delighted to be interviewing you today as your expertise in the field this interview will

support my project immensely

1. Could you please tell me briefly about yourself?

Hi, my name is Rohana, I am a caregiver, originally from the Philippines.

RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 77

2. How long have you been in Jeddah and working in the position you are currently in?

I am nearly 8 years in Jeddah but 3 years as a caregiver

3. Can you tell me about the facilities in the center?

Provide a wide range of health and personal care services, like medical care, nursing care, 24-hour

supervision, three meals a day, and assistance with everyday activities. Rehabilitation services,

such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

4. What are the requirements of the patients?

Qualifying for nursing home care generally depends on your state’s assessment test, it requires

some guidelines to follow, it offers flexibility and does not enforce standardized tests.

Physician’s order for admission to a s illed nursing facility - This order is like writing out a

prescription. A doctor needs to confirm the patient needs to enter a nursing home for care.

Physician’s order for medications and treatment - Your loved ones will have a new physician and

caregivers at the nursing home. To provide care, they will need orders from a primary care

physician or hospital staff.

Medical history and physical - The nursing home’s attending physicians need up-to-date

information about your loved one. The primary care physician should perform a physical and

report to provide current medical history.

Health care tests - Nursing homes are required to offer flu shots, pneumonia vaccines, and

tuberculosis (TB) tests within three days of admission.

Completed admissions paperwork - Paperwork can usually be filled out prior to or on the day of

admission.

Nursing home financial assessment.

5. Why do people go to the center/what is the main reason and what are they offered?
RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 78

Because of multiple medical problems over time, inability to take care of themselves, families

worry about older adults with cognitive problems, memory problems and dementia, making it

difficult for them to manage at home on day-to-day function, such as eating, bathing, dressing,

managing medications and finances, and safety.

6. How do you think your wor can help improve elderly’s life?

Eventually, your parents become older. They become sick, weak, and frail. With their conditions

come the need for more attention, more love, more understanding, and more importantly, quality

elderly care.

1. Assisting with personal care: bathing and grooming, dressing, toileting, and exercise

Basic food preparation: preparing meals, shopping, housekeeping, laundry, and other.

2. General health care: overseeing medication and prescriptions usage, appointment reminders and

administering medicine

3. Mobility assistance: help with getting in and out of a wheelchair, car, or shower

4. Personal supervision: providing constant companionship and general supervision

5. Transportation: driving to and from activities, running errands, and helping to get in and out of

wheelchair-accessible vehicle

6. Emotional support: being a stable companion and supporter in all matters personal, health-

related, and emotional

7. Care for the elderly: orienting or grounding someone with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia,

relaying information from a doctor to family members

8. Back-up care (or respite) services: providing other caregivers a break

9.Home organization: help with organizing, packing, or cleaning for a trip, or general house care

and cleaning
RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 79

10. Health monitoring: following a care plan and noticing any changes in the individual’s health,

recording, and reporting any differences

7. Do you think an elderly house or resort is important in any country?

If yes, please explain why? We want to ensure the well-being of everyone, including older people.

As part of our commitment to best serve and protect our senior citizens. Looking for a home is

never an easy process, especially if it is for an elderly person who needs a lot of caring and love.

8. How likely are you to recommend an elderly to go to a healthcare center?

Yes, I do, the steady security at an old age home gives them protection from intruders and helps

them live a safe and secure life. One of the factors that make old age homes attractive to elders is

the companionship. They are in constant company of people their own age.

The Elderly Interview

Hello, I am delighted to be interviewing you today because this interview will support my project

immensely.

1. Could you please tell me briefly about yourself?

Hi, my name is Fawzeya Shawesh, a Lebanese but have been living in Jeddah for more than 40

years.

2. Do you think an elderly resort/ home and medical center is important?

Yes! It is not only important but extremely important and needed especially in Jeddah because

there is no such place existing here.

3. Who is this center important for and how would it impact the life of adults?
RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 80

This center is important for the elderly people who need special care, especially those who are

living alone without family members attending their needs. On the other hand, instead of living

alone, this center will let us interact with other people and prolong our life span. Elderly needs

professional care in terms of administering our medicine.

4. What services would you like to see being offered in the elderly resort/ home and medical

care center?

The services I would like to see and anticipated in this center are good medical and emotional care,

time management, physiotherapist, clean facility, an afternoon tea that serves as a one-way step in

interacting with others, and a warm and caring staff who treated us as a friend or a family member

rather than patient. Likewise, it would be amazing if they gather an event that helps us uplift our

morals when things seem bad li e other’s Day.

5. Tell me a day in your life and how can you entertain yourself?

I loved gardening and communicating with others but due to mobility issues that I had, my

movement is limited, and I would just let the day pass by watching my tv series and news and

talking to my families in Lebanon through phones.

6. Do you receive pressure from other family members to get health care problems taken care

of promptly?

Yes, I do! My son thought that I do not know what is right for me in taking care of my health. I

understand his point knowing that he is concerned about my wellness, however, I will not go to

any hospital to get treated unless it is an emergency.

RUNNING HEAD: IKIGAI ELDERLY RESORT/ HOME AND MEDICAL COMFORTS 81

7. How much do you trust health care providers to make medical decisions that are in your

best interest?

Due to their professionalism in their respective fields, and good services, I do trust them like 95%.

8. If you were to go to the center, would you have any problem with transportation?

Yes! My son tends to be busy because of his work, his availability somewhat hinders me in visiting

the center, it would be amazing and advised if the center could provide transportation for us, given

that we are elders.

9. Have you ever visited such a center/ and would you like to?

I have never been to such a center, but I have heard about them. It really captures my interest to

visit such a place because instead of letting myself living alone and having a depressing thought

over my situation, it would be nicer for my well-being to stay in such place, with others being

around, I can communicate and share my ideas with them too.
