Activity 1: AC/DC Machines

Questions:

1. What is electromagnetic induction and how does it relate to AC machines?

- Electromagnetic induction is a fundamental principle of physics wherein it describes the

generation of electromotive force (EMF) aka voltage in a conductor when exposed to a changing
magnetic field. This phenomenon is the basis for operating electrical devices such as AC
machines. Even in AC machines like generators and transformers, electromagnetic induction
plays a vital role. A good example of this is when a coil was turned within magnetic field
(generator) or when the magnetic field in coil is varied (transformer) moves AC Voltage in the
coil. Through electromagnetic induction, AC voltage can be used to produce electricity and
transform voltage levels.

2. Who discovered the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction, and what is it known as?

- Electromagnetic induction was discovered by Michael Faraday in the early 19 th century. It was
also the basis and the origin of the Faraday’s Law of Magnetic Induction where it states that the
EMF is directly proportional to the magnetic flux.

3. In which applications are DC motors widely used?

- In our society nowadays, DC motor were widely used in/ where constant and steady rotation is
required. Some applications are the windshield wipers, robot joints, pumps and compressors, blenders,
sewing machines, vacuum cleaners and drones.

4. How does the stator interact with the rotor in a DC motor?

- In a DC motor stator interacts by rotor to produce motion. The stator is the stationary part of the
motor and typically consists of permanent magnets or electromagnets. The rotor, on the other hand, is the
rotating part of the motor and includes the armature (a coil of wire) and a commutator. When electrical
current flows through the armature coil, it creates a magnetic field, which interacts with the magnetic
field produced by the stator. This interaction results in a rotational force (torque) on the rotor, causing it
to spin.

5. What controls the direction of torque in a DC motor?

- In a DC motor, the direction of the current flowing through the armature coil is changed to
control the torque. Typically, brushes and a commutator are used to do this. The brushes make contact
with the commutator, which is a split ring attached to the rotor. The direction of the magnetic field
produced by the armature coil changes when the polarity of the current flowing through the brushes, and
this shifts the direction of torque in the motor. As a result, by altering the current's direction within the
armature, the direction of rotation can be changed.
