Father of Philosophy

Aristotle is one of the greatest and brightest minds ever because of his philosophical

views, but more especifically the entirety of Aristotelianism helped shape Roman, Greek,

Islamic, and Christian culture. Also most of the sciences that exist in the modern world.

Background

Aristotle was born in Stagira, Greece, 384BC (Kenny, 2021); when he was very young he

became and orphan and his father’s close friend, Proxenos, took care of him. When he turned

17 he sent him to Plato’s Academy to get better education and there he became Plato’s

student for nearly 20 years until the day Plato died (347BC) (gohalkidiki, s.f.). That year he

left Athens and went to Assos, there he tutored for 3 years and then went to Lesvos where he

tutored for only 2 years because he was invited to Macedonia to tutor Alexander the Great

(History.com Editors, 2019). In 335BC he returned to Athenes and founded his own school,

the Lyceum, with financial support from Alexander (gohalkidiki, s.f.); and he dedicated most

of his time to be involved in it. (Biography.com Editors, 2019). Anti-Macedonian sentiment

forced Aristotle to leave Athens and he later died in the north in 322BC of a digestive

problem (History.com Editors, 2019).

Accomplishments

Aristotle is known for his contributions to biology, botany, chemistry, ethics, history,

logic, formal logic, metaphysics, criticism, rhetoric, philosophy of mind, philosophy of

science, physics, poetics, political theory, psychology, and zoology we learned from his

works, books, teachings, and students. The Alexandrians also claim he wrote around 440

works in his life (gohalkidiki, s.f.), most of which have been lost (Biography.com Editors,

2019). Besides that, Aristotle was founder of a very successful school that became one of the

first to assemble a “great library” of the world (History.com Editors, 2019). He is also the

founder of zoology and formal logic, he created a classification system for living creatures,
Father of Philosophy

and founded Aristotelianism. Aristotelianism is what he is most famous for, because it

represents his philosophical ideologies and his approach on all the sciences previously

mentioned combined into one philosophy (Peza, 2019). This is why describing Aristotle as

The Father of Philosophy, is a massive understatement.
