Subtopic Subtopic 2.7: Modern Evolutionary Classification

I. Multiple Choice Questions

1. Which of the below best differentiate the evolutionary classification from the Linnaean classification
system?

A. It groups the organisms based on simple similarities and differences with no

consideration on common ancestor
B. It groups the organisms based on their habitat, geographical distribution, and physical
characters
C. It groups the organisms based on common ancestor rather than only similarities and
differences
D. It groups the organisms based on their names, size, and weight

Use the diagram below to answer questions 2 and 3.

2. Which of the below is represented by the letter Y?

A. Ancestral linage
B. Branch point
C. Clade
D. Derived character

3. Which of the below is represented by the letter X?

A. Ancestral linage
B. Branch point
C. Clade
D. Derived character

4. Which of the below evidence is best to use when the anatomical evidence is not enough to classify
organism?
A. Body mass and shape
B. Composition of cell membrane
C. DNA Analysis
D. RNA Analysis

5. Which of the below best describe eukaryotes?

A. Autotroph with cell wall made up of peptidoglycan

B. Autotrophs that can move from place to place
C. Only heterotrophic that can move from place to place
D. Unicellular or Multicellular, Autotrophic or Heterotrophic

II. Free Response Questions

6. The diagram below shows three vultures. A scientist has claimed that they are not similar to each other
but the anatomical similarities are confusing the scientist to classify them all in the same species.
Identify and explain another way that can help to answer this claim.

To get more accurate classification, DNA analysis could be made to the three species,
which will then reveal the two species that are most related to each other , in this
particular case American vultures are more related to storks so they can be together in
the same Clade.

7. Use the table below, which shows milk components in different mammalian species, to answer
questions a and b.

Casein Protein A Protein B Lactose

Human - + - +
Cat - + - +
Cow + + + +
Horse + + + +
Pig + + + +
(+): character present; (-): character absent

a. Use the template provided below to construct a cladogram of the species and indicate on the
cladogram where each character arose in the evolutionary process.

Cows
Casein & protein A
Horse

Pigs
Lactose &
protein A

Humans

No Casein & protein A

Cats
b. On the cladogram, put a circle around point that represents the common ancestor of all the
organisms.
