belief that there was open sea at the pole itself– a point
we will return to later– explained by the presence of
the sun during the long northern polar summer. It was
thought that the open sea was ringed by ice formed in
rivers running along the coast.
In conclusion, expeditions to far northern and south-
ern climes led to what Frédérique Rémy describes as
‘spectacular’ progress in mapping the polar regions,
compared to the sixteenth century. Yet when the great
explorer La Pérouse died shortly before the turn of the
nineteenth century, the poles remained cloaked in mys-
tery. Arguments in favour of open seas at the pole, the
elusiveness of the North-West Passage, the notion that
there was no land in Antarctica, and the belief that sea-
water could not freeze together formed a major scientific
blind spot that must be taken into account in attempting
to outline the dominant image of the planet at that point
in history. At the same time, the partial survival of Flood
geology based on the poles, as recorded in Bernardin de
Saint-Pierre’s Études de la nature, fed into and strength-
ened these erroneous beliefs.
It is incredibly difficult to grasp what was going on
in the minds of our forebears, who would have been
more or less well read on the discoveries and debates
of the day. What mental traces were left by texts full of
the imaginary marvels of the polar regions, so popular
in the golden age of travel writing? It is hard to tell: for
the most cultivated and best-read individuals, they came
to overlay Pytheas’ Ancient Greek account of his navi-
gation to the far north, the ancient kingdom of Thule
and the frozen sea around the poles. Samuel Taylor
Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1798) sheds
some light on the complex interaction of scientific cer-
tainties and uncertainties in the minds of men, gleaned
from their readings.

the sun shone a pale, weak orange; in the Alps, the sun
was described as a ‘dark red’ disk that could be looked
at without harming the eyes, and giving off ‘bluish’
light. By night, the moon and stars were barely visible.
The fog that shrouded the landscape even when the sun
was at its height also made the air stink of sulphur, as
far south as Naples. Trees shed their leaves in June. The
fog proved deadly. It was accused of causing ‘putrid
red fever’ and spreading new diseases, particularly ‘gan-
grenous sore throats’. The dry fog also led to dreadful
storms in the summer of 1783, worst of all on 10–11
July, when the press reported children were struck down
by lightning.
From this book’s point of view, the main point is that
the phenomenon remained unexplained. People were
terrified because they had no idea what was causing
it. Journals called for explanations. Readers, learning
that the scourge was afflicting almost all of Europe and
even parts of Asia, wrote letters sharing their astonish-
ment and alarm. The contemporary meteorologist Louis
Cotte wrote that people believed it was the end of the
world. The dry fog veiling the sun led some churchmen
to conclude that Doomsday was drawing near. Old folk
said they had never seen or heard of anything like it. The
first man to connect the phenomenon to the eruption in
Iceland was said to be Benjamin Franklin, though in fact
two other less well-known scholars beat him to the idea.
The first was Jacques-Antoine Mourgue de Montredon,
who suggested it as early as August 1783 in a paper to
the Montpellier Academy, followed shortly afterwards
by a Belgian Benedictine monk by the name of Robert
Hickmann. Some scholars put forward other hypoth-
eses to explain the catastrophe, such as an overflow of
‘electric fluid’ or an earthquake that struck Calabria
and Messina on 5 February 1873. The ‘dry fogs’ were a

the course of the day. It had been known since the work
of the British meteorologist George Hadley in the mid-
eighteenth century that masses of air moved according
to temperature changes. At a local level, folk tradition
had also identified and named the winds common in the
vicinity.
On 13 January 1806, four years after Luke Howard
first presented his cloud categories, the Royal Navy com-
mander Francis Beaufort was stationed in Plymouth.
In his journal, he devised a classification,7 or rather a
progressive, numbered wind scale, together with appro-
priate orders for warships under sail. Each classification,
from calm, light air and light breeze at the lower end to
storm, violent storm and hurricane at the other, told sail-
ors what to do to adapt their speed or avoid shipwreck.
By 1829, the scale was in use by most captains. In
1838, the Admiralty made it obligatory for the Royal
Navy. Other scales were used alongside the Beaufort
scale until the first international meteorological confer-
ence in Brussels in 1853.
The second step that improved scientific knowledge
of the skies in the first half of the nineteenth century was
a project to draw a dynamic map of atmospheric phe-
nomena by means of a network of observers extending
around the planet. This was a major undertaking that
laid the groundwork for dynamic meteorology. In 1844,
Adolphe Quételet, director of the Brussels Observatory,
spoke of his ambition to use such a network to identify
and map atmospheric phenomena.8
The research presented in this chapter was rather thin.
The only real progress in filling in the scientific map of
the skies in these opening decades of the nineteenth
century came from Luke Howard’s cloud categories and
the Beaufort scale, both of which were rapidly taken
up by scientists. Real progress only came just after
