Q.1) All Questions are only TWO marks.

a) Write the expression for minimum shear reinforcement giving the meaning of the terms involved.

ANS:

Sv = 0.87𝑓𝑦𝐴𝑠𝑣/ 0.4𝑏

Sv – Spacing of stirrups

fy – Characteristic strength of steel,

Asv – Area of Stirrup bar,

b – width of the beam

b) State two functions of Bent up bars provided in flexure section.

ANS: i. Bent up bars used as a shear Reinforcement in beam.

ii. Bent up bars used to resist negative bending moments in beam.

iii. Bent up bars gives economy in beam section.

c) Write expression for minimum and maximum reinforcement in beam.

d) State two uses of bent-up bar.

e)

Q.2) All Questions are only FOUR marks.

a) Diameter of steel bar is 20 mm. Use Fe415 steel and design bond stress is 1.2 MPa. For plain bars
in tension. Find development length in tension and compression.

b) Diameter of steel is 20 mm, Steel grade fe415 and bond stress 1.2 Mpa for plain bars in tension,
calculate the development length for bars in compression.

c) A Rectangular RC beam of effective section 230 mm wide and 400 mm Deep is reinforced with 3
bars of 16 mm diameter. Determine the shear resistance of concrete section, if beam carries
ultimate shear of 80 kN. Use M20 concrete of Fe415 Steel. Take, permissible shear stress in concrete
equal to 0.53 N/mm2.
d) State the situation where minimum share reinforcement is provided in RCC beam also give its
expression with meaning of each term used.

ANS: If Nominal shear stress (Tv) < Design shear strength of concrete (Tc), Tv Tc: - No shear
reinforcement is required but provide minimum shear reinforcement in the form of stirrups
Expression for minimum shear reinforcement:

Sv = 0.87𝑓𝑦𝐴𝑠𝑣/ 0.4𝑏

Where, Asv = total cross section area of stirrups legs effective in shear

Sv = stirrups spacing along the length of the member

b = breadth of beam or web of flanged beam

fy= characteristic strength of stirrup reinforcement in N/mm2 which shall not be taken greater than
415 N/ mm2 .

e) Determine the development length of 16 mm diameter of Fe 415 bar in compression if design

bond stress is 1.4 Mpa for plain bars in tension.

f) State the reason for providing shear reinforcement in the beam and state it’s two forms with neat
figure.

g) Calculate the development length, if a 20mm diameter bar of grade Fe 415 is used for resisting
compression. Take x bd= 1.2 N/mm2 for plain bar in tension.

Q.3) All Questions are only SIX marks.

a) A simply supported beam of span 5m carries a working udl of intensity 40 kN/m. Size of beam 350
x 500mm (effective). It is reinforced with 4 bars 20mm diameter. Design 8mm diameter 2 legged
stirrups if one 20 mm diameter bar is bent up. Take ‫ ح‬c = 0.5 2 N/mm2 ‫ ح‬cmax = 2.8 N/mm2 Use
M20 grade & Fe415 steel.

b) State the various forms of shear reinforcements.

ANS: i) Vertical Shear Stirrups:

Vus = 0.87∗𝑓𝑦∗𝐴𝑠𝑣∗𝑑 /𝑆𝑣

1) Vus – balance shear

2) Fy – Grade of steel/characteristic strength of stirrup

3) Asv – Area of shear stirrups with in a distance Sv

4) d – effective depth of beam

5) Sv – spacing of shear stirrups along the length of members.

ii) Inclined Shear stirrups:

Vus = 0.87∗𝑓𝑦∗𝐴𝑠𝑣∗𝑑(𝑆𝑖𝑛 𝛼 + 𝐶𝑜𝑠 𝛼) /𝑆𝑣

1) 𝛼 – angle between the inclined stirrup and the axis of member not less than 45˚

iii) Bent up bars:

Vus = 0.87fy Asb.Sin α

1) Asb – area of bent-up bar

2) Vus - balance shear

3) Fy - Grade of steel/characteristic strength of stirrup

4) α - angle between the inclined stirrup and the axis of member not less than 45˚

c) Calculate the spacing of 6 mm diameter mild steel of two legged vertical stirrups for a simply
supported beam of span 3.6 m with 230 mm x 350 effective in cross-section. The beam is reinforced
with 4-bars of 12 mm diameter on tension side and are continued into supports of grade Fe415. The
beam is carrying total u. d. l. of 24 kN/m over entire span. Assume M20 concrete mix. Draw a cross-
