NARRATIVE REPORT ON NATIONAL LEARNING CAMP

SCIENCE 8 CONSOLIDATION CLASS
August 16, 2023

The National Learning Camp, organized by Department of Education, was indeed a

dynamic and enriching program that was designed to provide our learners with a productive
and enjoyable summer experience. This camp aims to address the learning gaps of learners as
well as to enhance their academic skills, foster personal growth in an inclusive learning
environment and develop sense of achievement as they experience mastery in their learning.

The teaching resources and tools were provided to the teacher and accordingly, the
teacher was able to prepare even with limited time available before the class began. I was
confident in my instruction as the program provided a comprehensive tool for us to teach
scientific concepts and principle that facilitates a structure and engaging learning experience for
the learners. The core of this learning program lies in concept development. The teaching
materials provided by DepEd offered a range of questions at different difficulty level, from
lower-order to higher-order thinking. Time allotment was even provided to strike balance
between my lesson delivery and student engagement. So during my class, we were able to
supply a significant time on task for my learners as it emphasized on active participation in their
learning process.

On the first day, class rules were discussed and active engagement and interaction was
emphasized. Discussion of policies and the learning program was smoothly done as the students
were already familiar with their previous classes in Math and English. Students were
encouraged to participate in routine and non-routine question answering activities however few
can still respond to fluent verbal explanation whether in English, tagalog or bisaya. The teacher
noticed that this is a vital component in their learning therefore to promote effective
communication, the teacher applied the peer-to-peer learning while some of the interpretation

of terminologies were done by the teacher. Through the practice of solving non-routine
questions, my students had enhanced their conceptual understanding and gained valuable
insights into activity challenges.

The first six lessons, the teacher discussed the Physics concepts using video lesson
presentation and simple experiments. Students were engaged because they are doing the
learning through answering questions, writing, discussing and reading. Critical concepts in
Physics were included as the teacher relate them based on key idea of the laws of motion. The
questions are offered at different levels of difficulty involving lower- to higher-order thinking,
starting with questions of modest complexity up to those that require more developed
reasoning. Students are provided with opportunities to practice solving non-routine questions
to help improve their conceptual understanding by applying known content to subject-related
problems.

Each lesson topic comprises five components with approximate timings to guide the
teacher in pacing the lessons. Science lessons have been made easier as the teacher have
been readily provided with tools and the following activities were done to encourage students
in answering their workbooks with time duration without jeopardizing the importance of each
activities. The teacher allowed the students to answer routine and non-routine questions,
respond to verbal questions and explanations, interpret as the teacher explain appropriate
terminologies. The students were able to discuss aspects with their peers, explained or justify
their reasoning and thinking as they worked productively on their own and listened carefully to
their teacher and peers.

In the afternoon class, a game-based learning activity was integrated with the objective
of reinforcing key concepts related to the three laws of motion. It was structured to
incorporate both individual and collaborative elements. The game chosen for this activity was
"Charade" and “Arm Wrestling” which was designed to align with the curriculum and provide
an immersive learning experience to my students.

Conclusion: This National Learning Camp has encouraged me to reflect on my teaching
approaches, to my students’ learning and to the success of my lesson. With the available
teaching materials, I was able to analyze the effectiveness of the different teaching methods
and hence, can adapt my strategies to cater to diverse learning needs of my students. I strongly
appreciate how these materials were crafted in such a way that the teacher can apply different
pedagogical approaches, time-on task management, deliberate practice of teaching styles as
well as meet the cognitive demands of my learners. Because this camp emphasized on the
importance of lower-order skills in order to establish foundation for higher-order skill, the
students were able to build a solid learning experience, faced their learning challenges and
enjoyed learning in a new light.
