Book Review of ‘Fat Kid Rules the World’ by K.

L Going

Hey Guys! I hope you are all doing well. I will be reviewing ‘Fat Kid Rules the World’, by K.L Going.
The book involves main characters Troy Billings, and Curt MacCrae. Troy Billings is a precisely 296
pound 17 year old boy. Because of his size, he is always bullied by people at school, total strangers,
and even his dad and brother. His mother is unfortunately dead, but that doesn’t affect the plot as
much. Because of all this, and Troy not knowing how to express himself, or what his true potential is,
his life is spiralling out of control. That is, until he meets Curt MacCrae. Curt is a homeless school
dropout, but he is one of New York’s best punk guitarist geniuses.

Curt convinces Troy to turn his life around, and he suddenly wants to form a band, with Troy on
drums. Will Troy be able to make a name for himself, and become a respected person? Will he fail
and carry on his usual life? I’ll leave it to you to find out!

Here is an extract to show you the author's writing style.

“I see it out of the corner of my eye as the man moves his fork toward his mouth. He's talking to the
woman and he looks like the same pompous man I've been watching for the last hour. Truly. Then he
moves the fork and a piece of pasta falls off. It hits his lip and smears cheese down his perfect chin.
He tries to act cool, but for a split second, like a flash of light, I see what he's hiding.

Curt looks up with his chin still on the table. He's watching me watch them. "You saw it, didn't you?"
he breathes.

I shake my head. "No, I didn't see anything really...." I squint.

The woman puts a small amount of egg on her fork, then lifts it tentatively. She's trying to act beautiful,
in control. She moves her body sideways, then opens her mouth....

"See?" Curt asks drowsily. "You see it?"

I stare, fascinated. Maybe, after all, I do.

Curt nods in answer to the question I haven't asked.

"Finally," he says. "Do you get it now?"

I nod very slowly.

In this extract, you can see that the writing is in first person, which until now, was a pretty
unconventional way of writing novels, however, books like that have started to appear more often. The
author also writes in a pretty mysterious manner, because in some extracts, I couldn’t really tell what
someone was looking for, or looking at. The author alternates
between long and short sentences really well, and uses really descriptive adjectives to compensate
for the mysterious manner of writing.

I would really recommend this book to anyone over the age of 10, as it really captivates any reader,
and makes the book so hard to put down. It may not contain as much action, but the strong
backstories of all the characters makes the book very interesting.
Whether you enjoy these kinds of books, got a recommendation from a friend, or just want to read
something for fun, I think ‘Fat Kid Rules the World’ definitely has a place on your bookshelf!
