Constructivist approaches to teaching

Constructivist learning theory

underpins a variety of student-
centered teaching methods and
techniques which contrast with
traditional education, whereby
knowledge is simply passively
transmitted by teachers to students.
Strategies and Activities
 Role-playing – By simply letting the students take on the role of
various book characters, famous historical and current affairs
figures, body organs, plant parts, sports materials, the students
shall be better able to deeply comprehend the depth and
importance of these personalities and entities.
 Hands-on, creative activities – One way to initiate these is for
the teacher to pose an open-ended question on how to solve a
particular problem.
 Real-life simulations – Constructivist teaching believes that
students learn best by experience.

Essential Components to Constructivist
Teaching

 Elicit prior knowledge

New knowledge is created in relation to learner’s pre-existing
knowledge.

 Create cognitive dissonance

Assign problems and activities that will challenge
students.
 Apply knowledge with feedback
Encourage students to evaluate new information and modify
existing knowledge.

 Reflect on learning
Provide students with an opportunity to show you (and
themselves) what they have learned.
Main Purpose of
Constructivist
classoom is:

to help their students learn based

on the idea that people actively
construct or make their own
knowledge, and that reality is
determined by your experiences
as a learner.
