Transmission Board Expansion

• When a cable is referred to as subrack internal - it is used for connecting

two ET-MFX boards within a subrack to each other.

• When a cable is referred to as an Inter Subrack Cable - it is used to connect

an expansion subrack to the Main Interconnection Boards.

2.4.7.3 First Subrack Containing ET-MFX Within a Cabinet

If the RNC does not have any ET-MFX installed before the expansion procedure
is started - it is required that the first subrack that is expanded - is expanded
with a minimum of two ET-MFX12 boards. These two boards will be referred
to as the Main Interconnection Boards. They will offer redundant transmission
paths out of the RNC. When transmission is further expanded, each board that
is added needs a path to the Main Interconnection Boards, either directly to the
Main Interconnection Boards or switched through other ET-MFX boards.

A typical configuration where the first two ET-MFX12 boards are installed in a
Main Subrack is presented in Figure 17 on page 27.

• First the subrack internal cables (A in Figure 17 on page 27) should be

installed. The subrack internal cables should connect adjacent ET-MFX12
boards.

• Secondly, connections should be installed from the next available

connector, on each of the left-hand and right-hand ET-MFX12 boards. The
connections should be routed to the ICF (B in Figure 17 on page 27). These
cables are called the Main External Interconnections. The installation of the
connector plate and ICF connectors are shown in Figure 28 on page 40.

• Optionally - if ET-MFX12 boards are to be installed in more than one

subrack within a cabinet - cables for connecting the ET-MFX12 boards
in the first and second extension subrack, should be installed (C and D
in Figure 17 on page 27). These cables are referred to as Inter Subrack
Cables.

• Finally additional interconnect can be installed. Any of the remaining board

connectors may be connected to the ICF (see E in Figure 17 on page 27).

2.4.7.4 Further Expansion in a Cabinet

Expansion with ET-MFX type boards can be done in many ways and will vary
depending on the configuration before the expansion. The expansions shown
below should be treated as examples illustrating the principles for expansion.

When the Main Interconnection Boards are installed the principles for expansion
are quite straightforward. Each board that is added should have a connection
to the Main Interconnection Boards. For full link redundancy, two paths to the
Main Interconnection Boards should exist from the ET-MFX board. The figures

74/1543-FAB 102 614 Uen D 2009-01-13 27

Transmission Board Expansion

below show the sequence of installing the first, second and third expansion
board within a cabinet. Figure 18 on page 29 to Figure 20 on page 31, show the
expansion of ET-MFX12 boards. Figure 21 on page 33 to Figure 25 on page
37, shows the installation of ET-MFX13 boards in a subrack that already has
one or two ET-MFX12 boards installed.

In Figure 18 on page 29 the following cables are shown:

• A in Figure 18 on page 29 is the Inter Subrack Cable connecting the added

board to one of the Main Interconnection Boards. The cable should be
connected to the first available connector on the left-hand or right-hand
board in the subrack containing the Main External Interconnections.
To connect the Inter Subrack Cable it may be necessary to move one
board-to-ICF connection from the Main Interconnection Boards to the
board that is added.

Note: For full link redundancy it is necessary to have one link to each
of the left-hand or right-hand board in the subrack containing the
Main External Interconnections.

• B in Figure 18 on page 29 shows additional interconnect. The number

of additional interconnect cables to install is dependent on desired
configuration.

Transmission Board Expansion

• If two Inter Subrack Cables (A in Figure 19 on page 30) are previously

installed, one should be moved from the first board in the subrack to the
board being added.

• If only one Inter Subrack Cable (A in Figure 19 on page 30) was previously
installed, one additional Inter Subrack Cable should be installed connecting
the added board to the Main Interconnection Boards. The cable should be
connected to the first free connector on the outermost board in the subrack
containing the Main External Interconnections. To connect the Inter
Subrack Cable it may be necessary to move one board-to-ICF connection
from the Main Interconnection Boards to the board that is added.

• One subrack internal cable should be installed between the two boards
within the subrack. This cable is illustrated as B in Figure 19 on page 30.

• Finally additional interconnections may be installed (see B in Figure 18

on page 29)

Procedure

When the third ET-MFX12 board is installed in a subrack, the only addition that
is necessary is a new subrack internal cable. Move one of the already existing
subrack internal cables and install one new cable. Use the first available
connectors on adjacent ET-MFX12 boards. A subrack with three ET-MFX12
boards installed is shown in Figure 20 on page 31. Additional interconnections
may be installed (see B in Figure 18 on page 29). Further expansions with
ET-MFX12 are made according to the same principles; move one old link and
add one new link between the existing boards and the newly installed board.

Figure 20 Cabling within a subrack when a third ET-MFX12 board is installed

When a subrack is expanded with an ET-MFX13 board, the subrack internal

cabling will have to include both optical fibre and electrical cables for connecting
boards within a subrack. The use of optical fibre requires SFPs to be installed
in the boards (see Section 2.4.7.5 on page 37). The boards within an extension
subrack should be connected so that they form a loop together with the boards
in the subrack containing the Main Interconnection Boards. The expansion
sequences in Figure 21 on page 33 to Figure 25 on page 37, illustrate the
principles of expansion with various numbers of ET-MFX13 boards.

When the first ET-MFX13 board is installed in a subrack where one ET-MFX12
is already installed the following cables need to be moved or installed:

Transmission Board Expansion

The first ET-MFX13 board being installed in a subrack is shown in Figure 21

on page 33.

• If two Inter Subrack Cables (B in Figure 19 on page 30) are previously

installed, one should be moved from the first board in the subrack to the
board being added.

• If only one Inter Subrack Cable (B in Figure 19 on page 30) was previously
installed, one additional should be installed connecting the added board
to the Main Interconnection Boards. The cable should be connected to
the first free connector on the outermost board in the subrack containing
the Main External Interconnections. To connect the Inter Subrack Cable
it may be necessary to move one board-to-ICF connection from the Main
Interconnection Boards .

• A subrack internal cable should be installed between the two boards within
the subrack. In the example shown in Figure 21 on page 33, the subrack
internal cable needs to be an optical fibre. The fibre needs to be connected
to SFP modules installed in the boards. For installation of SFP modules
see Section 2.4.7.5 on page 37.

Note: Multi-mode optical fibre cables can only be connected directly to the
SFP module. Multi-mode cables for connection to the ICF are not
provided by the RNC.

If a fibre is connected directly to an SFP, the fibre should still be routed along
the cable shelf to the side of the cabinet to prevent the fibre from obstructing
access to other boards. See the installation of optical cables in an SFP module

Reconfiguration
When expanding transmission it might be necessary to rearrange the
connection plates in the ICF. Depending on which configuration the expansion
start from and which configuration the expansion ends in, the rearrangements
will vary.

Connection plates shown in Figure 33 on page 46 are used:

• 1 - Connection plate used for ET-MC41, ET-M4/22, and optical connections

to ET-MFX.

• 2 - Connection plate used for ET-M3.

• 3 - Connection plate used for ET-MF4 , and optical connections to ET-MFX.

Figure 33 Connection plate types

For new nodes the rules presented on Page46 are used. If possible it is
recommended to use the same rules at transmission expansion. The ICF is
divided into sections according to Table 1 on page 9, Table 2 on page 9 and
Table 3 on page 9. When referring to the right or left side in the rules, reference
is to the left or right side of the section associated with the subrack that is
being expanded.

Note: It is recommended to use the rules for placement of connection plates if

this does not involve major rerouting of already installed signal cables.
If the installed cables are hard to rearrange - it is better not to move the
associated plates, and just add the new plates on the first free ICF slot.

Rules for placement of ICF Connection Plates:

• Single width plates are mounted from the left

• Double width plates are mounted from the right.

Based on the available connection plates and the rules presented above - two
examples are shown. The first example show a major reconfiguration where
the following changes are made:
