Reading Note #1:

Title: Feminist Reflexivity on Positionality and Knowledge Production
Author: Jiyoung Lee-An
Key Concept: Jiyoung Lee compares and contrasts feminist works/ ideologies between her
experiences in Canada and Korea
Understanding:
 We see how different feminism can be between two completely different countries with
different rights and cultural procreations, how Korean work can be more challenging than
work in Canada
 Different factors in a geographical shift and who you are can reflect what work you do
and how challenging it can be
 Also opens up the aspect of culture and how being one thing and adapting to something
new can be challenging depending on where you are from the perspective of the author
herself as a woman coming from a mainstream Korean nation to a member of racialized
minority immigrant community (Canadian culture vs Korean culture)
 Different perspectives and meanings to the author but also what it could mean to people
with a different mindset
 Opening up the idea that relativity can play a big role in interpreting and producing
knowledge

Issues/ Questions:
1. Because this article is written in the eyes of a female through lenses like feminism and
cultural aspects, what may be the outcomes of these studies to a male vs a female?
2. How could the work you do affect how challenging it may be depending on where you
are/ who you are?
