2 PRODUCTS

2.1 GENERAL

A Septic Tank (prefabricated) is an alternative to a conventional on-site

sewage system with very special and limited applications. The main function
of a septic tank is to separate, retain and partially digest settle-able and
floatable solids in wastewater. The working capacity of a septic tank shall be
sufficient for all these functions to occur. Septic tanks shall be watertight,
with sufficient structural strength and integrity to withstand external soil
pressures, internal and external water pressures and any likely imposed
loading. Septic tanks situated under driveways and parking areas shall be
designed to carry the appropriate vehicle loads. Sufficient access to the tank
shall be available for inspection and de-sludgeing (sludge pump-out)
activities.

2.2 PROTECTION OF DRINKING WATER SOURCE

Where site investigations identify sources of groundwater used or intended

for human consumption, it is unlikely to be suitable for a drainage field. The
environmental regulator should be consulted before undertaking detailed
system design and planning. A number of geological and hydrogeological
factors control the risk to groundwater, including the type and depth of soil
and distance to the water table. Other environmental factors that should be
considered include but are not limited to:

a. risk of health hazard or nuisance;

b. impacts on wells, boreholes and other water sources used or intended
for human consumption;
c. amenity or conservation habitat;
d. flooding or waterlogging due to unsuitable drainage characteristics;
e. nutrient overloading of surface water catchments

A drainage field should not be installed in a flood plain or in seasonally

waterlogged, boggy or frequently wetted areas

2.3 CAPACITY OF SEPTIC TANKS.

The capacity of wastewater shall be calculated as per the Table 3.2.7 of

Section # 3 of ADSSC Design Guidelines; as daily flow rate. The capacity of
septic tank and its disposal system shall be limited by the soil structure
classification, as specified in Table No. 1 of this specification. The capacity
shall be calculated as per following calculation:

- Waste/sewage flow, up to 5600 Liters / day

Minimum Septic Tank Volume = Wastewater Flow x 1.5

- Waste/sewage flow, over 5600 Liters / day

Minimum Septic Tank Volume = Wastewater Flow x 0.75 + 4260

Note : Working (or liquid) volume is measured from the inside bottom of the
tank to invert of the outlet. The volume of water filled up to the outlet level
shall be at least equal to the nominal capacity claimed by the manufacturer.

2.4 AREA OF DISPOSAL FIELDS AND SEEPAGE PITS.

A system shall be consisting of trenches with pipes and gravel aggregates,

installed for the purpose of receiving wastewater from a septic tank and
transmitting it into soil for final treatment and disposal, this system may
called a soil infiltration system shall comply with the requirements of EN
12566 for the drainage field, seepage field or bed, distribution field,
subsurface disposal area, or the treatment and disposal field. The minimum
effective absorption area in disposal fields in m2, and in seepage pits in m2
of base and sidewall(s), shall be calculated for the required septic tank
capacity in Liters (L) and/or estimated wastewater/sewage flow rate,
whichever is greater, and shall conform to Table No. 1; as determined for
the type of soil found in the excavation, and shall be as follows:

a- When disposal fields are installed, shall not be less than fourteen 14 m2
of trench bottom and shall be provided for each system exclusive of any
hard pan, rock, clay, or other impervious formations. The trench sidewall
shall exceed the required 30cm but not to be exceeding by 90cm below
the leach line, all to be permitted to be added to the trench bottom area
when computing absorption areas.

b- Where leaching beds are permitted in lieu of trenches, the area of each
such bed shall be at least 50 percent greater than the tabular
requirements for trenches. Perimeter sidewall shall exceed the required
30cm but not to be exceeding by 90cm below the leach line, all to be
permitted to be added to the trench bottom area when computing
absorption areas.

c- No excavation for a leach line or leach bed shall be located within 1.5m
of the water table nor to a depth where sewage contaminates the
underground water stratum that is usable for domestic purposes.

Exception: In areas where the records or data indicate that the ground waters
are grossly degraded, the 1.5m separation requirement shall be permitted to be
reduced by the ADSSC / Engineer. The contractor shall supply evidence of
groundwater depth to the satisfaction of the ADSSC / Engineer.

d- The minimum effective absorption area in any seepage pit shall be

calculated as the excavated sidewall area below the inlet exclusive of

(nominal unit width) in m2. The required area shall be calculated using
Table 3.2.7 of Section # 3 of ADSSC Design Guidelines and Table No. 1
with a 0.70 multiplier.

f- For gravity flow systems from a small number of houses, the maximum
length of a single trench should be no more than 30 m to avoid any
increased risk of poor distribution with longer trenches

g- For the distribution pipes following the distribution chamber, the

minimum internal diameter should be 100 mm for gravity systems; The
infiltration pipes used should have downward facing holes or slots and a
smooth internal inner surface.

h- The distribution pipes perforations should be dimensioned and spaced to

ensure that granular fill cannot enter the infiltration pipe and that effluent
can flow easily through the perforation without clogging. Slots in the
pipes used should have a minimum equivalent open area of 1000 mm2
per linear meter.

Excavate for the tank, allowing sufficient clearance for the minimum
concrete surround thickness, whilst also taking into account any shoring /
trench supports used. The depth of the excavation is determined by the inlet
and outlet pipe invert levels relative to the bottom of the tank, and allowing
for the minimum base thickness. Ground instability at formation level e.g.
running sand may necessitate over-excavation and stabilization with
hardcore or blinding concrete.

Maintain a completely dry excavation until the final pour of concrete has set.
Failure to do this may result in voids beneath the tank and subsequent tank
failure. Pour the concrete into the bottom of the excavation to form a level
and smooth base onto which the tank can sit.

Place the tank onto the concrete base (precast / prefabricated tanks), while
the concrete is still wet, and determine the correct orientation for the tank
inlet(s) and outlet(s), i.e. the higher pipe on the tank is to be connected to
your upstream (inlet) pipe-work. Connect and seal your pipe-work to the tank,
checking alignment, and ensure that there is an adequate and correct fall for
the pipe.

Fill tank with clean water to a depth of 300mm and recheck the pipe work
levels. Commence backfilling evenly around the tank with concrete ensuring
there are no voids, particularly at the bottom of the tank shell. Continue filling
the chambers with water whilst evenly backfilling with concrete ensuring that
the progressive water level is no more than 300mm above the concrete level.

Connect and seal turret extensions prior to completing the concrete

encasement of the main tank to the height. Allow this concrete to set. Using
appropriate formwork, continue pouring concrete around the tank
superstructure.

Complete backfill to ground level using free flowing material. Trim all access
turrets and prepare suitable footings for each manhole frame ensuring that
any loads on the covers are not transmitted to the tank access turrets or
access extensions, if fitted.

3.2 INSPECTION

The Septic Tank installation shall be accessible for inspection by ADSSC

nominated representative at any time.

a) Water-tightness of the tank shall be tested on site and after installation,

by filling with water and shall be hold for 24 hours.

b) Non-buoyancy in high groundwater areas or conditions.

c) Leak-proof nature of the service access (es), access ports, risers, lids,
and covers.

d) Methods to secure the lids, covers and vents from inappropriate or

unapproved access.

e) Methods of venting provided by the design and the installation. Venting

should exhaust above the roof line of the building.

f) Impervious surfaces around the access ports, equipment and methods

for cleaning sewage spills.

g) System components shall be properly identified as to the manufacturer.

Septic tanks or other primary systems shall have the rated capacity
permanently marked on the unit.

h) Septic tanks or other primary systems shall be installed on dry, level,

well-compacted soil.

i) If design is predicated on soil tests, the system shall be installed at the

same location and depth as the tested area.

3.3 TESTING.

(1) Septic tanks or other primary components shall be filled with potable water to
flow line prior to requesting inspection. All seams or joints shall be left
exposed (except the bottom), and the tank shall remain water-tight.

(2) A flow test shall be performed through the system to the point of effluent
disposal. All lines and components shall be water-tight. Capacities, required
air space, and fittings shall be in accordance with the provisions set forth in
this specification.

(3) Water test: for concrete septic tanks the loss of water measured after 30 min
shall be ≤ 0,1 litre per m2 of the internal wet surface of external walls. For
polyethylene and GRP septic tanks, no leakage shall be permitted. (Refer to
Table No. 5)

(4) Air permeability vacuum test: The septic tank shall be deemed watertight
when the pressure at the end of the test does not deviate by more than 10%
from the pressure at the start of the test as per Table No. 03

(5) Pneumatic pressure test: The septic tank shall be deemed watertight when :
(Refer to Table No. 5)

A)- Tested in the conditions given that the pneumatic pressure chosen for the
test does not decrease by more than 0,005 bar during the related test period,
condition to the septic tank shall be placed on a level surface and laterally
supported. One of the three pressures given in Table No. 3 shall be chosen
for the test. The chosen pneumatic pressure shall be gradually imposed on
the septic tank and held for 3 minutes to allow the septic tank to absorb the
deformation. After this, the variation of the pressure in the septic tank shall be
measured during the related test period defined in Table No. 3

B)- Tested in the conditions given that the pneumatic pressure 0,3 bar is
maintained during 180 seconds within limits of ± 10%, condition to the septic
tank shall be placed on a level surface and laterally supported. The septic

tank shall be subjected to an initial pneumatic pressure of 0,3 bar for at least
3 minutes.

(6) Hydraulic Efficiency : The extent to which the septic tank retains settling and
floating solids is determined by the hydraulic efficiency of the septic tank. As
soon as hydraulic efficiency requirements are defined, they shall be verified
using the test methods described in BS EN 12566-1 Annex B (normative).
Detail performance report shall be submitted for the approval of ADSSC /
Engineer.

3.4 TREATMENT EFFICIENCY

The plant shall demonstrate compliance with the wastewater treatment

efficiency performances and the related operational data declared by the
manufacturer, when tested according to Annex B of BS EN 12566 – 3. The
manufacturer’s declaration shall be expressed in terms of the treatment
efficiency ratios for all the major perimeters in relation to the daily load.

3.5 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

The manufacturer shall supply installation instructions with each septic tank
written in Arabic / English languages. These instructions shall contain data for
plant installation, pipe connections, commissioning and start-up procedures.

3.6 OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

The manufacturer shall provide with each septic tank comprehensive

operation and maintenance instructions, written in Arabic / English languages.
