Metal Non-Metal Compounds-If the name ends with an -ide, there will be
usually only two elements in the compound,
€g, sodium chloride (NaCl). The metal part is named fir
second, The non-metals name is changed to
@ compound.
So sodium chloride is made up of a sodium atom and a chlorine atom joined
together by a chemical bond, The onk
; ly exception to this rule is when the second
word is hydroxide (OH -), when there will be three elements.
'st and the non-metal part
-ide to show that it is now joined in

-ite and -ate
Tf the name ends in -ite or -ate there will be more than two elements in the
compound and one of them will be oxygen.
e.g. Copper Sulphate, (CuSO) Contains copper, sulphur and oxygen (the -ate
tells you)
The word endings -ate and -ite don't mean exactly the same thing. For example
sodium sulphate and sodium sulphite are different chemicals. The one with the
most oxygen in it's formula ends with -ate and the one with less oxygen ends in -
ite.
e.g. NaNOs is sodium nitrate and NaNO is sodium nitrite,

Sometimes two non-metal elements bond together to form different
a compounds like CO and CO2.
They both can't be carbon oxide so we need to give them different names. We
do this by giving them Greek prefixes:

Banks have an extremely large number of coins of various denominations. Counting
of such a large number of coins is a difficult job. So, in bank, they weigh coins,
rather than count them. The bank people know that a fixed number of a particular
coin will always have the same. This means that from mass of a particular type of
coin, they can find the number of coins
Thus, bank people link the mass of coins to the number of coins present,
> Now design a similar unit for yourself, that can reduce your workload.

AABALUIAMNIAIAPAPPONONANDHHHONNN DNSGram atomic mass or gram molecular mass also represents molar mass of the
substance.
The mass of 1 mole of a substance is called molar mass of the substance.
1 mole = 6.022 x 10°° particles = Gram atomic mass (or gram molecular mass)
Some important formulae ~
