Laboratory Activity no. 2 HEATING WITH THE BUNSEN BURNER

I. Objectives
a. Determine the use of each part of the Bunsen burner, draw and label its part.
b. Enumerate the parts and give its function.
c. Differentiate the luminous flame from nonluminous flame.
d. Develop skill in manipulating the Bunsen burner.

II. Pre-Laboratory Questions

a. Answer the Wh- questions about the Bunsen burner.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
b. Why the nozzle hole is very much smaller than the gas inlet?

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
c. Illustrate a Bunsen burner and label its parts. Note especially the gas inlet and the nozzle hole or gas speed in
the base of the burner.

III. Materials and Apparatus

2 pcs. ½ index card Bunsen Burner Crucible Tongs
Evaporating Dish Match
IV. Procedures
a. Reassemble the Burner
i. Close the air holes entirely at the base of the burner. Note that the air holes can be opened and closed.
b. Lighting a Bunsen Burner
i. Light a match and hold it near the tip of the barrel.
ii. Turn the gas outlet.
iii. Adjust the gas intake to get a 2-inch high flame.
iv. What influence does this operation and the gas intake have to get proper flame?

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
c. Close the air holes of the burner.
i. Note and describe the characteristics of this luminous flame.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
d. Using tongs, hold an evaporating dish in the luminous flame until it becomes black.
i. What is the name of the black substance deposited on the surface of the evaporating dish?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
ii. What makes a flame luminous?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

e. Adjust the air holes so that you have a blue or colorless flame. Note: The burner should operate quietly. With
too much air, the flame may burn inside the burner tube or blow itself off. With too little gas, the flame may
burn at the base and produce a noisy sound. If this happens, turn off the gas immediately and do not touch the
barrel.
f. Using a tongs, hold an evaporating dish in the non-luminous flame.
i. Describe the effect of the non-luminous flame on the dish.

g. Wet a piece of index card (do not soak) and insert vertically in the center of the flame so that the bottom of the
index card touches the barrel head until the frying pattern begins to form on the card. Do not wait until the card
burns.
i. What part of the flame is the hottest? The coolest?

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ii. Draw the sketch of the index card showing the drying pattern.
h. Take 2 matchsticks and quickly insert the head just above barrel into the center of the inner cone and tip of the
inner cone.
i. Why does it take some time before the match ignited?
i. Turn off the gas cock. NOTE:
i. Never blow out a gas flame.
ii. If you are not using the flame, turn the gas off by means of the gas cock.
iii. Never disconnect the tubing from the gas cock without first turning the gas off.
iv. Always make sure that the gas cock is closed when the gas is not connected in the burner. Some gases
are poisonous.
j. Disconnect the tubing from the gas cock and return it to the burner.
