INTRODUCTION

This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its setting. It includes the
background of the study, the statement of the problem, significance of the study, and
scope and delimitation of the study.

Background of the Study

Information and communication technologies (ICT) is defined as a diverse set

of technological tools and resources used to transmit, store, create, share or
exchange information. These technological tools and resources include computers,
the Internet (websites, blogs and emails), live broadcasting technologies (radio,
television and webcasting), recorded broadcasting technologies (podcasting, audio
and video players, and storage devices) and telephony (fixed or mobile, satellite,
visio/video-conferencing, etc.). Information and communication technology (ICT) has
accelerated the growth of the global economy and improved the quality life of the
world’s inhabitants. ICT has brought new ways of creating livelihoods for people. The
diffusion of ICT has also increased year by year and made it possible to reduce
poverty. The opportunities created by ICT also may eventually decrease the
“distance” between countries in many other ways. Because access to ICT plays a
key role in defining the global digital divide, it is important to study how the ICT gaps
among countries have changed. People all over the world rely on communication
technologies and computers every day to do their work. You’ll get to help by making
things, applying what you know, and what you’ve learned. Your skills can be put to
good use so that information can reach not just the world wide web, but the whole
wide world. ICT students gain knowledge and skills needed to effectively apply, use
and manage technology when solving problems specifically related to information
and communication. Classes provide a human and organizational focus on
technology–teaching students how to be effective users of technology. Vance
(2017).
Under the study of Information and communication technologies (ICT), is the study of
computer system servicing (CSS). Computer System Servicing (CSS) is a vocational
program that teaches students how to install, configure and maintain computer
systems and networks. It develops students’ skills in diagnosis and troubleshooting
of computer systems, as well as in the performance of computer operations. The
program enhances a student’s ability in basic computer application programs,
Windows installation and PC software and hardware support. Also covered in the
program are simple programming and creation of budget projections based on
departmental needs. This course is designed to develop knowledge, skills, and
attitudes of a Computer Service Technician in accordance with industry standards. It
covers basic and common competencies such as installing, maintaining, configuring,
and diagnosing computer systems and networks. Nanci (2019). This program trains
the students to install, troubleshoot, repair and maintain personal- computer systems
and peripherals. A student is also expected to upgrade hardware and. software,
mass-assemble or customize personal-computer units and may recondition old PC.
units. The Computer System Servicing course will prepare you on how to deal with
problems you may encounter when servicing Personal Computers. Get in-depth
theoretical and practical knowledge of computer hardware necessary for
troubleshooting a variety of hardware, software, and network system problems. The
computer system servicing qualification consists of competencies that must possess
to enable to install and configure computers systems, set-up computer networks and
servers and to maintain and repair computer systems and networks. Computer
System Servicing (CSS) is a vocational program that teaches students how to install,
configure and maintain computer systems and networks. Computer maintenance is
very important for keeping your computer running smoothly. A computer which is left
untreated, can accumulate dust and debris, buildup of unused apps and files.
Additionally, your computer may get infected with virus or malware if your antivirus is
not updated. Lloyd (2019). Computer system servicing (CSS) plays a crucial role in
education by ensuring the smooth functioning and optimal performance of computer
systems used in educational institutions. CSS encompasses a range of activities
aimed at maintaining, repairing, and upgrading computer hardware, software, and
networks.

Statement of the Problem

To determine the impact of computer system servicing subject on skill development

of ICT students at Pantalan Senior Highschool, the researchers can formulate
research questions that will guide their study and help them gather evidence and
understanding. Here are few possible research questions:

1. What are the struggles of ICT students facing in studying CSS subject?

2. In what ways does the learner's skills on computers affect ICT students
performance on CSS subject?

3. What are the hindrances that ICT students face when they're lack of
understanding in basic computer components and their functions?

4. How would the students rate their own skill levels in the study of computer system
servicing?

5. What is the impact of computer system servicing on skill development of ICT

students at Pantalan Senior Highschool?

Significance of the Study

The result of the study will be beneficial to the following:

Pantalan Senior Highschool. This study can help Pantalan Senior High

School to gain acknowledgement to be as its setting where in this school it conducts

this research.

CSS Teachers. The result of this study can provide them new information and new
learning strategies to be able to teach the students that CSS are important specially
in ICT students.

ICT Students. This study can help the ICT students to gain more knowledge about
CSS subject.

Future Researchers. The result of this study could be a basis for their future
research about computer system servicing (CSS).

Scope and Delimitation

This study focused on the effectiveness of knowing the impact of computer system
servicing subject on developing skills of ICT students at Pantalan Senior Highschool.

This study was delimited to Senior High School ICT Students of Pantalan
Senior Highschool who are officially enrolled for the whole semester of school year
2023-2024.
