 Select Wizard>Setup>Start to enter the setup wizard.
 Select Group Mode>PA Phased Array to configure the group on phased array
connector.
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm –Setup Wizard
 Select Application > Corrosion. This will enable the corrosion displays and readings
and short cut the setup process.
 Select Next.
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm –Setup Wizard cont.
 The HydroForm probe is automatically detected by the software.
 Select the SI4 family of wedges then select either the standard or tall HydroForm
wedge from the data base.
 Select Next.
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm –Setup Wizard cont.
 Enter an element quantity of 4. This is sufficient for most inspections up to
approximately 30mm in thickness and provides maximum coverage for the 64
element probe. As the aperture is increased, the coverage is decreased.
 Select first element 1, last element 64, and element step of 1 element.
 Select Next.
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm –Setup Wizard cont.
 Select a focus depth of 4mm. With only 4 elements in the aperture focus ability is
minimum and is most useful for shallow readings.
 The HydroForm is a single probe, single group inspection and does not require probe
skew change or modification to the scan and index offsets.
 Accept defaults and select Generate.
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – UT Configuration
 After completion of the setup wizard select >UT>General and adjust the UT gain so
that the water to component interface signal at approximately 0mm is >100%
amplitude.
 It is a normal condition that the interface signal is not straight prior to setting the
synchronization gate.
 Set the UT start at -5mm
and the UT range so
that 2 back walls are Interface signal Water column in HydroForm
visible.

OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – UT Configuration cont.
 Select UT>Pulser and set the voltage to high.
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – UT Configuration cont.
 Select UT>Receiver>Filter and select the filter closest to the probe frequency.
 Leave the video filter on.
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Gate Configuration – I Gate Synchronization
 Select Gate\Alarm>Gate>Gate I>Position and position the yellow I gate over the
interface signal as below.
 The I gate synchronization is similar to an immersion tank feature where the A-scan
is automatically set to 0mm on the UT dynamically based on the interface signal.
 Also called a “Floating
gate”.

OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Gate Configuration – I Gate Synchronization
 Select Gate\Alarm>Gate>Gate I>Mode and change A-Scan Synchronization to I/.
 The yellow I gate will disappear because it is not a dynamic floating gate.
 The interface is now straightened across the probe and will result in a consistent
accurate thickness reading regardless of the probe orientation and water column
distance to the pipe.

OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Gate Configuration – I Gate Synchronization
 Adjust the UT start again so that only a few mm of the water column are visible in the
S-scan. (-2mm below)
 This is necessary so bubbles in the water column can be seen and removed when
necessary as they will interfere with good inspection results and look like small pits.

OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Gate Configuration – I Gate Synchronization
 The water column must be free of bubbles for best inspection results. Proper water
pump that does not induce air into the system with good pressure and flow rate are
essential to prevent bubbles in the water column and allow smooth scanning.

OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Gate Configuration – I Gate Synchronization
 At this point the A-scan and S-scan should look similar to below.
 The interface signal is straight, synchronized on the I gate, and the water column free
of bubbles.
 The first and second back walls are visible at low amplitude.

OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – TCG Creation
 A manual TCG will be used to increase the amplitude of the back wall signals as
opposed to increasing the general gain.
 If the general gain is increased it will also increase the size of the interface signal and
reduce near surface resolution for thin components or pitting near the surface.

OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – TCG Creation cont.
 Select >Sizing>Type:TCG>Curve Setup.
 Move the position of existing TCG point 1 from 0mm to approximately 5mm. The
white point should be outside the interface signal on the A-scan.
 The intent is to increase the amplitude of the back walls without affecting the
interface signal.
 Select Add to create
TCG point #2.

OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – TCG Creation cont.
 Enter the position of back wall 1 (9mm below) and increase the gain so that back wall
1 is >100% amplitude.
 The amplitude of the back wall should increase without affecting the amplitude of the
interface signal for the I gate.
 Select Add to create
TCG point #3.

OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – TCG Creation cont.
 Enter the position of back wall 2 (17mm below) and increase the gain so that back
wall 2 is >100% amplitude.
 The amplitude of back wall 2 should increase without affecting the amplitude of back
wall 1 or the interface signal for the I gate.

OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Detection Gate Configuration
 Set gate A start as close to the interface signal as possible without touching and
ensure sufficient width to cover the first back wall. This may require modification in
analysis mode or when the scanner starts moving.
 Set gate B over the second back wall as pictured below.
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Detection Gate Configuration
 Change the peak selection of gate A and gate B to first peak edge mode as below.
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Thickness Reading Configuration
 Select >Gate>Thickness>Source and change the thickness reading source to A/-I/.
 How the thickness reading is calculated is determined based on this parameter.
 T = Thickness for current A-scan and data point.
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Thickness Reading Configuration
 Enter 2mm for the minimum thickness. This may be adjusted prior to inspection or in
in analysis mode based on the interface signal and surface condition.
 Enter the nominal pipe thickness for maximum. (10mm below)
 This range will limit the T thickness reading so invalid readings are not displayed or
evaluated.
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – A-S-C Layout
 Select the A-S-C layout from the title bar to display the position C-scan.
 The thickness C-scan color pixel is determined by the thickness reading for each A-
scan based on the gate logic selected in previous step.
 Readings are covered in detail in the analysis section of this training.

Thickness C-scan
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Inspection Configuration One Line Scan
 Select >Scan>Inspection>Scan>Encoder 1.
 This will change the inspection from a time based inspection to an encoded
inspection and the clock icon in the OmniScan notification area will change from a
clock to a mechanical wheel.

Thickness C-scan
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Inspection Configuration One Line Scan
 Select >Scan>Encoder>Resolution and enter the resolution of the encoder.
 If the encoder resolution is not known it can be verified or calibrated using the
calibration wizard in >Wizard>Calibration>Type:Encoder>Start.

Thickness C-scan
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Inspection Configuration One Line Scan
 Select >Scan>Area and enter the scan start and end. This will define the length of
the C-scan for the one line scan.
 The software will not allow a C-scan length to be created that will result in exceeding
the 300 Megabyte file size limit under current configuration.

Thickness C-scan
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Inspection Configuration One Line Scan
 The inspection resolution is the interval at which all A-scans are recorded and is
normally defined in the corrosion procedure or work instruction.
 Use 1mm or increase to 2mm if a larger C-scan is needed. This parameter is directly
related to scanner speed and file size.

Thickness C-scan
OmniScan SX MX2 HydroForm – Inspection Configuration One Line Scan
 The OmniScan setup for the HydroForm inspection is now complete. Save the Ops
file and continue to the acquisition section.
