Wall Finishing Materials

Course Level: Level Two – Course Code: ARC 233 - ARE 233
Course Title: Building Construction (3)

Wall finishes are used to increase a wall’s

durability, sound absorption, light reflectance, or
appearance.
Some wall finishes are an integral part of a wall’s
material structure, some are separate layers attached
to the frame of a wall, and still others are thin
coatings or coverings that are applied over a wall
surface. In addition to a esthetic factors such as
color, texture, and pattern, there are functional and
economic considerations in selecting a wall material
and finish.
Wall finishing can be divided to two main
categories:
• Plaster and painting finishing.
• Cladding finishing.

Plaster and Painting Finishing

Course Level: Level Two – Course Code: ARC 233 - ARE 233
Course Title: Building Construction (3)

Plaster is a soft mixture of sand and cement and

sometimes lime with water, for spreading on walls,
ceilings, or other structures, to form a smooth hard
surface when dried.
Plastering is done to achieve the following
objects:
1. To protect the external surfaces against
penetration of rainwater and other atmospheric
agencies.
2. To give smooth surface in which dust and dirt
cannot lodge.
3. To give decorative effect.
4. To protect surfaces against vermin.
5. To conceal interior materials or defective
workmanship.

Sand Cement Plaster
Course Title: Building Construction (3)

Sand cement plaster is a composition of cement,

water, and sand; it is applied in a pasty form to the
surfaces of walls or ceilings and allowed to harden
and dry. Plaster is a durable, relatively lightweight,
and fire-resistant material that can be used on any
wall or ceiling surface.
The final appearance of a plaster surface depends
on both its texture and its finish. It is usually
troweled to produce a smooth, nonporous finish.
Plaster may have one or more integral colors or
may be painted either a single color or with multiple
layers of paints and glazes. Smooth finishes will
accept textile or paper wall coverings.

Sand Cement Plaster

The total thickness of a sand cement plaster finish

is from 15 to 20 mm in internal plaster and from 20
to 30 mm in external plaster.
Plaster is applied in either two or three layers, the
number of which depends on the type and strength
of base used. Two-coat plaster uses a base coat
followed by a finish coat.

Sand Cement Plaster

Three coat plaster is applied in three successive

coats, a scratch coat followed by a brown coat and a
finish coat.
• The scratch coat is the first coat in three coat
plaster. It must adhere firmly to the lath and
provide a better bond for the brown coat.
• The brown coat is a roughly finished, leveling
coat of plaster coat plaster or the base coat applied
over a gypsum lath or masonry.
• The finish coat of plaster serves as the finished
surface or as a base for decoration.

Lime Plaster

Lime plaster is a mix mortar of Lime stone

powder, white cement, lime, sand, and gypsum used
as a finish coat to give building the appearance of
natural stones.
In it’s mortar more sand will give a harder finish
and is more suitable for open textured float finishes,
more lime will give a softer surface but allows it to
be polished smoother. For standard work, a mix of
one to one is suitable.
Lime plaster is a continuous wall coating for
external and internal surfaces and can be applied as a
finish coat plaster based on traditional brown coat.

Granulite Plaster

Granulite is a ready-mix paste mortar, ready to be

applied directly from the container.
The filling consists of natural blended colored
stones gives the effect of natural color, which will
not be affected by ultraviolet, non sag mortar, easy
for application, excellent adhesion to substrate, and
excellent washability.
Granulite is a continuous wall coating for external
and internal surfaces and can be applied as a finish
coat plaster based on traditional brown coat.

Artificial Stone Plaster

Artificial stone plaster is ready mix dry powder

consist of sand, limestone powder, and white
cement; just add water to be applied as stone texture
plaster that excellent adhesion to substrate, high
strength due to its low water ratio, non-sag mortar,
easy for application by troweling.
Artificial stone plaster is a continuous wall
coating for external and internal surface sand can be
applied as a finish coat plaster based on traditional
brown coat.

based on a tough acrylic resin, reinforced with mica
and silica providing an outstanding water resistant
and durable coating that has been specifically
formulated to withstand the elements over many
years.
This plaster gives a beautiful scratched decorative
finish which looks good both indoors and outdoors.
Graffito plaster is a continuous wall coating for
external and internal surfaces and can be applied as a
finish coat plaster based on traditional brown coat.
