Wall Finishing Materials

Course Level: Level Two – Course Code: ARC 233 - ARE 233
Course Title: Building Construction (3)

Wall finishes are used to increase a wall’s

durability, sound absorption, light reflectance, or
appearance.
Some wall finishes are an integral part of a wall’s
material structure, some are separate layers attached
to the frame of a wall, and still others are thin
coatings or coverings that are applied over a wall
surface. In addition to a esthetic factors such as
color, texture, and pattern, there are functional and
economic considerations in selecting a wall material
and finish.
Wall finishing can be divided to two main
categories:
• Plaster and painting finishing.
• Cladding finishing.

Walls Cladding Systems

Course Title: Building Construction (3)

Wall cladding means that the exterior and interior

walls of a building is covered with panels of a
different material than the cover-up.
To maintain the structure, frame and exterior
walls of a building, certain panel systems are
applied.
The panels are installed over other materials used
in construction. These systems are also called
cladding systems and are a part of the composite of
the building.
Different cladding systems will be used for
different buildings or projects. Any architectural
challenge can be solved with a fitting cladding
system solution.

Importance of Walls Cladding Systems

Course Title: Building Construction (3)

Cladding can serve both a decorative and a

functional purpose:
• It is used to complement the architectural style of
the building.
• Offering protection from rain, wind, snow, and
other outside elements.
• Add insulation to the structure while minimizing
sound transmission through the walls.
• Control the infiltration of weather elements.
• Durable, aesthetically, and pleasing appearance.
• Capacity for cleaning in dusty, polluted or vandal
prone environments.

Methods of Walls Cladding

Direct Adhered: This is one of the most common

methods. It is thinner, less expensive, and doesn't
require any onsite drilling.

Mechanical Bonding: This method involves

fixed or embedded anchors or ties being used to
attach the cladding to the surface.

Systems of Walls Cladding

Attached System

Attached system has exterior and interior cladding

attached directly to structural frame in large panels
which span one or more stories or bays such as:
precast concrete or steel-stud frames welded or
bolted to attachments built into the structural frame.
Attached system primary advantage is ability to
fully insulate the exterior walls and protect the
structural frame from deteriorating effects of
weather.

Curtain Wall System

Curtain wall system is similar to attached system

except it is attached to the structural frame with clip
angles or sub-framing such as: metal or glass walls
which enclose most modern skyscrapers, natural
stones and light, weight precast panels.
Curtain wall system primary advantage is
standard design requiring less time in pre-
construction and manufacturing.

Types of Walls Cladding Systems

Stone, Marble, and Granite Cladding
Course Title: Building Construction (3)

Stone has been a staple of building materials since

the beginning of time. The major benefits of stone
cladding are its strength, durability and aesthetic
appeal.
With a myriad of possibilities that can enhance the
look of any exterior or interior, having a sound
understanding of stone cladding is paramount to
ensuring proper usage.
Stone, marble, and granite cladding features:
• Achieve strength, durability and aesthetic appeal.
• Brings a feel of natural style and elegance.
• Environmentally friendly materials.
• Expensive and labor intensive.

Types of Walls Cladding Systems

Ceramic and Mosaic Cladding
Course Title: Building Construction (3)

Ceramic and mosaic cladding today's is preferred

because it protects the structures from external
factors, preserves the internal climate, does not want
periodic maintenance, and is natural, durable and
aesthetic.
Ceramic and Mosaic Cladding features:
• Ceramic cladding resists changes in temperature
and atmospheric attack from pollution, acid rain,
and smog.
• Fixed to the buildings by an adhesive.
• Available in different colors and style.
• Long lasting.
• Less maintenance needing.
