3 Preferences
Analogous to its predecessor models (5xxi and 600i series), the 700i still uses the unique and
patented transport system in the form of a motor driven cassette in passport size. This cassette
attaches the passport and is itself transported by a steel rope. The big advantage is, that no
roller system is required to drive the passport directly!

No kind of roller system will ever work as perfectly and all of them will additional lose their
friction with the time. This is the reason, that the DILETTA transport mechanism is completely
maintanance free apart from a little silicon spray in a two years interval without opening any
screw!

An additional advantage of this printer compared with any others on the market is its modular
construction, which allows a fast and easy service for any technician.

8 Additional Equipment
The DILETTA 700i is available with the following additional equipment.

8.1 Camera

A camera system may be already installed inside the printer. This camera together with the
according software is responsible for:

• Exact positioning of the printed data, especially if a passport with preprinted texts or lines
has to be printed. The position of such preprinted texts or lines can vary extremely from
passport to passport or from passport series to series.

In this case each text or image printed by the printer has to be centered between the existing
lines or preprinted texts.

This is the job of the camera and the according software, which recognizes any remarkable,
already imprinted text or sign and uses the exact vertical and horizontal positioning of it for
zero position of each following printjob. Texts are now printed
exactly in the middle between two lines or preprinted texts.

• Reading a preprinted passport number or text in order to be transmitted to the PC. Such
data can be used in order to assure printing the image into the booklet with the according
preprinted passport number, or to pick out of a data base automatically the corresponding
printjob for each booklet with preprinted passport number.

8.2 RFID

A RFID system may already be installed inside the printer. The system contains an electronic
board with internal or external antenna, a USB cable to the printer’s USB HUB and the
driver.

Such a RFID system is usually used to read and write data via radio frequency, stored on a
contactless chip, integrated in the passport cover. To read and write data to the chip you may
require a SDK or software and keys corresponding to the chip and operation system installed
inside of the passport.

NOTE: SDK and keys are NOT part of the DILETTA shipment.

Chip encoding can be done before, after or during1) the print job.

There are two versions of the RFID system:

• Stationary RFID System

• Moveable RFID System (RFIDplus)

1) only RFIDplus system

DILETTA 700i Service Manual Page 7

Stationary RFID System

The printer’s RFID electronic board including antenna can be placed stationary in a grey
plastic holder above the sled. In this case the passport page (cover) with the implemented
RFID chip and its own antenna inside must be inserted first into the sled (31 / A). That means,
that the cover page with RFID chip inside has to be placed underneath the grey plastic holder!

Movable RFID System (RFIDplus)

The RFID module (electronic board and/or antenna) can be integrated inside the printer’s
passport sled (31 / A). It is mounted either underneath the grey front or back plastic sheet of
the passport sled. This location depends on customer’s requirement due to passports with
different located RFID chips in the cover. In both cases the whole RFID system is transported
vertically together with the passport.

The advantage of the RFIDplus system compared to a stationary system is the reading or
writing of data during the printjob - without any loss of time.

8.3 Barcode Reader

The DILETTA 700i can optional be equipped with an integrated barcode reader system. The
reader can be placed on several positions inside the printer in order to detect barcodes printed
on inner pages as well as barcodes on the outside of the cover (reader placed underneath the
inserted passport).

Using barcodes has the big advantage to avoid reading errors, because most barcodes contain
checksums for an assured reading. Usually the barcode is placed at the opposite side of the
data page and contains only the passport number. The reader detects the barcode (passport
number) and the data is transmitted to the PC. With the help of the detected passport number,
the software application is now able to include this number to the printjob, so that the printer
prints the correct number on the data page.

Another possibility is to store the passport number together with the already existing data of
the passport bearer in a database.

8.4 OCR Reader

Optionally the integrated barcode reader can be upgraded to read also printed single OCR
lines. The system supports OCR-A, OCR-B and E-13B MICR fonts.

DILETTA 700i Service Manual Page 8

8.4 USB HUB

In case your printer is equipped with Camera, RFID System, Barcode Reader and/or OCR
Reader them your printer is equipped with an integrated USB HUB (28 / 8). This USB HUB
is implemented at the backside of the printer instead of the usual USB adapter (28 / 9).

The USB HUB is a powered hub which only works when a supply voltage of 5V is connected
(printer switched ON).

8.5 UV Colours

The 700i is also available with invisible UV colours. UV printing is a security feature of mo-
dern passports. Printed texts and images are only visible with the help of a special UV light.
Best is to use a light in the range of 365nm or 254nm.

Images printed on bleached white plain paper are very badly visible. In case you don’t have
original passports for testing you can use photo glossy paper, cut it in the size of an opened
passport and put it inside the sled (31 / A) on top of any old passport.

Never replace installed UV ink tanks against conventional colour tanks! In case you want to
convert an UV printer into a printer with conventional colours or vice versa, please contact
us.

9.1 Testing the printer without housing

11 12

11 In case you have to test the printer without housing take care to close switch (K).

12 About ten seconds after switching the printer on, the carriage unit (N) moves underneath the
metal cover (O). This procedere is necessary in order to recognize, if all ink tanks are well
installed, at the right place and still filled with enough ink. Underneath the metal covering are
two light sensible sensors for managing these measurements.
In a very bright area (especially in direct sun light) it can happen, that the carriage unit stops
underneath the metal covering and the two panel LED’s (orange and green) are blinking 19
times alternately until they start from the beginning. Although the sensors are masked by the
metal covering this error may happen in direct sunlight or a bright area!
In this case switch the printer off, cover the sensors much better and switch it on again.

10 Most important units

10.1 Power Supply

13 14

13 / 14 The input range of the power supply unit (1) is 110V - 240V AC and 50/60Hz.
The output potentials depend due to a switched on or a switched off printer.

The following table provides the different voltages to be measured in case of a well working
power supply under the conditions switched on and switched off.

Colour of cable Printer switched off Printer switched on Signal

Red (one cable) Approx. 7V Approx. 24V Out

Orange (two cables) Approx. 9V Approx. 32V Out

White (one cable) Approx. 0V Approx. 3,3V In

Blue (two cables) Ground Ground --

10.2 Main Frame

15 16

15 / 16 The main frame unit (2) is mainly responsible for the vertical transport of the passport via the
movable sled. Each movement of the installed vertical (LF) motor is controlled via LF-encoder
disk and LF-encoder sensor. Also the presence of an inserted passport is sensed in the
mainframe unit. Additional equipment like RFID and/or camera can be installed to the main
frame unit.

DILETTA 700i Service Manual Page 12

10.3 Carriage Unit

17 18

17 / 18 The carriage unit (3) is responsible for all horizontal movements during printing or cleaning
procedures. All horizontal movements of the external horizontal (CR) motor are controlled via
CR-encoder stripe and CR-encoder sensor. The CR-encoder sensor is installed inside the
carriage unit. One print head and four ink tanks can be installed by the user.

10.4 Purge Unit

19 20

19 / 20 The purge unit (4) cleans the print head intermittently or on command of the user and caps it
against drying up about one minute after a print job is finished.

10.5 Ink Tank Sensor Unit

21 22

21 / 22 The ink tank sensor unit (5) with two different implemented sensors is responsible for
recognizing if all tanks are well installed (electric contact), at the right place (alternating)
and still filled with enough ink.
The sensors are very light sensitive and will cause an error message in case the printer is used
without housing or without any covering in a bright area, like in direct sun! For testing the
printer without housing take care to cover the sensor unit against light.
DILETTA 700i Service Manual Page 13

10.6 Control Board

23 24

23 / 24 The Control Board (6) is responsible for controlling all vertical movements of the sled with the
inserted passport. The presence of an inserted passport is additional indicated via a small
green LED. Optional equipment like camera or RFID -reader/writer can be powered via the
free quadripolar plugs.

10.7 Main Board

25 26

25 / 26 The Main Board (7) controlls all other functions of the printer. In case of replacing it please be
aware to check the waste ink felts inside the aluminium tub underneath the printer. If they are
more than around 15% full of waste ink they have to be replaced at the same time!
This is because the internal waste ink counter of a new main board is zero and a waste ink felt
already filled with more than 15% of waste ink may cause an ink leakage.

10.8 USB-Hub or USB Adapter

27 28

27 / 28 In case your printer is equipped with Camera, RFID or Barcode Reader a 5V powered
active USB Hub (8) is installed for uniting this equipment to one USB cable only.
Basic printers without any optional equipment are using a smaller USB Adapter (9).

10.9 Operation Panel

29 30

29 / 30 The panel unit (10) is used for switching on and off, for deleting printjobs, for resetting the
waste ink counter and for displaying different error messages via LED’s.

The switch for detecting an opened top cover as well as the two sensors from the ink tank
sensor unit (5) are looped through the panel unit. The panel unit is connected via a flat cable to
the main board.

11 General important information

11.1 Switching the printer on and off

Switching on

31 32

33 34

31 The sled (A) moves towards the most possible front position (B) and stops. This position is
the home position of the sled and should never be changed. Do never open the two screws

DILETTA 700i Service Manual Page 15

Strictly Confidential
which hold the metal angle for the front position!

33 To reach the home position, motor (C) is energized and turns the LF-encoder disk (D).
The LF-encoder sensor (E) underneath the metal cover detects the steps on the LF-encoder
disk (D) and transmitts them to the control board (24) via the yellow cable.
As soon as the sled (31 / A) is mechanical stopped by reaching the front position the LF-
encoder sensor (E) could not detect any new steps and the control board stops energizing the
motor (C) at home position.

Home position is very important for:

- printing each passport at the same start position (read also 8.1 - camera)
- recognizing the passort detection sensor (read also 11.5)

Possible problems regarding the home position of the sled:

It may happen, that the sled (31 / A) stops somewhere before reaching the mechanical blocked
and adjusted position (32 / B). The reason can be a lot of dust inside the rails (34 / F) or any
other possibility which makes the sled (31 / A) moving stiff.

Switching off

The printer should only be switched off by using its own power button! Do not switch off via
plug connector or any other external power interruption.
This is very important, because the purge unit (20) may not have the chance to cap the print
head against drying up, when you interrupt the power source. In this case the expensive print
head can dry up and may not be recovered by a cleaning process.

11.2 Inserting a passport

Preparing the passport

For a better handling while inserting, the booklet should be opened completely and should
also be shortly bend a little so that it will rest on a flat table without closing itself.

Direction of inserting

The data page of the passport has usually to be inserted first, so that the region with the MRZ
(machine readable zone) is placed at the back (inner) side of the sled (31 / A). This has the
advantage, that the positioning of each printed text is much more exactly than in case of
placing the passport vice versa.

Inaccuracies in positioning printed texts

Nevertheless occuring inaccuracies in positioning texts between any preprinted lines or

preprinted texts are mostly caused by differences in the production of the booklets itself and
not by the printer.

DILETTA 700i Service Manual Page 16

Strictly Confidential
Problems with differences in the booklet can only be solved by upgrading the printer with an
additional available camera system. Please refer also chapter 8.1.
The smarter way to avoid such problems is to print all texts, including lines on a passport
which is manufactured with a blank data page. In this case the printer needs no additional
camera and each printed image is perfectly positioned.

Pushing the passport inside the sled

The booklet must be pushed inside the sled (31 / A) until it blocks and it is impossible to push
it further.

35 36

35 / 36 A completely inserted passport activates the passport detection sensor (G) via lever (H).

36 Only when the passport is completely pushed inside the sled (31 / A) the lever (H) on the
backside of the sled can actuate (open or close) the passport detection sensor (G).

37

37 In case the passport is detected (lever 36 / H has closed passport detection sensor 35 / G) the
lowest of the four green LED’s (I) will shine permanently. The topmost green LED flashes all
the time.
Only when the green LED (I) shines the printer can perform a printjob!

Take care for your fingers, when you have already send a printjob, but the green LED was
not shining at this moment (no passport inside, passport not completely inside, passport detection
sensor not adjusted or any other reason).

As soon as you push a passport inside or adjust the sensor, so that the green LED
will shine, the sled will insert the passport immediately and may hurt you!

DILETTA 700i Service Manual Page 17

11.3 Vertical passport transport (LF)

The passport is inserted into a self opening and closing sled (31 / A). The sled attaches the
passport and is itself transported by a steel rope. It is sliding in two aluminium rails (34 / F).
The rails are adjusted exactly and should never be replaced! Cleaning and lubricating them
with Silicone spray once in a year is enough.
After switching the printer on and reaching its home position (refer chapter 11.1) the sled is
ready to transport an inserted passport (refer chapter 11.2) in order to perform a printjob.
Sending a printjob means, the main board (26) sends a predefined amount of small vertical
steps to be performed by the LF-motor (33 / C). The LF-encoder sensor (33 / E) detects
these steps on the turning LF-encoder disk (33 / D). When the whole amount of predefined
vertical steps have been performed, the sled (31 / A) stops shortly near by the back panel of
the printer.
Now the LF- motor gets another predefined amount of steps, this time in forward direction
and performs additional the data of the printjob.
Each vertical movement of the LF-motor is controlled via LF- encoder disk and LF- encoder
sensor.
To avoid vertical misalignment all mechanical parts must slide or rotate smooth-running.
The tension of the narrow belt between LF- motor and LF- encoder sensor should not be to
high but also not to less. In case of doubt test different adjustments and choose the adjustment
with no vertical misalignment.
Vertical misalignment can be recognized by printing the following testpage from the original
CD-ROM: 700i_Sample_Passport.PDF
Beside the usual printed datapage you can find several horizontal lines, printed alternately in
black and red colour.
The vertical positioning is well adjusted, when the distance between red lines and black lines
is about the same.
OK BAD
38 39

38 In case the lines are printed like this, the whole vertical mechanism is well adjusted.
Small differences in the distance between black and red lines are possible and will not affect
the print quality.

39 This picture shows that anything in the vertical mechanism makes the sled moving stiff.

40 41

DILETTA 700i Service Manual Page 18

Strictly Confidential

42

40 / 41 The reason for a stiff moving sled can be one of the belts (J / K) with to much tension, an
aluminium gearwheel (L / M) without axial backlash, or dirty and / or not lubricated aluminium
rails (34 / F).

42 Also the sled (31 / A) itself can be the reason. Underneath the sled are five yellow sliding
shoes (N and O). They are adjusted straight to the aluminium rails and should not be removed!
The separate one of them (O) is adjustable in horizontal direction (refer chapter 12.6).
This adjustment is in order to reduce the mechanical backlash of the four sliding shoes inside
the aluminium rails. In case its adjustment is to strong the sled moves stiff.

11.4 Automatic Distance Adjustment between print head and passport

Main adjustment

Each kind of ink jet printer needs an exactly adjusted distance between the print head and the
medium (passport) to be printed. This is necessary because the ink jet has to be focused in
order to reach smallest ink drops for best possible print quality.
The essential distance is adjusted by two red screws, left and right hand of the metal bar
which guides the carriage unit.
This adjustment should never be altered!
In case it is nevertheless necessary by any reason, please refer chapter 11.7.

Additional automatic adjustment

A passport printer compared to a usual printer for paper sheets has one more problem regarding
the distance. This problem is the media itself, the passport. Each passport is more or less
unequal compared to a usual paper sheet.
This fact brings along that the sensitive adjusted distance between print head and passport is
not the same for each area of the passport. The more you print in the middle of the complete
printable area the more the passport curves to the top. That means the distance between print
head and passport becomes more and more less to the middle of the passport. This affects
the print quality essential!

For this reason the printer is equipped with a mechanical motor driven clap (43 / R) which is
able to plane the passport during the print process. With the help of this mechanism the printer
is able to print in a consistent and best possible quality in each area of a passport. The following
pictures will explain the function and all other things to know about this very important unit of
the 700i.

DILETTA 700i Service Manual Page 19

Strictly Confidential

43 44

45

43 Depending on the directional movement of the passport (44 / U or 45 / U) the motor (P) turns
curve disk (Q) and lifts or sinks clap (R).

44 As soon as the sled (U) (with inserted passport or without) moves backwards inside the
printer the clap (R) is lifted about 2mm.
This is a very important and critical function which allows sled and passport to move below
the clap without touching or crashing.
Even in case of a non powered printer and pushing the sled with the fingers this feature has to
work properly.

45 After the sled (U) turns the direction from backwards to forward the clap (R) sinks down in
order to plane the passport for a consistent distance between print head and passport.

11.5 Adjusting the passport detection sensor

General Information

The passport detection sensor is responsible for recognizing if a passport is inserted into the
sled (31 / A) or not. If no passport is inserted, but a printjob is send nevertheless, the orange
error LED of the panel (30) blinks.
In order to perform this denied printjob, the passport can also be inserted afterwards.
Immediately after detection, the passport will be inserted automatically.
It is very important to put the passport completely inside until it blocks and it is
impossible to push it further.
The detection of the passport is done via the passport detection sensor (35 / G), which is
actuated by a small metal lever (36 / H) at the backside of the sled (31 / A).
In case the passport detection sensor is misplaced by any reason it must be adjusted in the
following way.

Adjustment Procedere

46 47

46 / 47 As long as the passport (A) has not been inserted completely the lower one of the four LED’s
(B) must be off.

48 49

48 / 49 When the passport (A) has been inserted completely the lower one of the four LED’s must
be on.

50 51

50 The lower LED (49 / B) has to shine already when the passport is around 1mm before
reaching the end where it stops!

51 For adjusting open screw (C) and move the underneath metal sheet with the attached passport
detection sensor in another position. Close the screw and check the new adjustment regarding
the 1mm clause of picture 50 and the LED.

Take care for your fingers, when you have already send a printjob, but the green LED was
not shining at this moment (no passport inside, passport not completely inside, passport detection
sensor not adjusted or any other reason).
As soon as you push a passport inside or adjust the sensor, so that the green LED will shine,
the sled will insert the passport immediately and may hurt you!

11.6 Purge Unit / Cleaning and Manual Capping

The purge unit (20) cleans the print head intermittently or on command of the user and caps
it against drying up about one minute after a print job is finished or when the printer is switched
off.

Cleaning

52

52 The purge unit cleans the print head by wiping it with the wiper section (A).
Furthermore the print head sprays ink inside the two ink collecting areas (B) during each
printing process. From there the ink is pumped into the waste ink felt inside the metal tub
underneath the printer.
The two ink collecting areas (B) are surrounded by frames of black gum lips. The complete
ink collection area together with the gum lips can be lifted upwards in order to cap the print
head against drying up and for locking the carriage unit.
The lower position is for unlocking the carriage unit for either enable the wiper or during a
print job.

Manual Capping

In case the printer is not able to cap the print head automatically by any reason it
is recommended to cap it manually in order to prevent it against drying up.

53 54

53 For manual capping only move the carriage unit with your fingers in a position of about
8mm ahead the right end.

54 Turn the big white plastic gearwheel (C, placed behind the main electronic board) towards the
front side of the printer.

55

55 Turn gear wheel (C) until the whole carriage unit lifts up for about 1mm.
At the moment it lifts up stop turning the gearwheel! The print head should now be capped
well.

11.7 Carriage Unit / Fixed Distance between print head and Passport

The carriage unit (18) contains the print head, the four ink tanks and the CR- encoder sensor.
It is connected to the main board via two flat cables and is driven via belt by the CR- motor.
The distance between carriage unit (installed print head) and the passport is the most critical
adjustment for receiving a good print quality!
This distance is perfectly adjusted and should never be modified.
In case it has to be adjusted by any reason please observe the following procedere as exactly
as possible!
The best possible print quality can only be reached in case the precision of your adjustment is
accurate to a tenth mm!

Adjustment

56 57

56 Absolutely essential for the adjustment is to have a calliper (A) with depth measurement tool
(B).

57 Move the sled (C) in about this position.

11.8 Replace Waste Ink Absorber / Reset Waste Ink Counter

Error Messages

Message 1 In case the orange LED of the panel blinks eight times the waste ink absorber in the
aluminium tub underneath the printer is almost full.
By pressing the Cancel button the user can proceed printing.
For continuous printing it is recommended to inform the service already now, and to
check the availability of new spare waste ink absorbers.

Message 2 In case the orange and the green LED’s both blink seven times alternately, the waste ink
absorber is completely full and it is impossible for the user to proceed printing.
Only resetting the waste ink amount counter allows to proceed printing.

A reset of this counter must come along with replacing the waste ink absorber at the
same time.
In case the replacement of the waste ink absorber is not done before or shortly after
resetting the waste ink counter you risk that leaking ink contaminates printer and
user’s environment.

the ink pump (pumping ink into print head) inside the purge unit (20).

71 The Passport Detection Sensor (L) is responsible for recognizing if a passport is inserted
or not. A printjob will not be performed, when the passport is not or not completely inserted
(refer 11.5).

72 73

72 The Ink Level Sensor (M) is responsible for detecting empty ink tanks so that the red
LED’s of the ink tanks can indicate that condition by four times blinking.

The Ink Tank Sensor (N) detects badly installed, wrong positioned or defective ink
tanks and indicates that via the red LED’s of the ink tanks.

73 A Temperature Sensor is implemented into the print head (O) in order to slow down the
print speed in case of overheating due to high ambient temperature and persistent using of the
printer at the same time.

Motors

74 75

74 The Purge Motor (P) drives the wiper section (cleaning print head) and the ink pump (pumping
ink into the print head) inside the purge unit (20) by rotating in two different directions.

The CR- Motor (Q) drives the carriage unit (18) with the print head inside in horizontal
direction.

11.10 Print Head / Print Head Alignment

76

Handling Precautions

Obey the following precautions when you handle print head.

Caution

• Never touch the electrical contacts (A) on a Print Head after printing. The metal parts may be
very hot and could cause burns.

• Always store print head and ink tanks in a safe location where they are out of the reach of
small children. If a child ingests ink accidentally, seek medical assistance immediately.

Important

• Avoid dropping print head and ink tanks and do not shake them unnecessarily. An ink leak
can stain the work area.

• The ink supply ports (B) & (C) of removed print head and ink tank contacts may be stained
with ink so handle them carefully. The ink could spill on your clothing and make stains that
cannot be removed.

• Do not unpack a print head until immediately before you install it. Also, after unpacking the
print head, install it promptly. If a print head is left unpacked, this could cause the quality of
printing to deteriorate.

• Never leave a print head removed from the printer for a long period (over quarter hour). This
could lead ink blockages and poor print performance.

General Information

76 Never touch the electronic contact plate (A). If necessary clean it carefully with a small amount
of contact cleaner.

Do also not touch the black nozzle area (B) as well as the nozzle area for the colours cyan,
magenta and yellow (C). Don’t clean the nozzle areas (B or C) manually.
In case it is impossible to cap the print head neither automatically, nor manually by any reason
it may dry up if the period is longer than about three hours.

Print head alignment

For receiving the best possible print quality each print head must be aligned via the printer
driver.
The print head of a new delivered or repaired printer is already aligned by DILETTA.
The print head alignment has to be performed by the user / technician when:

- a new print head is installed.

- a new main electronic board is installed
- the user is not satisfied with the print quality in general

Procedure

In order to perform the print head alignment please refer the original DILETTA 700i Operating
Instructions on page 27-29.

In case you have installed a new main board (26) the following additional procedure has to
be performed before aligning the print head!

77 78

77 / 1-3 Click Start (1) / Settings (2) / Printers and Faxes (3).

78 / 4-5 Right-click on the DILETTA 700i (4) printer icon and click Printer Preferences (5).

79 80

79 Click the Maintenance Tab (6) and then Custom Settings (7).

80 Click the checkbox (Align heads manually) and then Send (9). Confirm with OK.

Without sending (Align heads manually) it is not possible to perform the print head
alignment like described in the original DILETTA 700i operating instructions.
But the procedure is only necessary in case you install a new main electronic board.

11.11 Ink Tanks

All necessary information regarding the ink tanks can be found in the original DILETTA 700i
Operating Instructions.
Never use others than the original DILETTA ink tanks!
Never install DILETTA UV ink tanks, in case your printer was equipped with usual ink before
or vice versa.

11.12 Frequent Service

Waste Ink Absorber (65 / B)

The waste ink absorber underneath the printer has to be replaced after a certain amount of ink
has been consumed during the different automatic and manual cleaning procedures.
An internal counter adds the different amounts and sends a specific error message via the two
panel LED’s (refer 11.8). The period of replacing the absorber depends on the rate of using
the printer and can not be forecasted.

Print Head (73 / O)

Each print head uses six nozzles rows for the different colours. The nozzles are heated for
firing out the ink drops. Due to the persistent heating a kind of soot arises inside the nozzles
and the internal diameter becomes smaller with the time. This fact affects the print quality
more and more, so that the print head should be replaced after about 24.000 passports.

DILETTA 700i Service Manual Page 31

Purge Unit (20)

The purge unit is responsible for:

- cleaning the print head with a wiper

- capping it against drying up
- pumping ink inside the print head during each print head cleaning procedure

52 The capping function is very important for the print head and will only work well, if the two ink
collecting areas (52 / B), surrounded by frames of black gum lips are clean.
Especially the black gum lips for capping the print head may be contaminated by crusts of old
dried up ink.
In this case the print head can not be capped well against outer air and may also dry up.
To avoid this problem clean the black gum lips with some alcohol so that they are clean and
smooth.
After about 50.000 printed passports it is recommended to replace the purge unit against a
new one.

Rails (34 / F)

The aluminium rails for vertical guidance of the sled (31 / A) should be cleaned from time to
time and then treated with silicon spray.
Never use anything else, like grease or similar!

LF-, CR- and Purge- Encoder Disks / Film

81 82

83

81 - 83 The LF- Encoder disk (A), the Purge- Encoder disk (C), as well as the CR- Encoder band
(B) should be cleaned once in a year, or in case they have collected extreme amounts of ink
dust or spots due to a frequently used printer.

Plastic Rollers

84

84 The yellow plastic rollers (D) may have to be replaced after two years in case of a frequently
used printer.(Refer 13.2).

11.13 Printer Driver Adjustments

Use only the original DILETTA 700i printer driver!

The printer driver should be adjusted to High in the menu item Print Quality.
The time for printing one data page is between 24 and 28 seconds in this adjustment.
Using Standard is not recommended, because the quality is not high enough for passport
issuing.
Please find more information regarding the printer driver adjustments in the original DILETTA
700i operating instructions.

12 Print Quality (Most Important Facts in Summarize)

12.1 Print Head Alignment

Print head alignment is an important adjustment for receiving the best possible print quality.
Please refer chapter 11.10 for more information.

12.2 Distance between Print Head and Passport

The most critical adjustment regarding the print quality is the distance between the print head
and the passport. Please read chapters 11.4 as well as chapter 11.7.

12.3 Print Head

The print head itself may also influence the print quality substantial. Please refer chapter 11.12
- print head.

12.4 LF (Vertical) Alignment

Please refer chapter 11.3.

12.5 Drive Belts, Cogwheels etc.

Take care, that all the cogwheels and belts within the vertical transport system are well fixed
or have enough tension. Please read also chapter 11.3, especilly regarding the tension of the
belts.

12.6 Mechanical Backlash inside the rails

The sled (31 / A) is sliding vertically inside the two aluminium rails (34 / F). It should move
smoothly, but at the same time without any mechanical backlash!

- If the sled moves stiff (too little backlash) you may get problems in vertical
positioning (refer 11.3 / 39), because the LF- motor (75 / R) may not have enough
power (bad print quality in vertical).

- If the sled has too much backlash the carriage unit (18) with the print head inside
may not position exactly in horizontal direction (bad print quality in horizontal).

Procedure to Reduce or Increase the Mechanical Backlash

85 86

For the following adjustment take care, that the sled (31 / A) is still inside the two
aluminium rails (34 / F).

DILETTA 700i Service Manual Page 35

85 Open (do not remove) the two screws (A and B).
With a second screw driver push the aluminium sheet underneath the screws a little (not hard!)
to the left or to the right.
Hold the aluminium part in position and fix both screws.
86 This picture shows the underneath sliding shoe (C) which you adjust by slightly pressing it
against one side of the rail where it is inside.

After the adjustment check the mechanical backlash again and take care, that the sled
does not move stiff!

12.7 Dirty Encoder Disks / Films

Dirty Encoder Disks or Films may also cause problems regarding the print quality.
Please refer chapter 11.12 (LF-, CR- and Purge- Encoder Disks / Film) for cleaning them.

12.8 Printable Area

In case the printable area is not observed it may happen, that ink drops are collected on
different areas of the sled or other printer parts. With the time this ink spots become higher
and higher, so that the print head may touch them. In this case the printer produces passports
in bad print quality or with ink spoils on it.
Please refer chapter 11.14 regarding this matter.

12.9 Printer Driver Adjustment

The printer driver should be adjusted to High in the menu item Print Quality.

12.10 Ink Quality

In order to ensure the best possible print quality and to retain the warranty claims do only use
original DILETTA inks.

12.11 Place Printer on a Solid Substructure

It is recommended to use the printer only on top of a solid table. Unsteady substructure may
affect the print quality.

steel rope so that it will not drop down.

107 Turn wheel (C) several times in the direction of the two arrows (do not turn in the other
direction). Do also not turn to much, because the steel rope may drop down.
If necessary increase again the tension with the help of screw (105 / L).

107 107

107 In order to attach the sled to the steel rope like visible in picture (96 / B) take care that the
windings are divided like in picture (107).
Three windings must be left of the steel rope and eight windings must be on its right
side.

14.3 Known problems

Problem 1

When you have installed a new main board (26) it may happen, that you get an error message (6000)
immediately after sending the first print job and the sled (31 / A) stops somewhere inside the printer
without printing the passport.

Solution

Swich the printer off and on again. After sending the next print job the printer will first perform a cleaning
procedure and then print the passport.
This mistake only happens during the first print after installing a new main board.
