Chisels

Chiseling is a process of removing thick layers of metal by using a cutting tool known as Chisel. Chisels are made from
High carbon Steel. It has hexagonal or octagonal cross sectional shape. They are forged to shape, roughly ground then
hardened and tempered. The length of the chisel is 150 mm to 400 mm. It is classified according to its length and width
of the cutting edge.

Types of Chisels:-The chisels used in fitting are as given below.

1) Flat Chisel 2) Cross Cut Chisel 3) Diamond Point Chisel 4) Half Round Nose Chisel

1) Flat Chisel :- This chisel is used for chiseling the material from flat surfaces, cutting wires, sheets and for general
purpose work. It is also used to part off metal after chain drilling. The cutting edge of the chisel is convex to avoid damage
to the corners while in use. The Taper head is provided at the end to get exact striking of the hammer in the center of
the chisel and to avoid formation of mushroom head. This Chisel is made from High carbon Steel. It has hexagonal or
octagonal cross sectional shape to have a grip while working. The length of the flat chisel varies from 100 mm to 400
mm and the width from 16 mm to 32 mm.

2) Cross Cut Chisel :- This chisel is used to cut narrow grooves, keyways and channels in shafts and pulleys. The
cutting edge is narrower in this chisel. This chisel is also known as Cape chisel. The Taper head is provided at the end
to get exact striking of the hammer in the center of the chisel and to avoid formation of mushroom head. This chisel is
made from High carbon Steel. It has hexagonal or octagonal cross - sectional shape to have a grip while working. The
length of the cross cut chisel varies from 100 mm to 400 mm and the width from 4 mm to 12 mm.

3) Diamond point Chisel :- This chisel has cutting edge just like a diamond. It is used for making sharp corners and for
cutting V shape grooves. The Taper head is provided at the end to get exact striking of the hammer in the center of the
chisel and to avoid formation of mushroom head. This Chisel is made from High carbon Steel. It has hexagonal or
octagonal cross sectional shape to have a grip while working.

4) Half round Nose Chisel :-This chisel is used for cutting oil grooves in the bearing and pulleys. It is also used for
bringing the drill hole in correct position when set out in accurately. The Taper head is provided at the end to get exact
striking of the hammer in the center of the chisel and to avoid formation of mushroom head. This Chisel is made from
High carbon Steel. It has hexagonal or octagonal cross sectional shape to have a grip while working.

5) Web chisel :- This chisel is used for separating the metal after chain drilling operation.

Safety Precautions :-
1) Use proper chisel for particular work.
2) Hold the chisel firmly in your left hand.
3) Chisel head and Hammer head must be free from Oil and grease.
4) Wear goggle while doing chiseling work.
5) Use safe guard in front of you while doing chiseling work.
6) Don’t use mushroom head chisels.
7) Use sharp pointed chisels.
8) Don’t keep chisels in your pocket.
9) It is necessary to concentrate on the chisel while doing chiseling work.
