Un d ers ta n d in g
1. Bond forming release energy and bond
breaking requires energy
2. Average bond enthalpy is the energy
needed to break 1 mol of a bond in a
gaseous molecule averaged over similar
compounds

1. Calculation of enthalpy changes from known bond enthalpy values and
comparison of these with experimentally measured values.
2. Sketching and evaluation of potential energy profiles in determining
whether reactants or products are more stable and if the reaction is
exothermic and endothermic
3. Discussion of the bond strength in ozone relative to oxygen in its
importance to the atmosphere
Bond Enthalpy/ Bond Dissociation Enthalpy (E)
Definition:
Average bond enthalpy à the average amount of energy required to break one
mole of covalent bonds in gaseous molecules under standard condition.

Breaking bonds à Requires energy (Endothermic Reaction)

Forming bonds à Releases energy (Exothermic Reaction)

In a chemical reaction:
• If E break bonds < E form bonds à release energy à exothermic.
• If E break bonds > E form bonds à absorb energy à endothermic.
Bond Enthalpy/ Bond Dissociation Enthalpy (E)
Bond energy is affected by other atoms in the molecule.
We use average bond enthalpy taken from a number of bonds of the
same type but different environments.
