Chapter 4
Chapter 4
The area product, Ap, of a three-phase core is defined differently than that for a single-phase core.
The window area, Wa, and iron area, Ac, for a three-phase transformer is shown in Figure.
For three-phase transformers, because there are basically two windows area, Wa, and three
iron areas Ac, the window utilization is different from single phase transformer, and the area
product, Ap, changes to:
𝑾𝒂
𝑨𝒑 = 𝟑 𝑨𝒄 = 𝟏. 𝟓 𝑾𝒂 𝑨𝒄 𝒄𝒎𝟒
𝟐
In the three-phase transformer, core geometry, Kg, is:
𝑾𝒂 𝑨𝟐𝒄 𝑲𝒖 𝑾𝒂 𝑨𝟐𝒄 𝑲𝒖
𝑲𝒈 = 𝟑 = 𝟏. 𝟓 𝒄𝒎𝟓
𝟐 𝑴𝑳𝑻 𝑴𝑳𝑻
𝟏
𝑷𝒕 = 𝑷𝒐 +𝟏
𝜼
If Delta-Delta, Full Wave rectifier, 𝑷𝒕 = 𝟐. 𝟏 × 𝑷𝒐
If Delta- Wye, Full Wave rectifier, 𝑷𝒕 = 𝟐. 𝟏 × 𝑷𝒐
If Delta- Wye, Half Wave rectifier, 𝑷𝒕 = 𝟐. 𝟔𝟗 × 𝑷𝒐
If Delta- Wye, 6 Phase Half Wave rectifier, 𝑷𝒕 = 𝟑. 𝟎𝟗 × 𝑷𝒐
Relationship, Kg, to Power Transformer Regulation Capability
𝑷𝒕
The regulation and power-handling ability of a core are related to two constants: 𝜶=
𝟐.𝑲𝒈 𝑲𝒆
The constant, Kg, is determined by the core geometry, which may be related by the following
equations:
𝑷𝒕
𝑲𝒈 =
𝟐. 𝑲𝒆 . 𝜶
The constant, Ke, is determined by the magnetic and electric operating conditions, which may be
related by the following equation:
𝑲𝒆 = 𝟐. 𝟖𝟔 𝒇𝟐 𝑩𝟐 𝟏𝟎−𝟒
From the above, it can be seen that factors such as flux density, frequency of operation, and waveform
coefficient, have an influence on the transformer size.
Relationship, Ap, to Transformer Power Handling Capability
According to the newly developed approach, the power handling capability of a core is related
to its area product, Ap, by an equation which may be stated as:
𝑷𝒕 . 𝟏𝟎𝟒
𝑨𝒑 = 𝟏. 𝟓 𝑾𝒂 𝑨𝒄 = 𝒄𝒎𝟒
𝑲𝒇 . 𝑲𝒖 . 𝑩𝒎 . 𝑱. 𝒇
From the above, it can be seen that factors such as flux density, frequency of operation, and
window utilization factor, Ku, define the maximum space, which may be occupied by the
copper in the window.
