Algebra 1 First-Quarter Review Assignment

Each of the problems below are similar to your Algebra 1 3.9.W Practice Exam.
You must show your work to receive credit!

1. Simplify the expression by combining like terms.

12𝑦𝑦 − 16𝑥𝑥2 + 5𝑦𝑦 + 4𝑥𝑥2

(12𝑦𝑦 + 5𝑦𝑦) + (−16𝑥𝑥² + 4𝑥𝑥²)

= 17𝑦𝑦 − 12𝑥𝑥².

2. Solve the equation.

5(𝑟𝑟 + 2) − 4𝑟𝑟 = 18 + 𝑟𝑟 − 8

5𝑟𝑟 + 10 − 4𝑟𝑟 = 18 + 𝑟𝑟 − 8

(5𝑟𝑟 − 4𝑟𝑟) + 10 = 18 + 𝑟𝑟 − 8 𝑟𝑟 + 10 = 18 + 𝑟𝑟 − 8

𝑟𝑟 + 10 − 𝑟𝑟 = 18 + 𝑟𝑟 − 8 − 𝑟𝑟

10 = 18 - 8

10 = 10

3. Solve for t.

R/t =d+10

𝑡 * (𝑟/𝑡) = 𝑡 * (𝑑 + 10)

𝑟 = 𝑡 * (𝑑 + 10)
𝑟 = 𝑑𝑡 + 10𝑡

𝑟 - 𝑑𝑡 = 10𝑡

𝑟 - 𝑑𝑡 = 𝑡(10)

4. On a sunny day, a 3-foot red kangaroo casts a shadow that is 5 feet long. The shadow of a nearby
eucalyptus tree is 7 feet long. Find the height of the tree.

Divide both sides of the equation by (10 - 𝑑) to solve for 𝑡: (𝑟 - 𝑑𝑡)/(10 - 𝑑) = 𝑡Height of kangaroo / Length of
kangaroo's shadow = Height of tree / Length of tree's shadow plug in the given values: 3 feet (height of
kangaroo) / 5 feet (length of kangaroo's shadow) = Height of tree / 7 feet (length of tree's shadow) Now, we can
cross multiply and solve for the height of the tree: (3 feet) * (7 feet) = (5 feet) * (Height of tree) 21 feet = 5
feet * (Height of tree) To isolate the height of the tree, divide both sides of the equation by 5 feet: 21 feet / 5
feet = Height of tree The height of the tree is approximately 4.2 feet. Therefore, the height of the eucalyptus
tree is approximately 4.2 feet.
Therefore, the solution for 𝑡 in the equation 𝑟/𝑡 = 𝑑 + 10 is 𝑡 = (𝑟 - 𝑑𝑡)/(10 - 𝑑), where (10 - 𝑑) is not equal to
zero.

5. Solve the inequality:

−3𝑚 − 15 ≥ −3𝑚 − 4 2.

−15 ≥ −4 3. The inequality −15 ≥ −4 is true because −15 is indeed less than or equal to −4. This
means that the inequality is true for all values of 𝑚. Therefore, the solution to the inequality is all real
numbers.
