Answer
The 9300-USBS is a USB to Serial Adapter.

This device provides a simple and easy way to connect Universal Serial Bus (USB) and a Serial port
interface. The 9300-USBS adapter's only function is to add a serial port to a computer that does not have
one. The adapter connects to serial cables that would typically connect a controller/device to a computer's
serial port for communication and programming. Please see the device's user manual for the proper cable
to be used.

Note: You cannot use a serial "gender changer" to connect directly from the 9300-USBS to the controller. A
cable inbewteen must be used for the adapter male RS232 connector to the device.

Drivers
There are different revisions and manufacturers for the Allen-Bradley 9300-USBS adapter. You can tell
which revision you have by looking at the label on the box it came in, sticker on the side of the RS232 plug,
mini driver CD, or how Windows recognizes the device (Prolific rev 1.0 or 2.0, anything else is from FTDI).

To find the latest drivers for the revision you are using see the table below.

Both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems are covered.

Note: There are no compatible Windows 8 or Windows 10 drivers for the 9300-USBS revision 1.0 or 2.0 of
the 9300-USBS models. You can use the 9300-USBS revision 3.0 and 3.1 with Windows 8, 8.1, and 10
operating system.

Note: If using the 3.0 or 3.1 revision adapter with Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Server
2008, choose driver version 2.08.24, which was the last version to be certified on these operating systems.

The latest (6-Jan-11) WHQL certified drivers from each manufacturer are attached at the bottom of this
Technote.

Installation
Follow the steps below to install the 9300-USBS adapter.

Note: The steps should be used as a guideline since installation on different operating systems can slightly
vary.

1. Verify that the USB port is enabled and working properly.


2. Insert the driver CD of the adapter into CD-ROM drive or make sure you have the drivers for the
adapter on the computer. See the Drivers section above for assistance if needed. When installing the
adapter it is possible to have Windows search for the driver if you have a working internet connection.
3. Plug the USB to Serial Adapter into the USB port.
4. The Found New Hardware Wizard will appear to assist you in setting up the new device:

5. Select the default option, Install the software automatically (Recommended).


6. Click Next to continue.
Windows will automatically detect the device and attempt to locate the driver you need.

Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port - Revs 1.0 or 2.0


USB Serial Port - Revs 3.0 and 3.1

7. When the software is located, Windows installs it:

8. When the software installation is complete, click Next.


9. The Wizard will finish like below or you will get a prompt saying your device has been installed and is
ready to use.

10. Click the Finish.


11. To make sure the driver has been installed, check the following:

a. Go to Control Panel >System >Hardware >Device Manager

b. Under the Ports (COM & LPT), there should be an entry for the Prolific USB-to-serial Comm
Port or USB Serial Port, indicating the driver was successfully installed and at what Comm Port
number it is assigned.

Driver Un-Installation
If you want to remove the USB to Serial adapter driver, you can uninstall it by following the steps below.
1. Unplug the USB to Serial adapter from your PC.
2. Run the Uninstall.exe from the software CD-ROM or driver donwload.

The USB-Serial Driver Remover dialog displays.

3. Click OK to remove the driver.


4. Reboot the computer.

Reinstalling Drivers
1. Go to the Device Manager.
2. Right click on the computer name at the top.
3. Select Scan for hardware changes.
4. Follow the installation steps as outlined in that section above.

Setting Up the USB to Serial Adapter to a Serial Modem


Follow the steps below to connect your RS-232 Serial Device (such as a: Modem) to a USB Port on your PC.

Note: The steps should be used as a guideline since installation on different operating systems can be
slightly different.

1. Turn off your Modem.


2. Plug the DB 9 connector of the USB to Serial adapter into your Modem.
3. Connect the other end of the USB to Serial adapter to an USB type A to type B cable.
4. Turn on the Modem.
5. Turn on your computer.
6. Plug the USB connector into the USB port of the USB to Serial adapter.
7. If you have previously installed a Modem device before, select the following:
Start >Settings >Modems

8. Open Modems Properties, then do the following:


a. Select the Modem.
b. Click Properties.
c. In the General tab, change the Port value to USB to Serial Port (COM#), where # is the port
number assigned in Device Manager.
9. After finishing these processes, you can use adapter to:
Connect RS-232 Serial 56K FAX Modem
Execute the Dial-up Function to connect Internet
Send the FAX with the FAX software (such as Microsoft FAX) properly.

Configuring RSLinx Classic to use the 9300-USBS Adapter


1. In the RSLinx Classic software, select Communications > Configure Driver
2. Under the Available Driver Types drop down select > RS-232 DF1 devices .
3. Give the driver a name or accept the default name of AB-DF1-1.
4. Select the Comm Port you assigned to the USBS and configure the rest of the selections accordingly
or select the Auto-Configure button after selecting the Comm Port.
